Just had a thought and bare with me on this one boys and girls. I was lying in the bath last night playing with my rubber
duck Surely, a group of guys and girls could get together every
now and again and go see some gigs in their local area. This way the bands get
more of a crowd and people get to see a higher frequency of live prog.
I understand that the ‘can’t be arsed’ factor is a real problem
during a weeknight or the winter months. Some of us have kids or no money (or
maybe both) but thinking it though, I believe it doesn’t have to be that much
effort, hell it doesn’t even need to be going out and seeing gigs. For example,
people could just meet up for a drink at somebody’s house, play some well loved
records and then discuss/argue into the small hours about the merits of the
music and the bands that made them. Much like this forum, you might get a
chance to hear music you would normally never buy or even know about. If
you don’t like what you hear, at least you came into contact with something new
and that can’t be a bad thing.
As mentioned, maybe this notion of a progressive club might
not hold true for all parts of the world but for example, I live in London and
although I keep my ear to the ground for prog gigs, I rarely pick up on all of
them (the paucity of real prog shows, apart from the odd festival at the London
Astoria/Mean Fiddler in the Capital is a major stumbling block, couple that
with the more than occasional lack of good media coverage and you can easily miss a
clutch of great prog events). If there was a loose club of individuals who met
up from time to time, they could exchange info on what gigs were coming up and
therefore keep more venues populated by those who care In other (but nonetheless related) news, I’m also thinking
of putting on a progressive themed open mic/acoustic night at a venue in London
at some point in the future if I can find enough acts willing to roll up. The
idea is for prog bands, who might struggle to pull a crowd all on their own but
would still like to gig in
Initially, I suppose we might hold a night of this nature once every eight weeks and see if there is enough interest to push it further. In total, we’d hope to get about three or four acts on in a night starting and finishing early enough for people to get transport home. It’s just a thought as of now but I have a small PA (good enough for vocals, keyboards and acoustic guitars), some lights and a few ideas on venues that might be interested in holding such a night. What was it Robert Fripp said about small, mobile,

I have some of these nights with Dutch friends of mine. For years already. We're with 5 people, and we regularly meet to listen to each other's cd's. Everybody has a playlist of about 5 - 7 songs, and for each meeting we prepare some lists, like the ones on PA (best instrumentalist, best lyricist etc.), only we did this before PA existed. We also go to concerts together. So that's a good idea you have, Sigod! |

I signed on about a year and a half ago to be the "director" for my area (Grand Rapids Michigan), had one meeting where only one other person showed up, and we were differently minded in the prog spectrum (I am more neo prog/art rock/symphonic, he was devoutly canterbury/RIO), and we didnt really hit it off. So I have resigned myself to being content with this board, a couple of the online stations, and my 3 year old son who loves Neal Morse and Rush. |

Hi Sigod - sounds a really good idea, I'd appreciate the chance to meet
some like minded people, hear some music, and especially, any chance to
drink beer, though, I'd pass on the nudity thing....seriously, like Jim
I live North of London - I'm near St Albans, so getting into
London is easy for me. Most of my knowledge of prog is restricted to those well known symphonic bands that dominate the top 20 on this site so the chance to explore some other music appeals. On the gig front by the way I am going to see the Syn (with Chris Squire) at the Marquee next Tuesday, 15th November - bought the album they have released which on first playing sounds good but not great, there are a couple of strong songs in there. Anyhow I will enjoy seeing Squire play in a small(er) venue. I reckon they'll be good on stage. ^^would have invited myself along on 27th but I can't make that night........ |

Putney is actually very handy for me, so if I'm free that weekend I'll definitely head along to the Half Moon. The more the merrier Chopper, I suppose I might have to wear a red rose or carry a copy of The Times like they used to do in 60's spy movies so we can identify each-other Maybe we could have a secret pass phrase like: "Are you a Collins or a Gabriel fan?" to which the reply must be: "Neither, Ray Wilson is my guy!" Then one of us punches the other in the face!  Does that sound okay? I'm not around this Saturday but do tell us how it goes. I'm in Milton keynes and can easily get to london and would be up for a good chatter on prog.. Off up norf to see VdGG this weekend in Gateshead & manchester, and hopefully meeting TP (Trouserpress) at gateshead. I guess the best night for those traveling a longer distance is a
Saturday but at the moment, I don't know of any Saturday prog gigs on
in the near future. Over and above a gig, we could all just as easily
meet up on a pub at some point. We'll all have to post our pictures in the Rogues Gallery thread so we can recognise each other. I'll post a review of the Greg Lake gig next week, it should be interesting. I've seen on his web site that his band has a guitarist and a bass player, so I'm not sure what Greg is doing (apart from presumably singing). |

Sadley, anything other than a sataday is a no can do, bloody lectures. But if you can find any sataday gigs, ill be their as fast as i can (or the public transport can atleast).

Met up with fellow archive member Phil to see The Syn play
at the Marquee Club in London last night and they were well worth a

There must be a number of us clustered around London who could meet up with some regularity. I shall make every effort to attend the Progs gig in Putney, it should be fun.
