I'm going with Epica... I think that's their best. After Forever in 2nd place.

The Gathering's How To Measure A Planet. That four album run is pretty awesome, from Mandylion to If Then Else, with Nighttime Birds and this featured album in between.
How abut that 28 1/2 minute title track! Good memories.

I think the main reason for their popularity in this poll is that a) they really don't sound like any of the other bands b) are more 'progressive' than most and c) they aren't metal...  LOL

Well they were metal in the 90s, HTMAP being the first album they distanced from metal and they continued to do that on their coming albums.

^ Funny I was considering this last night when I noticed they are listed under Post Metal which surprised me. I almost think Heavy Prog is more their style, but they also went from that heavy sound of Mandylion and Nighttime Birds to a more atmospheric sound even trip hop stuff as the years went by. I spun the two albums I mentioned last night and man I dig their sound. Heavy and plodding with that angel singing over top. I have How To Measure A Planet? up today. They just don't seem to fit Post Metal when I look at the other bands in that sub genre. Just my opinion.
And that looks like a model cat. Love cats! Mine has fleas right now.

Here's how metalstorm tags them. Not bad... Smile
1989-1992 Death doom metal
1993-1994 Doom metal
1995-1997 Atmospheric gothic metal
1998- Experimental rock

I thought they'd tag them as atmospheric rock in their post 1998 sound, as they did with Anathema. It would be accurate as well IMO.
oh well...

I appreciate that list from metalstorm Cristi, it at least makes me understand the rational here to put them in Post Metal. I keep forgetting about those two earlier albums, and a band is usually placed in the sub genre they start out in. Not always, but I guess their sound on those first two were like My Dying Bride and the like?

I think their debut was influenced by Paradise Lost's 1991 album Gothic, but i think The Gathering improved on that formula. I've always loved that album, both as a 90s kid and an adult listener.

Their second album was a strange release because they could not maintain a stable line-up. That was the result, not bad but not that good kind of album, go figure... Smile

I must admit, I never listened to any of their albums prior to Mandylion (their best imho) and do see their style as experimental atmospheric rock.. it would be a good tag.
