I've noticed that Camel's effort from 1975 has been quickly working its
way up the top 100 as of late. I've always thought this was the weakest
of their four albums with the classic lineup in place (not that it's
bad, just in comparison to the other three). So, the poll comes up. Is
this your favourite album of Camel's? Mine's Mirage, so... it's a no
for me.

Indeed their best. Very consistent throughout - something you can't say about any of their other albums.

Not just my favourite Camel album, but my favourite album of the 800 I own. I would argue it should be no 1, but am realistic enough to accept that most will not agree.
Some reviewers have accused it of being "safe" or "unadventurous" which shows they don't have a clue what it's about.
It was designed to tell a story, one which is gentle, sad and poignant. A Close to the Edge style suite would have been ridiculous in the context. What they wrote was a perfect interpretation of Gallico's book. If you want a more adventurous approach, try Moonmadness or Mirage, also top drawer.

It has a damn sight more right to be there than any Rush album. I like Rush (and have done since the early 70s) but they are borderline for prog in my view (they were always hard rock/ metal amongst the student community in the 70s) and none of their studio albums come near the Snow Goose. They are best live.

Has it occurred to you that they just might like it?
I've lent my copy to a couple of my Sixthformers. They lent it on and it's been going round so I now have no idea where it is. But they all love it, apparently. So let's not knock an album that clearly has the power to turn young people on to prog.

I agree, no conspiracy here, it is a popular album and very good too, and Goose wouldn't give a 5 star review unless he meant it!
Disagree with your Rush commenrs though and I think Rush have have quite a few albums better than Snow Goose, A Farewell To Kings for a start, and thats definitely prog, its all a question of taste though!

Agreed, a question of taste. I would rate Farewell to Kings as 4*. I prefer their earlier, harder material like 2112 and Fly By Night. But I like metal, you see!

Why would such a beautifully crafted, wonderfully played and emotive album make 'a joke out of this site'?? I think Camel give the genre a very good name, and are far more accessible than most prog acts, yet there's just as much depth in their music as VDGG's imo, for example, and imo far MORE emotional depth than there is in Dream Theater's work....

I'd have to say it was Camel's finest and best album- the music contained within it is just gorgeous and full of emotional content. I'd overlooked it for a while (I'd been ploughing through their later albums), but when I played it I fell in love with the album again and it would definitely be my fave album of theirs.

Camel's music has always struck me as very comfortable
and riding in the wake of the innovations the important
progressive bands made. I hate to interrupt this love-fest, but
isn't progressive rock supposed to have some guts and edge to
it? I haven't heard the album in many years, but remember it
being very pleasant and unchallenging, which could possibly
pass for good elevator music as well.
