This song celebrates the winter solstice and the perennial battle between the Holly King and his brother the Oak King at the point of the year where the old sun dies and the new one is reborn.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Indeed, it is evident that this celestial phenomenon is occurring on a global scale. However, we, as individuals, remain perpetually influenced by the temporal conventions of our respective locales.

To be precise, the solstice occurred Saturday, 21 December 2024 at 09:20 UTC.

I bought this Jethro Tull EP in 76' ( I believe?)..from a Rock journalist who later that year managed Rock bands. It ended up being my favorite recording to play at Christmas. I recorded it on to cassette and drove around in the snow listening to it. In the early 2000s my brother scanned the front cover and designed a special inside jacket and duplicate of back cover as well. Burned it on to cdr from different Tull cds. ...and some tracks were bonus material ...for example...Pan Dance and March, The Mad Scientist. It's a very enjoyable...but it was never properly released on cd. A shame that the original EP wasn't duplicated as a mini LP/EP as with the other Tull Christmas EP and 76' release could have been mini LPs in a clamshell box set along with a lot of bonus material originally found on the 20th Years Box Set
...which contained Christmas oriented material..that was very good...but Ian Anderson recently released a different kind of Christmas Box set and it's based on different ideas like live recordings of the later line ups ...and there really isn't a representation of that original Christmas material from the 70s and early 80s.
