I would say about 50%, with another 20% psychadelic or late 60's rock, the rest classics albums of rock, hard rock and metal.....

Believe me I have something of everything from Sweet, to Partirdge family, Mussorsky to Gershwin, Janis Joplin to Grateful dead, Fairport convention to Incredible string band, Sinatra to Lou rawls, Streisant to Sandy Denny, Cirque du soleil to soundtracks, even some Disco.....I guess I have had some phases but Prog has been steady forever.

Sorry no Country, Opera, or rap.

I voted 40%. It must be somewhere between 30 and 40% in fact. I have a comprehensive list at home, sorted by years the way iguana did it which is very interesting.

My "oldest" released record is "Please, please me" from The  Beatles, 1963; my most recent one is the last "New Model Army", 2005. The years from which I have the most records are 1969, 1970 and 1971 (Over 100 of each year, all rock genres); the year from which I have the less records must be (I need to check) 1987 or 1988 (less than 10).

Most of my prog collection (around 500) is made of 1970's symphonic prog. The rest is standard 1960's and 70's rock, late 70's and early 80's new wave and a lot of alternative bands since the 90's.

About 25% of our vast CD collection is pop/rock (the rest is mainly classical, with substantial doses of jazz, new age, and mandarin pop as well). Of that 25%, about 30% is prog. So I come at lower than 10%, which is a choice not listed.

Wow, how anal am I, I actually had to dust off my calculator and do the calculation -with my good ole grade D math.

As for the results, well, according to the definion here on progarchives it would be 33%, but according to my own stricter definion of prog the figure drops to 27,5%... Either way, I was able to go for 30% with a good conscience

Ah, but I would change it for less than 10% if that figure contained several hundred prog CD's as was the case with somebody in this thread...! Someday, someday..........................................

Just a few years ago I listened to skater-rock or punk (I once played in a punk-band). Then, one year ago I discovered the progressive rock for myself and now I listen to prog-rock as often as I can.
Prog-rock is the only music I listen to (most of it is Gentle Giant).
Together with the other guitar-player of our band who now listens to prog either I was able to change the style of the band from punk into prog-rock (nearly the biggest change that can be possible I think). Now we're looking for a keyboarder.

Yeah, a 100% of the music I listen to is prog!!!

Less than 10 %.  All I really have that's prog is Close to the Edge, Moving Pictures, and Seasons End.  Out of roughly 100 CDs and Vinyls.

Though I do have The Magician's Birthday by Uriah Heep, if you consider that prog.

Oh, and I forgot the 12 or so Pink Floyd CDs I have.  Still not much more than 10% though.

Only about 10-20% (I voted 10) since I'm fairly new to prog. Other stuff I listen(ed) to (favourite albums between brackets):

  • Death Metal: Death (Human, Symbolic), Obituary (Cause Of Death), Hypocrisy (Osculum Obscenum), ...
  • Black Metal: Dimmu Borgir (Stormblast),  Cradle Of Filth (Dusk And Her Embrace), ...
  • Heavy Metal: Iron Maiden (Piece Of Mind), Iced Earth (Horror Show), ...
  • Punk: The Clash (Sandinista!),
  • Hardcore: Sick Of It All (Scratch The Surface),  Biohazard (Urban Discipline), ...
  • Celtic/Folk: The Pogues (Rum, Sodomy and The Lash), The t**sers (Purgatory), Flogging Molly (Drunken Lullabies), ...
  • (Local) Pop music: An Pierle (Mud Stories), Kaiser Chiefs, ...
and much, much more. Thanks to Opeth and Dream Theater I gradually got into prog. My current prog collection is limited to

  • Pink Floyd (most albums, except Delicate Sound of Thunder and The Wall Live)
  • Genesis (most Gabriel era stuff, except Trespass)
  • Van der Graaf Generator
  • Rush
  • Yes
  • Frank Zappa
  • Sigur Ros
  • Prog metal: Ayreon, Dream Theater, Opeth, ...

I'll answer that one for Jean: The collection accumulated over the years; we both already had a rather big one when we met. There were some duplicates in it after they were merged, but it still was big. However, as we grew older we started preferring listening to the radio; WDR 3 is an excellent channel. We still listen to the odd album from our collection from time to time, and there are some artists we still buy all new albums from. But nevertheless it is the radio for us most of the time. And of course the music we play ourselves.
It is like having a big library. Why does one not throw away a book after having read it? Because books are like old friends; you can return to them whenever you want. It is the same with albums.

About 50 procent is pure prog, about 25 is related to prog (Queen, The Who, Deep Purple, Beatles etc.) and 25 is not that much prog-related (Dylan, Springsteen, Clash).

But I've got less prog records then non-progs, it's just hard to get CD's with prog.

(Edit: I listen to friends records Approve )

I'd say 40% of our collection is prog, with the rest made up of various electronica, jazz, classical, hard/heavy rock etc; currently on a big prog listening jag though

I own a 3500 albums and 2500 prerecorded cds.  I have all kinds of different music in my collection from classical to world music.  My prog and jazz cds are included more in my playlist.

I'd say only 10% considering how I have many other non-prog music. I even have some country and bluegrass.Shocked

At a guess, around 30-40%. It depends on what one's definition of "Prog" is, though.

I'd say about 50% of my collection is prog and the other 40% is made up of mostly jazz with some blues and folk thrown in and just a couple of classical and pop disk here and there.

Somewhere around 30%, the remainder being an even split between classic and modern rock.  How disappointingly balanced.

Oddly enough, I would say that only about 30 to 40 precrent of my music is prog (That includes not only the amount of prog bands I own, but also each subsequent release and/or version of that release, including my Tool vinyls.), but in terms of what I'm listening to most of the time these days, it is 100% prog! I have my CD traveling case full of nothing but prog acts, pro and indie, past and current. So yeah, I'm sure the prog side of my music collection will continue to grow and grow. :)
