Anyone have suggestions for some Post Rock of the more upbeat/experimental variety that is more than just jangly guitars & air scapes? I will take songs or albums...

I'm a bit stuck for ideas, as most of the Post Rock I've listened to so far is just jangly guitars and air scapes.

I don't know upbeat post-rock, the genre is often melancholic, moody, atmospheric. I will create a list of a few bands i find worth checking out if that's ok with you.

"Upbeat" is very subjective. I listen to a lot of post rock but arguably most of it isn't so upbeat (I'm rather stunned that somebody may suggest Swans here  ), but then what do I know. Much of Tortoise seems rather upbeat to me and also with a healthy done of experiment, but you know them already.Maybe Kante fits your profile. They are classified here as post rock and have some rather upbeat stuff, also they mix styles a lot. Isn't this beautiful (both from the Zweilicht album)? One may just wonder whether their material that fits your criteria is really still post rock, but anyway... and even they are mostly somewhat gloomy. Another upbeat one by Tristeza, despite the band's name. Very upbeat German post rock, not "progressive" enough to be on PA (you may also try To Rococo Rot, who are more experimental but not quite that upbeat, also quite electronic): |

You could try the third album by Greek band Deadfile, although their bandname doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence that they'll be "lively and upbeat".  DEADFILE File under philosophical Post Rock. If you've ignored Greek prog up to now, then that may be the worst decision since Socrates decided to drink the hemlock. Deadfile are from the sun-kissed island of Corfu in northwestern Greece and where, during the hazy lazy days of summer, there's ample time to study your flip-flops on the beach, whilst contemplating the Oneness of Being and Nothingness - as you do. After all, they don't call this kind of thoughtful, reflective music "Shoegazing" for nothing. The haunting, cinematic music of the enigmatically-tilled "Applied Oneironautics" is as creepy and suspense-filled as a Hitchcock thriller where, at any moment, you half-expect a knife-wielding maniac dressed in women's clothes to leap out of the shadows - although it's probably just transvestite comedian Eddie Izzard playing a prank again. Okay, so the music's not as thrilling as Sharon Stone's unforgettable leg-crossing scene in Basic Instinct, but at least no one dies here. Adding to the evocative atmosphere and meditative mood are the delicate tinkling ivories of a classical piano, combined with floating ethereal voices that drift gently in and out of the consciousness like a distant dream. The calm, tranquil atmosphere of this deeply hypnotic album makes it ideal listening for late at night with the lights turned down low, so if you're not fast asleep and dead to the world by the end of this introspective album, then you're either an insomniac, or you drank too much coffee before heading up the stairs to Bedfordshire. All in all then, "Applied Oneironautics" is as studious and thoughtful as a night spent in a Greek temple under the stars, contemplating the meaning of life, love and happiness, or wondering what on earth Level 42 is in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. ^ Upbeat may not necessarily mean "upbeat" in this context bc post rock is very drawn out on the surface. I would assume most material by the Swans in the last 10 years would not fit the modern Post ethos of how I described it. As an aside, I never understood why post rock (falling under the Prog umbrella) sounds so much like soundtrack ambience in numbers? Like, would it hurt more bands to rock out a little and experiment?!

Chances are they do what they like to do, and you can take it or leave it, but not change it.
I'm fine with the post rock approach as it is, and if I feel I want something different, I search for it outside that genre. The understated somewhat minimalist approach renouncing some standard elements that certain listeners want to put their teeth in is pretty much the essence of post rock. By the way, some Tarentel albums are quite experimental (not necessarily the first one, which is just great). |

...And I think there's plenty of experiments - and even more rocking out to be found. But of course experimenting will eventually experiment you out of any given genre. Just like a Symphonic Prog band who simply love to experiment and do it all the time, will end up not being Symphonic Prog anymore. |
