To make up for having forgotten to mention Neil Peart in my poll for best classic prog drummer, I launch two polls, one to vote for the best Rush album released in the 70's, the second to vote for the best Rush album released in the 80's. Good polls !

This is a tough one. 2112 is classic to the nth degree. Hemisphere's contains some extra ordinary technical achievements, La Villa Strangiato is Rush's instrumental orgasm.

Hey Lucas, did you notice that you left Fly By Night off the list?

For me, however, I'm going to rate A Farewell to Kings as the best. Closer to the Heart is the Quintessential RUSH tune. Also, Cygnus X-1 is an adventure. I also like the balance between Sunlight and Shadow on this one.  Real ear candy...... yum yum

Sorry for the omission of 'fly by night' in the list.

Hey, don't worry about it.

Hmm, I can't decide; they all make very good candidates. Might as well just sit back and listen to them all back to back before I make up my mind

Glad too see some folks picking "Farewell"; a great album that is often underplayed IMHO.

( For Lucas ) I'm sorry but that must have been some kind of mistake I have no idea how that got up there. Anyway, I voted on your poll and chose Hemispheres.La Villa Strangiato is a phenomenal piece of music. I can't even remember how many times I've seen Rush live. The best show was at the Montreal Forum in 1978 ( Farewell To Kings Tour ).

Yes, Hemispheres is a great album, but IMHO it would sound more delightful if Geddy had sung at that time with the voice he had on the further Rush albums (I mean records such as 'Power windows' or 'Signals').

Ah, finally a poll I can sink my teeth into.

AFTK for me, followed closely by Hemispheres. I find these the best back-to-back album release of all time.

  1. A Farewell to Kings (despite Cinderella Man)
  2. Hemispheres
  3. Carress of Steel

The others I'm not too fond of.

Always a hard choice but for me Hemispheres will always be Rush at their very best.

1.  A Farewell to Kings - By this time in their career, Rush had honed their songwriting and they were able to create their first full-blown prog album.  The title tracks shows the band's songwriting has matured by leaps and bounds, and Xanadu + Cygnus X-1 are the obligatory epics.  There isn't a single wrong note played on this one...

2.  Hemispheres - How do you follow-up an album like Farewell to Kings?  Easy, you go for excess!  Perhaps the most ambitious album they ever did...  Everyone likes to heap praises on the first and last tracks, and sure they're brilliant, but check out the middle tracks.  The Trees has become a concert staple, and for good reason, but the real gem of the album is Consequences...  the chorus riff is just about the catchiest thing the band has ever written.  Genius.

3.  2112 - A lot of critics tend to call the second side of the album filler, but I couldn't disagree more!  Check out the eerie whispered vocals on Twilight Zone, and Something for Nothing is one of their strongest closing songs ever.  Their first masterpiece.

4.  Fly By Night - Who would have guessed after the debut that they would have come up with this?  One foot still firmly planted in classic rock, but that seems to enhance the album's prog moments.  And let's not forgot the mindblowing By-Tor and the Snow Dog.  Incredible.

5.  Caress of steel - A very good album, but it has its flaws.  For one thing, I Think I'm Going Bald is a total filler track... fun to listen to perhaps, but completely beneath the band.  Secondly, the epics are perhaps a bit TOO ambitious for this particular moment of time..  They both contain moments of pure genius, but there also rather unorganized and lack focus... it wouldn't be until their next album where they perfected their songwriting to tackle something of this magnitude.  Bastille Day is a classic.

6.  Rush - Led Zeppelin worship here folks, not that there's anything wrong with it.  Most of the album could easily stand head to head with the best of Jimmy Page and folks.  The real highlight is Working Man, which pretty much towers over everything else here and hints at the direction of the band.  Underrated, perhaps, but by no means essential to anyone other than big fans of the band.

I chose AFTK because it is the best of the 2112/AFTK/Hemispheres post-apocalyptic trilogy. All the other 70s Rush albums are only mediocre.

This post-apocalyptic trilogy? Intentional? Or just reocurring themes? I am I dumb or am I dumb?

2112 because it was a dramatic departure from their previous work and set the stage for all the great stuff they would release from there on.

1) Hemispheres
2) A Farewell to Kings
3)= 2112
   = Fly By Night
5) Caress of Steel
6) Rush

I really can't decide between Fly By Night and 2112. '2112' is an absoluetly astounding song, but the rest of the tracks, bar 'A Passage to Bangkok', aren't anything too special. Fly By Night does have a couple of weak tracks (Beneath, Between, Behind and Best I Can) but Anthem is an excellent opener and By-Tor and the Snow Dog is one of my all time favourite Rush songs. It also finishes on a high note with  'In The End'.

Hemispheres gets my vote

I liked everything they done in the 70's, the debut obviously being my least favourite. Hemispheres has superb production, has La Villa Strangiato, and is altogether a more polished and complete album than AFTK - Which is also excellent

Hemispheres.

Not an easy decision, but it's all about Side A of that bad boy! And "La Villa." Pretty much clinches it.

I CHOOSE 2112. THE FIRST BSONG IS THE BEST EPIC EVER COMBINING HEAVY RIFS, EMOTIONAL THEMES AND CLEVER - TECHNICAL STRUCTURES.

THE OTHER SONGS SHOW HOW PROG CAN BE WRITEN IN LESS 4 MINUTES TRACKS.EVERYTHING HERE IS A SMALL DIAMOND.

I think A FAREWELL TO KINGS is their best from the 70's, but, IMO, I also think there was better to come.  BTW...what happened to FLY BY NIGHT?
