Just had a thought and bare with me on this one boys and girls.

I was lying in the bath last night playing with my rubber duck , mulling over how to get more people into progressive music (this might not be such a burning issue in countries other than the UK but I could be wrong) and I thought of how successful book and film clubs have been in gathering together like minded individuals to enjoy and discuss their chosen interests and I mused, why don’t people do the same for progressive rock?

Surely, a group of guys and girls could get together every now and again and go see some gigs in their local area. This way the bands get more of a crowd and people get to see a higher frequency of live prog.

I understand that the ‘can’t be arsed’ factor is a real problem during a weeknight or the winter months. Some of us have kids or no money (or maybe both) but thinking it though, I believe it doesn’t have to be that much effort, hell it doesn’t even need to be going out and seeing gigs.

For example, people could just meet up for a drink at somebody’s house, play some well loved records and then discuss/argue into the small hours about the merits of the music and the bands that made them. Much like this forum, you might get a chance to hear music you would normally never buy or even know about. If you don’t like what you hear, at least you came into contact with something new and that can’t be a bad thing.

As mentioned, maybe this notion of a progressive club might not hold true for all parts of the world but for example, I live in London and although I keep my ear to the ground for prog gigs, I rarely pick up on all of them (the paucity of real prog shows, apart from the odd festival at the London Astoria/Mean Fiddler in the Capital is a major stumbling block, couple that with the more than occasional lack of good media coverage and you can easily miss a clutch of great prog events). If there was a loose club of individuals who met up from time to time, they could exchange info on what gigs were coming up and therefore keep more venues populated by those who care

There, I’ve said it.

In other (but nonetheless related) news, I’m also thinking of putting on a progressive themed open mic/acoustic night at a venue in London at some point in the future if I can find enough acts willing to roll up. The idea is for prog bands, who might struggle to pull a crowd all on their own but would still like to gig in London on an occasional basis, to come down with an acoustic setup and play a short set of around five or six numbers and maybe get in a headline act who could play a longer set.

Initially, I suppose we might hold a night of this nature once every eight weeks and see if there is enough interest to push it further. In total, we’d hope to get about three or four acts on in a night starting and finishing early enough for people to get transport home. It’s just a thought as of now but I have a small PA (good enough for vocals, keyboards and acoustic guitars), some lights and a few ideas on venues that might be interested in holding such a night.

What was it Robert Fripp said about small, mobile, intelligent units?

I doubt the night would be up and running until next year but it doesn’t do any harm to test the waters does it?

I have some of these nights with Dutch friends of mine. For years already. We're with 5 people, and we regularly meet to listen to each other's cd's. Everybody has a playlist of about 5 - 7 songs, and for each meeting we prepare some lists, like the ones on PA (best instrumentalist, best lyricist etc.), only we did this before PA existed.

We also go to concerts together.

So that's a good idea you have, Sigod!

There is..

http://progmeetup.com/

...and they do offer listings for the UK.

I signed on about a year and a half ago to be the "director" for my area (Grand Rapids Michigan), had one meeting where only one other person showed up, and we were differently minded in the prog spectrum (I am more neo prog/art rock/symphonic, he was devoutly canterbury/RIO), and we didnt really hit it off. So I have resigned myself to being content with this board, a couple of the online stations, and my 3 year old son who loves Neal Morse and Rush.

A fine idea, Sigod - I'm only about 20 miles north of London myself; I've often wondered why some of us PA chaps who live in the same vicinity never get together to extoll the virtues of prog, get a tad tiddly, set the music world to rights & sl*g off other members of the Archive in complete privacy...

Jim
Glad to hear you like the idea , getting it together is another matter but I guess all it takes is for someone to see a gig they think others might like and to let people know (for example, see the posts between Blacksword and I in the reviews section under the Genesis tribute review).

Syzygy/The Doctor
It was tired and if truth be told, I am (and always will be) a minor league player when it comes to the English language.

Still, I guess if anyone REALLY wants to see naked pictures of slightly overweight men in their mid forties with bloodshot eyes, pale skin and a slightly bemused expression on their face, I’m sure they’re must be hundreds of sites out there that can cater for such tastes...

BTW, I have NO idea why this came out in bold print (and I can't seem to turn it off either).

Sigod,

rubbish jokes at the expense of your typos aside, I think it's a great idea - I'm based in London myself, so work permitting I'd be up for meeting somewhere every couple of months and for gigs etc.

And if you absolutely insist I'll keep my clothes on.

Cool Syzygy,

I can let you know that I’m due to see a band called The Progs (a prog covers band who play, Rush, Yes, Genesis, Camel, etc) at the Half Moon in Putney on Sunday the 27th which Blacksword is thinking of attending. You are most welcome to join us (and indeed so would Jim) if you like and yes, I insist you keep your clothes on unless (cough) er…have you any of those high cut bikinis?

Hi Sigod - sounds a really good idea, I'd appreciate the chance to meet some like minded people, hear some music, and especially, any chance to drink beer, though, I'd pass on the nudity thing....seriously, like Jim I live North of London - I'm near St Albans, so  getting into London is easy for me.

Most of my knowledge of prog is restricted to those well known symphonic bands that dominate the top 20 on this site so the chance to explore some other music appeals.

On the gig front by the way I am going to see the Syn (with Chris Squire) at the Marquee next Tuesday, 15th November - bought the album they have released which on first playing sounds good but not great, there are a couple of strong songs in there. Anyhow I will enjoy seeing Squire play in a small(er) venue. I reckon they'll be good on stage.

^^would have invited myself along on 27th but I can't make that night........

Putney is actually very handy for me, so if I'm free that weekend I'll definitely head along to the Half Moon. I've seen a few things there - I remember seeing Barbara Thompson's Paraphenalia there some years ago and having a brief but pleasant chat with John Hiseman afterwards.

The more the merrier Chopper, I suppose I might have to wear a red rose or carry a copy of The Times like they used to do in 60's spy movies so we can identify each-other

Maybe we could have a secret pass phrase like:

"Are you a Collins or a Gabriel fan?" to which the reply must be:
"Neither, Ray Wilson is my guy!" Then one of us punches the other in the face!

Does that sound okay?

I'm not around this Saturday but do tell us how it goes. Maybe threefates will be there (she's often in the UK for ELP and ELP related gigs).

This is great NutterAlert (or may I call you Nutter for short? ). I guess the best night for those traveling a longer distance is a Saturday but at the moment, I don't know of any Saturday prog gigs on in the near future. Over and above a gig, we could all just as easily meet up on a pub at some point.

Just so you all know, the details of the gig on the 27th is on this thread:

That's interesting news about the progmeetup.com site and I shall investagate further. Thanks for that. I guess there will always be people who love different aspects of a common love, it's just a shame you guys didn't get on. At least you and your son love the same things (for now ).

We'll all have to post our pictures in the Rogues Gallery thread so we can recognise each other.

I'll post a review of the Greg Lake gig next week, it should be interesting. I've seen on his web site that his band has a guitarist and a bass player, so I'm not sure what Greg is doing (apart from presumably singing).

I look forward to reading ther review of the Greg Lake gig. Maybe he'll tapdance while singing (I'd pay good money to see that!)

I'm a bit late in coming into this thread, but I'd like to add my support to your idea. It's a cracker! There must be a number of us clustered around London who could meet up with some regularity.

I shall make every effort to attend the Progs gig in Putney, it should be fun. Also -  I'll have to double check this -  but I think IQ are playing at the Mean Fiddler on the 10 of December, which IS a Saturday, if you or any fellow progger is interested.

A quick reminder to those who wish to participate;

I still intend to visit the Half Moon in Putney (that's South London to you guv) this Sunday (the 27th), to see The Progs play and in the spirit of all that has been said in this thread, I intend to treat this possible meeting of great minds with the utmost seriousness and solemnity...

...as a result, I shall be in the bar of The Half Moon from 7.00pm onwards and in order for any fellow prog archive member who might wander down to identify me, I shall be the gentleman wearing a sombrero (no really).

The things I do for Prog.

The Progs
Sunday, November 27 at 8:00 PM

The Progs are a tribute to the golden age of progressive rock, playing faithful renderings of the very best songs from the greatest bands of the era - Yes, Genesis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Camel and others including the occasional rarity. Where else could you see 'Firth of Fifth', 'Starship Trooper', 'Karn Evil 9' and 'Comfortably Numb' in one evening! The Progs are: Shaun Hunt - Bass, Guitars, Bass pedals, vocals Doug Melbourne - Keyboards, vocals Mark Foster - Lead vocals, guitar, percussion Neil Marshall – Drums, percussion Mark Nixon - Lead guitar

£4.00

Er...ahem, that's not me. It's just an example of what a sombrero looks like.

As for future get togethers, Blacksword and I look forward to seeing any other Prog Archive members at the up and coming IQ gig at the Mean Fiddler (Charing Cross Road) in London on Sat 10th December.
