I'm thinking this will be obvious, but maybe I'll be surprised. I'll be more interested in what ends up being the second best.

I think the time between 1890-1914 is miles above any other period, but obviously I'm not allowed to vote for that.

Come on you boys 'n' girls. The '70's will win hands down! And I fully agree with that.

Having lived as teenager and young adult the 60s (2nd half) and the 70s, I like both but I'll vote for the Sixties where everything was prepared to explode into the Seventies.

I think the 70s are highly overrated. Just because prog was booming then doesn't mean that was a good decade for music. Overall, I can't choose, because I like little pieces of music from each decade, and I don't reguard the 70s very highly, although I do admit Yes, Genesis King Crimson and Jethro Tull all were very prolific and worthwhile in that decade.

Yeh, prog was best in the 70's, obviously, but EVERYTHING was great around the late 60's. That "proto-prog" and "early prog" (Procol Harum, ItCOtCK) sound is so cool, psychedelia was expanding rock's borders, and besides, I consider 1970 a year in the Sixties music-wise. (A very good year.)

Shame it counts as the '70's then isnt it

Uh, no, the point I was trying to make is that I count it as Sixties. If we're talking music-wise, then I'm speaking in terms of "Musical decades". I find that '71 is the year the Seventies found its identity.

Yes, you might be right.

Sibelius, Dvorak, Debussy... great stuff.

But I picked 70s from that list.

Yeah, this seems like a no-brainer for about 95% of folks here.

Although some prog metal heads may have another opinion...

...it would just be wrong.

Lol well this is pretty humerous....

When this poll was done over at Dt.net, it was atleast semi balanced result wise. There wqas some 60's, a little 80's  a few 90's , but this is just ridiculus

lol

I'm getting sick and tired of prog metal fans getting slammed in this forum.

Is this question posed in terms of when was the best music created, or when is the best decade for experiencing music?

My vote obviously goes for the 70's, but if the question were posed towards the latter I would say that now is the best time for experiencing all the great music of the past (and certain rare occasions of musical greatness in the present).  Here's my reasons:

~While in the 70's you have the experience of seeing your favorite prog giants live in concert, today you can still see many of them in concert, and you also have the benefit of the music gaining a legendary reputation through the years as it maintains a loyal and organized fan-base.

~Today's technology allows you to experience a larger magnitude of music.  I have roughly the same quality of lifestyle as my father did when he was my age, and he still comments that he would have been jealous of me if he had seen my music collection at his age

~Today's technology also allows us to research music much quicker and more efficiently, thanks to great web-based resources like progarchives.  So we waste less time and money on music that might not mirror our interests.

~Even though nothing sounds as good as a mint condition vinyl, mp3 and compact disc technology give you the ability to listen to music anywhere while doing just about anything.

So I would say now is "the best decade for music", but of course in terms of the best music from a decade I'd certainly go with 70's.

Now, now, c'mon it was in good fun.

I actually love Opeth, Tool (possibly my favorite band), Cynic, Spiral Architect, Dead Soul Tribe, OSI, and even yes, DT.

I was just funnin' at apparently your expense.
