I feel 1989-1991 was the sweet spot for alternative rock. I include prog bands like Primus. So many great albums. List the albums from the year you chose that speak to you.

God... firstly, how are you defining Alternative Rock? what is, what isn't? also, can you give us some idea of what albums were released in each year, which might come under this banner? I have to say, this is the vaguest poll I think I've ever seen? ------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me. For me, Gish was the best of that crop. The whole grunge/alt thing was largely marketing in my opinion. Everyone who thought Nirvana/Pearl Jam were so groundbreaking, that sound had basically been covered long before and better by other bands. Husker Du, Replacements, Minutemen, Firehose, on and on--most of those early 90s explosion were nothing new. But Gish was a cool twist that actually rocked and felt like, Whoa, what is this? Fair question. I mean non-prog, never rap, not Punk, not country, not 70's classic rock bands, Heavy Metal or jazz. Here's a partial list from my favorite year- 1990 If you were to map these albums, they would form the fuzzy boundaries for the type of albums. That said, there are forms of this rock that I don't like and didn't include. I hope you get the idea. Then I've gone for 1990 for Cocteau Twins' Heaven or Las Vegas and Depeche Mode's Violator. 1991 strikes me as a classic year with Nirvana, Soundgarden (and Swans, which I adore) if they all count. By the way as a young man, I was not into any of that stuff (or little of it, I should say) at the time. It's mostly the music I got into much more recently that is meaningful to me. My tastes and interests have not been stagnant and I continue to discover new music and avenues for many decades to get into and love. That said, I'm hardly the most voracious music consumer at this forum. Nor the most adventurous or open-eared/ open-minded. |

Lot's of great music across those three years and I have many favorites. About half of what Cindy listed for 1990 would be among my own list of favorites. I think I will go with 1991. Some of mine might fall under alt-metal. The last one on my list is in PA as prog metal. I do not think they are prog metal. | Of significance to the history of "alternative rock," 1991 was the year of the first Lolapalooza. Rollins Band, Butthole Surfers, Ice-T with Body Count, Nine Inch Nails, Living Color, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Jane's Addiction. I was at one of the shows in Irivne, CA. |

I'm not good when it comes to rating years. I tend to forget what was in what year, and the year indications in my system are often one year off, which is bad for voting in a poll like this. Also the alt rock label isn't very informative, apparently it can apply to all kinds of stuff with potentially very little in common. Awesome albums from that period include (leaving out anything that is on PA) Shudder to Think - Funeral at the Movies (my favourite band that came up around that time) Test Dept. - Gododdin They Might Be Giants - Flood Einstuerzende Neubauten - Haus der Luege Joe Jackson - Blaze of Glory Marc Ribot - Rootless Cosmopolitans Suzanne Vega - Days of Open Hand Nirvana - Nevermind
