This thread is for suggesting new Prog Metal bands that might be suitable for inclusion in the archives.
Have a look at this page: http://www.mikeenregalia.com/ProgMetal.html - http://www.mikeenregalia.com/ProgMetal.html
The page has three sections: Current bands, Bands considered for addition and "Possible new additions".
Please post any band here which is not yet mentioned anywhere on the page:
- Name of the band
- Best suitable genre
- Link to the homepage and the record label (audio samples are more often available on the homepage of the label than on the homepage of the artist).
- Links to other useful resources
I will add the band to the list, and eventually we might pick the band for the voting process ( http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15322 - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15322 ).

Dragonforce, Muse, IQ, Ring of FIre, Star One, Spooks Beard, Turisas, Rhapsody, Bonzo Dog Band.
There hows that Mike?
And when did Nightwish become prog-power metal?

Are you sure what this is about?
- Half of those bands are already in the archives
- Half of them aren't prog metal
Please read the first post again.

ok, few changes required;
1st of all: DELETE KATATONIA, great band, the sample of the new album
is loveley (my twin)! but still hasn't got anything to do with prog, IF
you want that sort of band.. Klimt1918 would be more suitable for
adition.. they try some more things out..
2nd, here's a little list to add:
Manes
Ved buens ende
dodheimsgard
Toby driver (kayo dot soloproject)
Virus
Disillusion
Enslaved
Novembre
lots more..

Isis are clearly a metal band. Be careful though not to confuse them with the 70s prog rock band Isis.
I will not add JESU as long as I don't have any more info. PLEASE GIVE ME A LINK TO A WEBSITE.

, ok to be quite honest, im really not sure if they are at all progressive, but ive noticed that Angra is categorized as Progmetal, and my ear tells me,if it still serves me right, that some of their songs (SA's) has some similarities with Angra's....

Thank you for your kind words,I was not criticizing you for suggesting Sonata Arctica.I was disagreeing with the post saying they were speed metal.MM,we have a lot of bands here that are considered power metal bands, and I think some are a little more progressive than others. And there are some bands here that I consider pure power metal and was always a little puzzled as to why they were included here in the archives in the first place.

Stratovarius are a good example of a band which I would not consider to be progressive. But they are widely known to be progressive, they are known as a "progressive metal" band. When we consider bands for the inclusion in the archives, we have to weigh all sorts of factors:
- The music itself - and that includes the ENTIRE discography. It's common for people who are against the band to base their opinion on the least progressive tracks in their discography, and those who are convinced that they're prog will mention the most progressive tracks.
- Personal preference
- History
- How is the band considered on other major prog websites or in prog magazines
- How do the band members themselves describe their music?
- ...

Dan Swano, ya fools! It's like Rush playing prog death metal.
Amorphis - used to be doom, now is kinda like modern Katatonia with more prog influences.
Between the Buried and Me - could be called metalcore, but they are so much more than that. See the song Selkies: The Endless Obsession off their new album, Alaska.
Death - I think they're already pending, but hey.
Mastodon - Very good metalcore-ish band with some really great ideas. Bot htheir labums have some extremely prog moments.
That's all I got for now, I'm sure I'll think of more.
Oh! Nevermore! Their new album definitely is proggy, and they do enough to be on here.

I would suggest Cult of Luna. They sound similar to Isis, with more of a post-rock/experimental feel in their music. So they would also then sound like Pelican, only they use vocals, and generally play in slower tempos. They go back and forth between a heavy, often sludgy sound, and light, beautiful parts that you might find on, say, Explosions in the Sky material.
Their website is http://www.cultofluna.com - www.cultofluna.com . There are a few mp3s on there if you wish to have a listen.

You may also want to check out Nile. I'm not sure how progressive they really are, but some of their concepts and ideas are considerably progressive. They play ridiculously fast death-metal, with a few songs in lesser tempos. Talented musicians for sure. Some of the songs have symphonic arrangements, and their album follow some well-researched concepts based on ancient Egypt.
On a personal stand-point, I'm not a huge fan. The constant blast beats and death vocals get old and irritating to me pretty quick, but I do find their lyrical concepts quite interesting, as well as some of their music.
There's one mp3 off of their new album here: http://shop.relapse.com/content/downloads.aspx?MediaTypeID=2 - http://shop.relapse.com/content/downloads.aspx?MediaTypeID=2 . I didn't see any on the bands website.

I added Nile to the list. I agree that their particular brand of Death Metal is quite unique, but I think that it may not be enough to include them here.
You should check out Karl Sanders - Saurian Meditation:
http://shop.relapse.com/content/downloads.aspx?MediaTypeID=2 - http://shop.relapse.com/content/downloads.aspx?MediaTypeID=2
I'd call it "Ambient Post Death Metal" ...

Yea, it may not be enough, but I thought I'd throw their name out there. I checked out that Sanders song, it's pretty cool. If there is one thing I wish Nile did in their music, it would be adding some more thematic acoustic passages like that. Their music is just relentless most of the time.

They have no prog elements at all and they are primarily influenced by Helloween's "Keepers".
I don't even they consider themselves as prog. Someone can compare them with Gamma Ray or Sonata Arctica or Helloween, but not for example with Symphony X.
Anyway, here is my suggestion for a prog-related band that has to be added to progarchives:
Sorrowful Winds, from Greece. Web: http://www.sorrowfulwinds.gr - www.sorrowfulwinds.gr
They have started as a classic metal band but moved into more prog-related paths since 1999.
I would describe their music as atmospheric-power-prog metal with epic elements. Confused?

I love Dan Swano, and if you will check the archives his solo album Moontower is listed here,Edge of Sanity is here, and Nightingale is in the archives. Also, one of his projects Karaboudjan are one of the bands we are voting on right now.

I beg to differ. Obviously, you haven't listened to the following tracks: "Destiny" (10m16s), "Visions Southern Cross" (10m20s), "Infinity" (9m21s), "Fantasia" (9m56s), "Papillon" (7m01s), "Elements" (12m01s)...
Having said that, they would definitely fall under prog related as only one or two songs per album are progressively influenced...with the exception of the album Elements Part 1 which is very progressive in nature.

well the album silence is kinda progressive-ish but im no quite sure if
it could be in this site. we have bands that aren't really
progressive like kamelot (witch i like )
in this site, so, do we really need bands like Iron Maiden or Sonata
Arctica to be in this site just because they are more "progressive"
than kamelot or nightwish or becuase they have some prog-ish sounds
here and there? some people put these things like excuses to add bands.
Maybe there are bands that should be in this site, but please, be very careful and picky about adding bands to the site.

- I do not make this decision on my own.
- The policy is that I will add any band to the list of SUGGESTIONS which is associated with prog and metal in the widest possible sense.
- If the band is rejected, it will REMAIN in the list and marked "sorry, will not be added because ..." .
- This will prevent further requests to add the band (hopefully).

The only prog label i can think of for Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica is "regressive prog metal".
You might consider Necrophagist though (progressive technical death metal or whatever). I don't know if they're properly progressive as they dont venture too far beyond their stylistic boundaries , but they're quite impressive at what they do (esp. on their latest, sophomore album Epitaph). Maybe another album will tell.

I see that Cynic, Watchtower, Dillinger Escape Plan are all already in the archive. Along similar lines (although more modern and intense), perhaps you should include bands such as PsyOpus, Gorod and Deadsea, all of whom play not only highly technical death/grind-related music, but also music that is highly "prog" i.e. crazy time signatures, song structures, etc. Some might be turned off by the growly vocals but if we're going to consider Nile, these bands are (to my ears) more "prog." If you want blazingly mind-blowing technicality in your "extreme metal," I don't think any band tops Cryptopsy.
On a slightly different vibe, perhaps you should consider Don Caballero. Fascinating band that has gone through several iterations. They started as a complex, instrumental hard-core band and evolved into a "post-rock prog band" defined by very tricky, intertwining guitar lines (think early 80s Crimson) and fantastic drumming somewhere in between prog, hard rock and free jazz.
There are plenty more, but maybe start with these for consideration.

I don't know what progressive power metal is but after hearing that title it
made me think of "Avenged Sevenfold." I'm actually not sure if they're are
Progressive power metal but they very well could be (on their new album.)
Their new album is a concept album that's very interesting I like it a lot. The
two song clips they have on their site are not that good of examples are
their progressiveness. I would recommend "the Wicked End" or "Sidewinder",
two of my favorite tracks from the album.
Now I don't want anyone to think I'm just trying to include one of my favorite
bands. There just a really good band for their genre IMO.

Much as I like tech death and much as I haven't heard those three bands, I think we have to be careful here as there are a lot of bands that fit under that stylistic boundary but remain without (so far as I can see) any prog elements - Cryptopsy, Origin, Wormed, Necrophagist... Gorguts are a bit closer I think, but I haven't listened to them all that much. I'll give a listen to these chaps you mention and see if I like, anyway
