Subject: Cover songs of acts we like and don't like

One complaint or observation I have seen sometimes is being too much about the song (and focusing on the "hits"). Why I often like to focus on songs in the forum is because that is easier to share, and then therefore discover and discuss, than whole albums. Usually when I share songs I appreciate the whole albums and choose ones that resonate with me or caught my ear early. I am someone who often likes to move from generalities to specifics (detail-oriented). Of course one might generally not like a band while liking particular songs. And one might not like the song done by a band/artist, but like a cover version of the band.
The other day a not-appreciating Cardiacs post came up where my choice was "Dirty Boy" (it took me a while of listening to the lyrics to realise how "dirty" I think that boy is, by the way. Keep your royal jelly in hand, I'll stick to honey in tea).
Here is the original:
And here are two covers that I like:
Not sure if there are those here who might appreciate either of those covers and dislike the Cardiacs track.
I was wondering if there are any covers of "Prog" (some don't think of Cardiacs as Prog, but I do) songs that you like where you dislike the original. And what are some of your favourite "Prog" or progressive covers where you love the original and the cover.
This cover of Robert Wyatt's Sea Song done by Rachel Unthank & The Winterset is one of my favourites of a song I love in its Wyatt form (love various versions involving her).
While I actually loved ELP's "Trilogy" at one time, I kind of went off it, but I still love this cover by Jad&Den Quartet.
And mentioning the odd cover of a not-Prog song is fine too... Me talking Portishead became something of an in-joke after a response I got on it, even if only funny to me. Now I feel like it's kind of wrong when I don't mention Portishead. Rather like how most every Dream Theater topic at one topic got Magma thrown in. I suspect that I would prefer a Magma cover of Dream Theater than a Dream Theater cover of Magma, although it might be fun to hear James LaBrie sing in Kobaian.
I like the ABBA original, but this version hits me harder.
I prefer Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower.

Not a "prog" song by any means, but Yes' cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "America" is just tremendous. I much prefer the cover over the original.

That's one where I much prefer the original to the cover. The Simon & Garfunkel version resonates way more with me than the Yes version. I love the S&G song (and it touches me emotionally).

I went to see Yes in concert on 22 September, 1972 without having heard "Close to the Edge" and fully expecting to hear "America!"
Imagine my surprise when the disco-ball came down, and the opening strains to "Close to the Edge" began....!
The song just went on, and on, and on....I was amazed!!
This is exactly how Chris Squire looked!! I really don't remember if they played "America, but I agree with you about the song!

Dream Theater inspired covers made by various lesser known acts/bands could make an entire list on their own, but this caught me by a surprise, both due to the song of choice and how obscure the cover is: http://vikingguitar.bandcamp.com/track/1881-phantom-of-the-opera" rel="nofollow - vikingguitar.bandcamp.com/track/1881-phantom-of-the-opera

I just stumbled upon this video and could have posted it on the Peter Sinfield thread. Toyah and Robert Fripp talk about Greg Lake and his Xmas classic. The whole of Toyah's cover is shown at the end of the video. I well remember it when it came out and was so pleased that a major pop artist liked this. Always had a high opinion of her since. She is lovely and Robert is a very 'Lucky Man' (see what I did there lol)

I have posted the first one in an older thread with an overlapping theme. One of my favorite cover versions ever, but I love the original too. Actually kind of true-or close to the original, but still very unique:
I just wish Cécile McLorin Salvant's jazzy/ghostly version of Wuthering Heights was longer:
-Also I think Brad Mehldau's whole double album Jacob's Ladder is amazing. He interpretates Rush (Tom Sawyer and Jacobs Ladder) Gentle Giant (Cogs in Cogs) and Yes (Starship Trooper). His latter version is perhaps my favorite. A version of spinetingling beauty, of a song I never cared all that much about. I learned just now that the amazing Cécile McLorin Salvant is a guest singer on it. To me everything on this album surpass the original material. Not that its nessecarely "better", but I'm personally more engaged. I only genuinely loved the original of Cogs in Cogs on beforehand, so this album has made me appreciate Rush and Yes more than before. And it still grows with every listen:
Not exactly a prog cover, but they are both represented at PA, so: Tori Amos / Trevor Horn covering Kendrick Lamar's Swimming Pools (Drank) made me aware of the depth of that song in a very touching way:
In 2014 I saw Slowdive perform a 10-minute + version of Syd Barrett's Golden Hair live, and it was sublime. I have a early 90's studio-and a Peel Session-version, (plus an arguably better sounding long live version than the one underneath). But this live take from the same tour as I saw them them, shows this blue haired girl crying all the way through the song "went viral" and was a part of Slowdive's ressurection. Once dismissed and butchered by critics in the wake of Grunge, but a little like GY!BE - a whole new generation connect with them. So they are more popular now than they ever were:
Finally perhaps The Residents one true song of pure unabashed beauty: their version of Hank Williams Six More Miles (to the Graveyard) feel like it's totally undistanced and unironic...
-I don't know if I'm replying in the correct way. But if I do, I probably have loads of similar "takes". As I kind of collect them.

The first version of "Born To Be Wild" that I'd heard was on Slade's "Slade Alive!", and there is also a version of the song on Blue Öyster Cult's "On Your Feet Or On Your Knees". I prefer both of these to Steppenwolf's original.

features beautiful artwork by renowned NYC illustrator Arik Roper.

I have cheched out various music and found some really wonderful to my tastes music.
Here is "Igor Krutogolov's Toy Orchestra plays live "A Little God In My Hands" by SWANS"
I won't say that I prefer it to the Swans original, but it is fun.
And I really like this cover of Swans' "Killing for Company" (a fave of mine by Swans) by synth and dream poppy-band Tempers. I like how different it sounds.

hi,
MM always did someone that he thought had better lyrics, or was an important writer.
Bob Dylan was his favorite in every album. The Bruce stood up for one album, and it was a better version than the original. And then he did Mike Heron. And I think he went back to Bob Dylan ... honestly, these are the best and most "caring" of just about any covers ... some of them beautifully done.
Bob Dylan certainly has his followers ... Sandy Denny was a huge fan and did many of his songs. And even Brian Ferry did the same.

It seems, though, that members of what
would later become Yes, as well as Keith Emerson, were not so
enthusiastic about the original of Paul Simon's song as they actually
appreciated already a cover of 'America' done by Scottish keyboardist
Billy Ritchie, who performed the song in the repertoire of his
progressive trio called 1-2-3 (later renamed into Clouds) at the
Swinging London club scene, where they became a sort of underground
attraction with their original style. For instance, Pete Townshend,
remembering those times, once said that 1966-1967 gigs of 1-2-3 were
more interesting to him than Pink Floyd at the same time period. Those
concerts of 1-2-3 actually marked an important moment in the evolution
of progressive music, since Billy Ritchie & 1-2-3 influenced many.
This is a live recording of 1-2-3 version of 'America' from the Marquee Club in 1966.
