Each of the albums above I consider to have non-prog elements.  Which one do you think is the least prog?  I chose Aqualung because the only progressive track on it is My God.  Everything else just seems like classic rock (albeit great classic rock).  If I forgot an album, go ahead and say which one.

I voted for "The Lamb..." Tune like "The lamb' and "Back in New York City", or "It" are everything but prog. They set the path for "Sledgehammer" and other 80ies dance-pop-funk PG forgettable things.

Got to admit, I'm a little bit confused...I thought these were all quite prog?  I have to admit to not knowing the 'Tull album.

I suppose big Yes fan though I am I'd have to say Wonderous Stories is not very prog, neither is Turn of the century...but then again the album has the title track and Awaken, two of their best tracks.

I´ve always said "Dark side" is not prog. I once even opened a poll on that. The question was: "Is Dark side contemporary adult prog". (contemporary adult, as that cathegory in records stores for old musicians making soft ballads)...Irony of course.

The only almost prog composition in it is "Any colour you like", which lasts for only 3:25 minutes.

About the others, ..Probably Tull´s could be on the list, but still, it has a lot of complex ideas within. "The Lmab" should definitely not be there. Listen to "in the cage", "Lamia", "Anyway", "riding the scree", the title track etc. There´s way too many prog elements all around. That could never be "clasicc rock" nor "pop"....What´s the point?, just bashing "The lamb" ?. You should have listed "The wall" instead. An album that hardly has any rock.

I'm sorry I guess we listen to TLLDOB a little differently. You can't judge
the album by a few songs. It is the album as a whole (which is obviously
prog.) These songs sound that way to convey a certain purpose in the
music and in NO way did this album set the path for 80s dance pop funk
hahahhaa.

And for Peter Gabriel, his solo career is very good IMO. He may have a
couple forgettable dance/pop/funk songs but they all have good ideas
and value behind why he's singing them. Have you heard his newest
album "UP"? I think it's fantastic and it conveys a lot of emotion (the most
I've heard him have since PG3.)

Also, "The lamb" (song) could not be anything but prog, listen to the piano intro, the middle section, the bizarre aproach to the music and sounds. That could never make of this song a danceable number.

Anyway, "Dark side" is right now 9 times less progressive than "The lamb" according to this poll.

Ah, wonderful, one of my favourite private prog musings is pondering how on earth DSOTM became to be seen as a progressive rock album -and surprisingly often the most essential one a that! It came out in 1973 when prog already had a strong precense in the world of popular music so it wasn't exactly influencial in a prog-sense, was it? Of course, it might have acted as a gentle gateway for many people into the world of prog and thus add to prog's popularity. In either case, I would be very interested to read people's reasons for thinking that DSOTM is prog so go ahead and try to swaye me!

Must be that time signature change during Money. How radical.

Don't get me wrong, I love most of the tunes, I really do, but they do have more in common with classic rock than anything else. I never list any of my PF albums as part of my prog collection. The band experimented, true, but that does not prog make in my mind. After all, The Beatles experimented, as well, and I don't see them listed in the archives.

As for the rest of the poll nominees, well, Aqualung is quite a good choice, too, not too proggy as far as I can tell.

Going For The One has more than enough prog elements, no question about that.

Can't comment on Lamb as *gulp* I've yet to hear it...

I find it hard to accept DSOTM as a prog album. It is classic rock with a mix of spacy haze and psychedelia, and you find almost every song on the radio (excepting only "On the Run," even though I've heard it play after "Breathe" once, and "Any Clour You Like")

I wouldn't cast a vote on this one. I don't think none of albums from the list are less progressive than the other...

Instead of Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway I would have We Can't Dance and there we have the least progressive of all...

Probably DSOTM, according to the way most people on this website see prog... However, I tend to disagree with those people's views, and think that such a question doesn't have much sense at all.

Posted By: richardh

DSOTM works as a blend of prog, rock, soul and electronic music. It isn't 100% prog by any means.

The others are all prog albums but funnily enough not as good

Too different question!  I must admit, that it's difficult to me contemplate albums in a such analystic view. "Aqualung" pleases me most of them... Isn't it a bit prog album though, as there's a mad bearded man playing flute on each tracks?

Hey Fender, mine was nothing but a comment to have a little fun, there´s not such thing as "Easy listening prog" anyway.

 Stonebeard, thanks.

Now, The poll´s results can´t be right. Yesterday, "Dark side" had 12 votes while "The Lamb" had only 2, being therefore the most progressive of them. Statistics usually don´t work the way they have in thi poll.

Yet, it doesn´t matter, "In the cage" has 20 times more prog than all "Dark side" songs together......Or wait, "In the run" is very experimental, complex, diverse, creative and original....Mhh, "Dark side" is progger yeah¡¡. I´m fully convinced now.

THis is a silly thread . How is the lamb winning ?

Prog theme , prog playing , prog lyrics , prog band ( at that time )

It is surely 80% prog . The exceptions would be

Cuckoo Cucoon ( prog elements ) , In the Rapids and It.

what about fly on a windshield /  broadway melody , In the Cage , Back in New york City

If  TLLDOB isn't proggy enough for you you really  need to take your medication

You see it's people who can't admit that something they love has a fault that cause me stress (not that not really being prog is a bad thing).  Be happy. I admit "The lamb" is not "pure prog" since it has some simple songs, probably even pop song. which I mention next: "Counting out time", "Cuckoo cocoon", "In the rapids", and  "the carpet crawlers". Any other songs apart of these are definitely not pop, nor plain classic rock, nor anything from the mainstream. ....I dare you to mention one that doesn´t have one or more than one detail that places the song apart from ordinary music.

Now, about "Dark side", mention one single song that could be considered "pure prog" ¡¡. Or better, mention more than 7 songs from "The wall" that has any rock. Not to mention Prog.

"Atom Heart mother" and "meddle" are filled with pop and simplistic songs...these albums are some of the least prog albums, still, those simplistic songs don´t make of these albums "less prog" do they?. At least not to the general opinion eyes.

the result of this poll is ridiculous.

Disregarding the absurd number of votes for "The lamb", "Going for the one" is prog for only the first 5 minutes of Awaken. "Dark side´s" most progressive moment is the first minute in "Time" after the clocks sound effects.

Aqualung and Dark Side of the Moon are more prog than most people give credit for.  Both contain elements of more common prog albums, but more importantly, both are concept albums, which is prog in and of itself.

Thanks mate now we can get on with our beautiful friendship!

Pink Floyd are really just a rock band who had a dab in progressive music Piper and Animals are the only 2 Prog albums they made. The rest are really rock albums with some prog tracks (AHM, Meddle, ASOS, The Wall, DSOTM)

And in the case of DSOTM I'm still waiting for somebody to point those "elements of more common prog albums" out for me. Only Eduardo has come up with a clear example so far and he doesn't even think of that record as prog! (Wise as he is )

Also, those of you, who are eager to defend the progginess of DSOTM, ought to come up with something more substancial than just pointing to the actual concept. First of all, it's not an idea at all exclusive to prog. (Bruce Springsteen's "Rising" anyone? And that is just one example.) Second of all, the music is of umm, some importance as well, if I have not all together misunderstood this whole prog thingy... Which reminds me of what one of the interviewees in the documentary The Making of The Dark Side of the Moon said, stating that most people don't even realise how very simple the music on said album is. What other band (without as much as one "prog-standard" musician at that) can get away with making simple music, no matter how great, and have it top a prog ranking list >hint Mojo/Q special issue of prog hint<

Did I provoke enough to have a clear answer now?
