Some of you may know my Prog Metal page:
http://www.mikeenregalia.com/ProgMetal.html - http://www.mikeenregalia.com/ProgMetal.html
A lot of bands have been mentioned by various members, and in order to figure out which of them should be added to the archives, I've formed a group of Prog Metal experts:
- Useful_Idiot
- TheProgtologist
- MikeEnRegalia
- king16
- Vanwarp
We will do the following:
- I'll present a list of band, which the team will listen to.
- The members of the team vote for the bands that they would like to include
- bands which receive three votes will be added:
- prior to adding the bands, I'll anounce the new additions in this thread (always in the first post)
- any serious complaints (like "wooot they are not prog!!!") should be posted here, in which case I will ask the other admins and Max about their opinion
- Then I'll add the bands, unless I hear a veto from them.
And now, without further ado, here's the first bunch of bands:
- Avantasia
Orchestral Power Prog
- Behold ... the Arctopus

Interesting list Mike, and good idea, mabey something similar should be done for all of the other genres as prog metal isnt the only one.

Agreed ... we'll see how this thing turns out, maybe others will want to do something similar for Symphonic Prog/Neo Prog or Experimental/Post/RIO/Avant.

Personally I'd love to get involved though I'm not in a position to find new bands to be added to the archives.
BTW I'm supprised its tacken this long to get Micheal Romeos solo CD on here.

Three votes and they are in -- that seems somewhat easy. I think it should be closer to a consensus, at least 4 votes. Or one of you could have veto power. If one feels very, very strongly about a group not being prog, then they don't get in with 3 votes, only 4.
I don't know, guys. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work, though.
PS - I hope you don't vote for Mastodon. I'm pretty liberal in what I consisder prog, but them ain't it, I know that much.

As I said in the first post: If an artist is accepted (3 votes) and there is really strong opposition, we will investigate further. But this opposition has to be backed up with good reasons ...

Keep in mind that other extreme bands like Dillinger Escape Plan are also included. Surely that alone is not sufficient for adding a band, but it means something.

I will ... and I have. Feel free to comment on the bands that I listed in the initial post. I will keep that list up to date, and I will show the results of the votes on my ProgMetal page. So it would be best if you all bookmark the page:

Just to avoid misunderstandings: You can vote and I'll add the votes to the page, but the decision whether or not to add the artists will be based on the team members' votes. But I really think that it would be interesting to see how the opinions of the team members relate to the public opinion.

Enslaved definitely deserves to be considered for inclusion in the "Progressive black" subgenre and thus into the archives, based on their last 3 albums (Monumension, Below The Lights and ISA). ISA is one of the most innovative black metal albums I have heard in a long time, a fresh breath into a genre that has become somewhat stale as of late.
Their older stuff is more brutal and more pure metal, but still with some prog qualities (A 16 minute epic named 793(The Battle of Lindisfarne) is one example).
In addition to that, it would be really cool to have a band from my hometown, Bergen, included in the archives
As per TP's instructions, commenting about bands on the list. Only heard Mastodon's "Leviathan" album, and based on that album alone I'm hesitant to call it progressive.. but it's up to you guys eventually.
Vintersorg's two first albums, "Till Fjälls" and "Ödemarkens Son" are more Folk Metal than prog imo. "The Focusing Blur" on the other hand, I'd say fits the prog metal label quite nicely. I'm for including Vintersorg.

I added them to the chart - maybe we'll discuss their addition. Feel free to mention any other band which you feel is missing. Of course it would be best if you also post a link to a page with audio samples ...

Why don't you all stop with naming other bands that ought to be included? We did all that in the Re-Organizing Prog Metal thread. Why don't you just stick to the 15 bands we are talking about and considering.

Sonata Arctica is a very interesting band, some of their music's characteristics include top musicanship, long songs, tempo changes, songs with "parts", which are all prog clichés. But even though they are not that "prog", they sure can qualify as something like a Prog/Power Metal band and I would add them if I had the chance or at least take them in account. Opinions?

yes I also think Sonata Arctica are kind of progressive
and for the other bands, I think every band should be added to the archives, except Blind Guardian and Avantasia.

Sorry Jody, I encouraged them to do so ...
But you're right, this is getting too confusing ... so I created another thread:
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15343 - Prog Metal: Possible new additions
there you can post any band which isn't mentioned yet.
And I renamed this thread to:
Prog Metal: Addition Voting
so please, limit your posts in THIS thread to the bands which are currently scheduled for voting.
