BLACK SABBATH. They dropped a weird name in order to rename themselves as Earth, but since there was already a band named so, they turned their eyes to a Boris Karloff movie.

Elton John of course.

Don't shoot me I'm only the pianoplayer, Goodbye Yellow brick road, Maribou, Captain fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy and blue moves, all were nr 1 album hits.

It's arguable whether Elton John can be considered a rock group, but for me.

     I LOVE HIM.

Black Sabbath called themselves Polka Tulk Blues or something along those lines before adopting Earth

Also i would say Led Zeppelin. Do the albums have to have reached No.1 on release? LZ 1 reached no.1 after the release of LZ 2 i think.

Which classic rock band split up into two halves to work on two different albums under different names (one keeping the original name) due to a fight within the band (including threats with revolvers and knives), only to wind up making peace again while working on these two different albums, so that finally all musicians played on both?
Hint: The band in question was the result of an earlier split, which is reflected by the band's name.

Queen - they recorded a single called "Earth" under the name SMILE!

Tim Steffal was the original lead singer and bassist, Smile became Queen when Freddie Mercury joined and auditioned various bass players before Mr Right came 'John Deacon'.
