Heres My Prog Collection ELP: Brain Salad Surgery Yes: Tales From Topographic Oceans, Relayer, Fragile Genesis: Selling England By The Pound Jehtro Tull:J-Tull Dot Com, Crest Of A Knave Camel: Moonmadness Eloy: Dawn Pink Floyd: The Wall Mahavishnu Orchestra: Inner Mounting Flame, Lost Trident Sessions, Visions Of The Emerald Beyond Weather Report: 8:30, Black Market Dream Theatre: Images and Words, 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulance, Live at Budokan, Falling Into Infinity, Change of Seasons, Metropolis 2 Nightwish: Oceanborn Queensryche: Mindcrime Yngwie Malmsteen( I consider him prog though i suppose he really is not) Trilogy, Rising Force, G3 Orphaned Land: Mabool Alright bascially i discovered prog in July a few of these i had before than but most i have bought since than. My main interest is Prog-Metal but i want to get a good Overview of the "classics" so keeping in mind i plan to buy dsotm and wish you were here by pink floyd soon, what other prog "classics" do i need to add to my collection, also what prog-metal should i check out thanks for any hlp |

ELP: Brain Salad Surgery 3/5 Yes: Fragile 4/5 (I love the album, but it's not a masterpiece imo) Genesis: Selling England By The Pound 5/5 (If you like this then I highly recommend picking up anything 70-76 Genesis, Foxtrot is my pick) Jethro Tull: hmm, I havn't heard those JT albums but Thick As A Brick is great, Passion Play is another one of my favs, Aqualung is another. Camel: Moonmadness 4/5 , Snow Goose is an amazing album, all instrumental. and my favorite Camel album is Mirage (listen to the sample of 'Lady Fantasy' on the website) Pink Floyd: The Wall 3/5 (I love pink floyd but not this one, I can't get into it at all, since you're already getting 'WYWH' and 'DSotM' I'll recommend Meddle.) Mahavishnu Orchestra (I cant rate the albums because I only have parts of each of them, but what I have is amazing) Dream Theater: Images and Words 3/5 (not sure why people think it's a masterpiece, what am I missing?) 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulance 2/5 (A few great songs, but a lot of filler, not my fav DT album) Change of Seasons 4/5 (the title song is great, maybe a little drawn out, but the covers are a let down) Metropolis II 4/5 (My personal favorite from DT but it's a little too pretentious to get a 5/5 from me) Yngwie Malmsteen, I don't have any albums by him but I do have some tracks, which I liked at first because he's SO FAST but to me it grows old because of the lack of emotion. OK so based on what you have I recommend...Genesis - Foxtrot then entire 70-76 catalogue if you want more Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick then Aqualung Yes - Close to the Edge is a must, and if you want more I would go with The Yes Album then Tales from Topographic Oceans. Camel - Mirage, then Snow Goose Pink Floyd - Meddle then Animals And a few other bands you need to check out - King Crimson - In The Court of The Crimson King first after that Red and Lark's Tongues in Aspic Van der Graaf - Pawn Hearts, Godbluff Gentle Giant - Octopus (I'll warn you, they're diff and very hard to get into, give it a couple listens first) I could go on and on but I don't want to overwhelm you. -------------

Few more suggestions for you to spend your hard earned on - if you're
into the Mahavishnu Orchestra, you really must get Birds of Fire - same
personnel as Inner Mounting Flame and Lost Trident Sessions. I think
most people that know the band consider either "Birds" or ""Inner
Mounting Flame" is their best work. I'm a big fan as you may have
guessed! You have two good Weather Report albums - you also might want to try "Heavy Weather" which includes "Birdland", maybe their best known track. It was Jaco Pastorius first full album with them (he joined half-way through Black Market I think). You might like Frank Zappa's Hot Rats. I'm not big into prog-metal but I would make two suggestions...Tool's "Lateralus" (which if you read reviews you will see divides opinion but is certainly worth checking out); and King Crimson's "Red" (OK the latter isn't really prog metal but I recommend it as your introduction to them). And for Yes, you should add Close to the Edge sometime. |

Your collections of Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd could use some dramatic
expansions. Nonbody will doubt that you need a copy of Close to
the Edge. Tarkus and ELP's debut are good ones to pick up as
well. No King Crimson? How about Mahavishnu's Birds of Fire... |

I reccomend King Crimson especially. Start off with red and in the court of the crimson king, and go off from there.
Birds of fire, of course. Magma-live, for some strange fusion. John Zorn-naked city, just for fun, it is a modern "classic", you might say. Metal-wise, I'd say check out opeth-orchid. Later opeth, you either love or hate, but orchid is pretty well recieved. Try Tool-lateralus for some great "different" prog metal. What I reccomend the most for metal is to get into real metal, because metal is a really competitive genre and some of the best stuff ever isn't prog. |
