All of us love prog rock. Try to tell me how are you listening to music ? I prefer headphones, because i can hear all details which i cant hear in hifi. Headphones - Koss porta pro - really super headphones with great bass. I have bought 1gb mp3 player i-river. There is 3D effect, so it is really wonderful sound. I can listen aprox. 20 albums in the mp3 format during travelling or sleeping. And of course, my computer is the base of mine :). Do you think that mp3 (in higher bitrate 192, 256, 328) format is ok ? I think that there is not big difference between higher bitrate mp3 and wave.

Anyway try to tell me how do you listen to prog ? (hifi or computer, headhpones or speakers, etc. you know...

I use headphones when I listen to CD's on my CD-player.

It depends when im on my computer; sometimes headphones, but mostly speakers.

I prefer headphones, because the music is so much more intimate and its alot easier to hear particular details. But theres nothing wrong with blaring it full volume on a stereo!

I usually take my music EVERYWHERE with me, whether it be my ipod or cd player...

On the big floor speakers when at home, and headphones outside.

I also like to listen to music while wandering on the mountain trails

exactly..... my wife gives me hell, that I can't even do the dishes without putting 'that music' on.  Pretty much listen to it any chance I have.  With so much variety, listen to 2 or 3 albums a day, could go months without repeating.  Love prog, never going back to meer rock and roll.

I don't think I go anywhere without my mp3 player. I do prefer listening at home though, where I can actually concentrate on the music.

That brings up another question. Are there any songs that always demand your full attention, - no reading - no working - just listening ! ?. For me, amongst many are CTTE, Supper's Ready and TAAB. I would hate to think what might happen if I listened to those whilst driving

Zarathrustra for me,  I get so caught up in the 'air' keyboards that I would suffer severe personal injury if I tried listening to that at work or in the car.

I believe the best way to enjoy prog music, or any other kind of rock music, is listening through loudspeakers, although some of you may say that the sound can be perceived better by using headphones, and all that.

I own a Panasonic CD Stereo System which I have installed in my room. This includes two front loudspeakers, one center speaker, and two rear speakers. The sound is so powerful, and it really gives you that feeling when playing to any kind of music, specially prog rock, which is the most I listen to.

Now, for experiencing the best video-audio quality, I use my home theater audio system which is also installed in my room. This includes two front speakers, one center speaker, two rear speakers, and one subwoofer.

I like to play my CDs, or DVDs, mostly at night, around 8 o'clock. That way I can relax better in my room and listen to music without being disturbed by other people...

When at home, I hook up headphones to my turntable, the absolute best way to hear everything in music. When out and about, mostly on CD/MP3 players with headphones or through the car stereo.

My favorite method -

At home, my armchair, cat on the lap, through the hi-fi (Gale 5i speakers & Eltax sub-woofer for those essential 'bass pedal moments'), cigarette on the go, preferably a bottle of Theakston's Old Peculiar on the side.... Heaven!

I listen to music constantly throughout my day. When I wake up I usually listen on our stereo while getting ready for work and eating breakfast,I take about 20 cds to work everyday and listen all day on my portable cd player,in the car in my car stereo, and at home I listen to most of my music on the computer, and also on our stereo.Sometimes at home I listen through headphones,it all depends on my mood.

I currently don't have an mp3 player but my snitch of a daughter told me that my wife got me one for Christmas

Definitely on the stereo!! Full concentration, no reading (well, maybe the lyrics or *about* the particular band*), but otherwise, strictly focusing on the detail. Pity it's becoming rare to purchase louspeakers, without having to buy the whole shabang or 'home theater' crap. At least in some countries, I find it difficult to upgrade my KEFs.
But sure, prog through loudspeakers is my way of pleasure!!
I particularly liked the earlier reply about listening to prog at certain places to reminisce about certain events in your life. That's what happens to me when I listen to "Selling England By The Pound", my first ever prog album that I purchased (at DMV, Manhattan )Brings back a mix of nostalgia, sadness but elation at the same time.

I have an MP3 player and speakers all over the place. I have speakers with a sub-woofer in the basement, speakers in the car and speakers at work. I also have some little foldable speakers for use in the places where I don't have other speakers.

Does your wife get fed up with too much prog metal at home?
