Should be one way traffic but stranger things have happened at sea!
Technically, I would say Steurmer's the best though!

Steurmer just appears on live releases of the '80s just because rutherford couldn't
play bass and guitar at the same time, so I don't think he can be
considered as an effective member of the band.
I prefer Hackett anyway.

Daryl Stuermer is one of the most sympathetic guys in progmusic, I guess, who made one of the worst solo albums ever .
My vote is for Hackett, because he's the most all round guitarist: he plays straight rock, unusual rock, blues, folk, classical, Satie, you name it, he plays it. And how
Phillips is one of my favourite guitar players too, also versatile, but for me he's just as much a keyboard player as a guitar player.
Rutherford: I love his guitar work on And Then There Were Three and Smallcreep's Day, and he did some nice things later on, but I hate some of his guitar riffs on the later albums (as on I Can't Dance; gross)
Stuermer: nice rock style, but incomparable to the Hackett / Phillips brilliance

- Hackett: Great technique, sensitivity, compositional skills, etc
- Phillips: Almost in the same level and with a similar style, sadly he had that stage panic.
- Stuermer: Great for Jazz, not for Prog, suffered with Hackett's atmospheres.
- Rutherford: An improvised guiytar player, he's a bassist.

Hackett by a country mile.
Steurmer is an excellent player but lacks the distinctive sound that Hackett cultivated, Phillips is another player who has great technique but doesn't always engage the listener and Rutherford is a superb bassist but is nothing special as a guitarist. All of them can play better than me, mind you.

Hackett is truly the greatest. Steurmer is great, but as Ivan
said, he is more of a jazz player. Each one has their own
distinct style, and Hackett's fits Genesis the best, and his skill
definitely shows.

IMO stuermer has a pretty dull & bland style.

Hey... the name of the guy is Stuermer, not Steurmer, and yes, he is an excellent guitar player, but he is just a performer of the songs !!! He is not THE COMPOSER !!!
The man behind the great guitar compositions is STEVE HACKETT !!! He is the MAN !!!
Any doubt ? Check the DVD Once Above a Time ! And look for something of Stuermer...

Another incredilby dumbass poll...
Just ONE listen to 'Slogans' from 'Defector' should convince anyone that Hackett is not only the best Genesis guitarist but one of the most infuential (hear that hammering Mr. Van Halen??) and gifted guitarists ever...

Hard to tell. I'm not a guitarist so I cant really judge. They all sound pretty good to me, with Hackett and Rutherford having the edge in terms of sound and 'listernability' IMO.

As far as technique is concerned, Daryl Stuermer is in another league, that of Frank Gambale and Scott Henderson, he can play any music style and do a pretty good job. But Stuermer never was an official member of Genesis, just a touring member. IMO when any band hires a touring member he must be as good (if not better) than the original member he is replacing. In that context, the best Pink Floyd drummer has been Gary Wallis...
So the best Genesis official guitarist has been Steve Hackett without question. Ant Phillips is good in his own right but lacks the technique and confidence of a guitarist like Hackett. Mike Rutherford is a decent guitar player, but as a bassist he is at his best.
