The other thread about the same topic was somewhat...lacking.  So, I decided to make one myself.

I voted for Sheehan, by the way.

Percy Jones or Hugh Hopper, if they were listed.  Since they're not, I guess I'll go with Levin.

Not saying the best, but have you ever listened Randy "The Emperor" Jackson (Yes the same judge from American Idol ) playing with Jean Luc Ponty, he's amazing

This guy also played with Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin or even Journey, The Emperor is simply outstanding in Fusion Bass, perfect in everything, I wonder why he changed so much and ended being  a session musician for N'Sync and Madonna.

Billy Sheehan (born 1953) is generally acknowledged as the greatest rock bass player of all time.

Hard to argue with that! Too bad I'm not familiar with his work yet. In the mean time, Squire for me.

Yes, Ivan, I forgot about Randy Jackson.  He truly is an excellent bass player, and look where he's at now

If you like Squire, then obviously you have good taste and you'll like Sheehan.

Check out the Niacin listing in the Archives, or http://www.billysheehan.com to check out some of his stuff.

Niacin is awesome.Dennis Chambers is an incredible drummer

I pick Tony Levin out of the bassists on the list.

You left out Victor Wooten and Bunny Brunel,2 excellent jazz/fusion bassists.

Hey Tim, who knew you'd vote for Sheehan?

Haven't heard enough of some of these guys to really vote.....but, you know me, I'd probably vote for Geddy Lee anyway.

My favorite prog bass man is Lee. He has some awsome basslines which are in the same time complex and catchy. In fusion now I can't decide.

My favorite of the list would be Chris Squire though I think I might consider the best to be Geddy Lee as his lines are pretty complex, always catchy, does it all while singing, and the fact that he gets that sweet, sweet tone while playing with fingers really appeals to me for some reason. Learning the entirety of 'Moving Pictures' when I first starting playing bass really motivated me to push myself, as I promised to reward myself with an upgrade to a Fender Jazz bass from the Ibanez GSR200 I was playing at the time.

Thanks Geddy!

Though it should be said that when considering Fusion players, I think Percy Jones takes the cake. He has been influencing me a lot with the recent assembly of my new fretless Jazz bass. Brand X is such a great band, why hadn't I discovered them sooner?

Ditto, there's almost no fusion players except Stanley Clarke on the list.
Where's Alphonso Johnson, Miroslav Vitous, Jeff Berlin? Percy Jones (Brand
X) doo-doos on just about anyone on the list.

Good point, what does Squire or Geddy Lee do in a fusion list?

But Wetton or Rutherford??????

All amazing players but not related with Jazz/Fusion at all. Unless you don't see as Prog/Fusion like an independant Prog genre.

Iván

I meant progressive rock and jazz fusion...I was not aware that prog/fusion in itself was a specific genre.

I would have to say Geddy Lee, though I haven't heard a lot of the bassists in
this poll, I don't really know how accurate my vote is.

No, but it's an specific sub-genre of  Prog ( http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_LIST.asp?style=30 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_LIS T.asp?style=30  ), so a better question would have been who's your favorite Prog bassist because this involves Prog/Fusion also.

Just being specific.

Iván

But still I believe Randy "The Emperor" Jackson should be on the list.
