Who is John Petrie?

Why are there so many damn polls and comparisons between people?  Why is there such an obsession comparing people or comparing bands?  That's the question that needs to be answered...

I love May's unique sound but I voted John Petrucci. I love his clinical perfection and his extreme technical abilities.

Petrucci is the more talented musician by far

Petrucci. May is also great though, but Petrucci is just unbelievable ... I can only recommend his DVD "Rock Discipline".

May is a guitar legend! A truly unique talent.

However I vote for the new kid, Petrucci..........he is simply brilliant!

May.

Petrucci is hardly rocket science...

May. He's technically excellent (possibly not quite as good as Petrucci but he doesn't attempt to be as flash so who knows) and he makes far better music. And he's got a degree in astrophysics - all the best people have!

...and he made his own guitar...

John is a much more skilled musician and he does not play with boygroups and he doesn't want

Robbie Williams to join his band.

 Brian writes better music ?

Well , Bad Religion has much more intelligent songs than Fat Bottomed Girls.

er...

"more skilled" is debatable - different skills, yes.

Who cares about who the musicians want to work with - that doesn't affect their abilities.

Queen/Brian wrote one or two more songs than "Fat Bottomed Girls" - and it's actually more intelligent than you might think.

(Queen were taking the p***, as they so often did - shame some bozos can't spot that. I guess it goes over their heads.).

I have to admit that Brian's hair is bad, though - and it's a bit cheap not to use that sixpence to go out and buy a real plectrum.

I can agree with most parts of your reply. Please don't believe that I hate Queen.

The Prophet's Song is really good for example.Altough I think Freddy was the greatest

  member of Queen.

I got upset about that Robbie Williams -thing, because Brian can't think seriously, that RW

can stand in for Freddy even for one gig.

Everyone has the right to prefer Brian May, no promblems he's a good guitarist, but I still prefer

Petrucci after all.

Queen were one of the actually one of the most educated rock bands.  Freddie Mercury had a degree in graphic design, Roger Taylor was a qualified (or almost-qualified) dentist, John Deacon had a BSc in Electronics, and Brian May gave up working on his PhD in Astrophysics to become a professional musician.

I think it's the British sense of humour - you either get it or you don't.

Since decimalisation (sp?), that sixpence is now worth a lot more than a plectrum.  In fact, he's probably got the most expensive guitar pick on the planet.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't think Robbie Williams is that bad.  Yes he's a pop singer, but the lyrics aren't always your typical happy pop-type lyrics (and I think he has a hand in writing his songs, unlike many other singers around today).  He knows how to work a crowd, and his voice is the type that could sing more than one type of music.  While he's no Freddie, I don't think he would be that bad a replacement, and people would probably be surprised by the results if they could get over their dislike of the notion.

I actually thought it wasn't that bad, but I guess we can agree to disagree.

He's quite a showman and knows how to work a crowd. I watched some of a concert of his on TV recently and although a lot of the material is not my thing, he is a good performer. Whilst he's not like Freddie (who could ever be), I imagine he'd probably make a fair stab at fronting them.

Oh, my vote's for Brian May.

I consider that the main quality of a guitarist should be the "feeling" and to a less extent, in order : originality, technic and speed. I voted therefore for the guitar master Brian May, who belongs to the "feeling" guitarist league : Gilmour, Blackmore, Howe, Satriani, Vai, Iommi, etc.

It was a joke

Anyway, sixpence pre-decimalisation is equal to 2 and a half pence (I think...).

On the other hand, I suppose that Brian May's sixpence is going to be worth a fortune to a Queen fan

Got to be Brian May for me- whilst I wouldn't doubt that Petrucci is immensely talented player, I couldn't remember any of his solos after hearing their albums a few times. Brian May, however, plays clever solos that are economical and hummable, just like the best (in my opinion) solos should be.

In Petrucci's case, I'd describe his playing as 'musical wallpaper'- it serves its purpose and is very presentable, yet is really just there for show purposes...

I know it was a joke.

And sixpence might be equivalent to 2 and a half pence, but I would think that sixpence coins are now worth a lot more as collector's items - which was the point I was trying to make.
