Obvious choice: Sir Hitchcock - though he's not really a 'horror' but suspense director. A genius. I'm not very fond of horror genre. The latest I saw was "The Ring" (American one) and it was quite good. |

I feel like i need to vote for Wes Craven. I don't think Slasher Horror movies are the best, but Wes Craven has made legendary slasher movies (Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream). Both of the killers in that movies are also the two most popular horror movie halloween costumes. Wes Craven is famous on a film and culture level. The runner up or the best would have to be Romero. Land of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead are just amazing horror movies. George Romero movies are not just horror movies, they are epic horror movies. -------------

I voted for George Romero but also really like Raimi.The Evil Dead scared the crap out of me when I was younger. And while Hitchcock is a great director his movies are more suspense than horror. -------------  |

Of Hitchcock probably only "The Birds" could be named a horror movie. Roman Polanksi should be on the list; the movies "Repulsion", "Rosemary's Baby", "The Tenant" and the horror comedy "The Fearless Vampire Killers" are some of the very best of this genré. My vote goes to Murnau, by the way; his "Nosferatu" is unsurpassed. -------------  BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |

Alfred Hitchcock of course like Friede for The Byrds AND Psycho! Forget one Friede? Hello?
Also 2 others not mentioned, James Whale (Frankenstien and Bride Of) and Mario Bava (Black Sabbath and Lisa And The Devil). And I guess you can throw in William Friedkin for The Exorcist, one of the all time great horror films.
