Hey, hoping some people might be be able to help by posting any albums that sound quite unique, original, innovative and/or experimental from this year (or just don't sound the same as other bands). They need not be in PA, heck this year is still being populated with albums and generic Prog tends to lack in originality, but it should be "progressive".

Please add links if you can to listen to the music; thanks in advance.

Pedro (aka Moskkito) posted this in MikeEnRegalia's 2024 albums topic:

Hi,

I'm still listening, but in reality, I am also turning off more stuff than I ever have, because so much of it sounds the same as many other bands.

I'll try to make a list of things I am/have enjoyed, though so far, it's not as good a list as I can remember from last year.

For me, my music, even if considered experimental is often not that original and I commonly like music that references earlier eras. That can be done in a unique way, but I do care more about the "sound" that pleases my ears, and I have no problem with retro if done well and drawing on styles and influenced by music I like.... Anyway, putting my preferences and boorish attitudes aside.... I actually can think of some very unique to my collection sounding/seeming albums from past years, but none from this year is striking me as particularly relevant to the issue.

Cheers,
Greg (aka Logan of Run)

Listen to this Greek trio. Indeed, it could be categorised as Neo Prog, but what Neo Prog!

Floating Worlds – Strange Kid, from "Skywatcher"

Floating Worlds – Hello From Out There, from "Skywatcher"

Floating Worlds – Extraterrestrial, from "Skywatcher"

Thanks guys. Hope this might help some.

Mike, that Greep album did occur to me. It is one of my top albums of the year and while some of it does sound very black midi-typical (I love black midi and that band has uniqueness) some of it does have its own unique melange, and it certainly does sound uniquely Geordie. Good choice methinks. It's quite an eclectic album. By the, while I know "Holy Holy" has been a popular fave from him, it wasn't one that particularly got me, until now! I love that live video. It all feels so vibrant and great. Such a talented young man and musicians with him. The kids are all right!

This experimental/electronic/noise/Arabic debut album by the duo Pollution Opera will not appeal to everyone, but I find it fascinating.

Another Greek band, yet female-fronted and synth-free this time. The peculiar thing about this suggestion is that although there is nothing particularly novel or different about it, the fact is that it sounds quite original. As I said in the Jupiter Fungus thread, the Athens progressive rock scene is quite vibrant these days...

In terms of unique sounds I had many a Forrest Gump moment (been there, done/seen that) in my 40+ years of listening to music. When I hear "unique" I do not immediately think of avant/experimental, but something "really" unique. The Greep album qualifies for me since while it sound much like black midi in some aspects, it really goes much further than expected into the Brazilian sound.

Another one I found interesting, probably not that unique in general but since I haven't explored it that much, is the "Prog Americana" vibe here:

It's one of those albums that needs to be heard from start to finish as it was intended. Not for everyone I suppose.. I got a "Krautrock, Grails, Killing Joke" feel from it overall. All stuff I really like on most days.  I just hope they dont rely on AI for some of the scapes and drones. If it does, well it's a cool listen anyhow. But I'm really not happy about AI stepping into the musical arena.

Since I love Can, Krautrock and Post-Rock I actually was familiar with the same already but had not checked it out yet. Mein gott, instant bliss! Wow. I wasn't thinking of recommendations for me really here, but this is amazing and will want to be checking out lots. By the way, I have noticed that with a lot of my favourite music, Krautrock is an influence. And yes, this wants to be played right through. Topic more than worth it just for this alone and so many other recs her too. Bliss. Thanks so much.

you might find stuff like Jane Remover, death's dynamic shroud, underscores, Fire-Toolz, glass beach, Weatherday etc fascinating, this is a very hip sound with the RYM kids last coupla years. I don't get it but there's one exception (and his https://open.spotify.com/album/6OBVw8raHp7vIeyIPnsQjt" rel="nofollow - next album is even better ):

Yeah loved them too. "Since I love Can, Krautrock and Post-Rock" you might enjoy Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin. Both Ghosted from 2022 and Ghosted II from this year scrath a similar itch (it typically works best as a full album listen, but I love all the parts). Gentler and far less rockin' than YooDoo Right!, but so were often Can themselves:

Molly Lewis is a siffleur (whistler) who has opened as support for Weyes Blood several times . This is from her 2024 debut album, but she has released two long EP's (with 12 songs in total) prior to it:

I got to add this 2021 video by her, as I find very enchanting, charming and fun:

^I payed most attention to "Looking for pretty unique sounding albums of 2024". I had a feeling the Weyes Blood-link would help:)

While I might prefer Ævestaden by themselves, their recent collaboration album with Kanaan "Langt, Langt Vekk" is still great.

^ I like Ævestaden too, and like that.

While I made this topic with Pedro in mind hoping to help him find something because he is "down" on lots of stuff, and I'd rather be "up" on lots of stuff (I could say that I'm done for what I am up for), hopefully this is a little treasure trove for various people into various musical idioms.

I love lots of retro sounds and I don't need music to be very innovative and unique to love and respect it. Some is, some isn't. I do like experimentation often enough... So much of my favourite modern music draws on styles of the past. almost like homage to it (love lots of Krautrock inspired music, Neo-Psych, some Space Rock Revival, ones that draw on old lounge-y sounds and the groovy 60s etc.) I'm not as keen on the retro Symph bands commonly that are so well-liked by many at PA.

...

Hi,

I'm not "down" on lots of stuff ... still listening, but I have to admit that the excitement that we felt 50 years ago when we heard a LP of unknown music, was much more memorable than a lot of stuff listed that I am hearing. I end up passing a lot of things ... specially in the list is another high school drummer in a "progressive" band ... somehow that is just weird in my mind ... a band that has a time keeper, because they can't play with each other without a time keeper ... and all it shows in my book is how much the whole thing is limited ... and the excitement is gone.

There is enough out there, but I am finding the cross cultural mixes much more exciting than those that are considered "prog-rock" or "progressive" ... at least you know that some folks are trying hard to express themselves beyond an idea that has lost its appeal ... not just to me!

Heck, I'm listening to the stuff listed on this thread ... much more entertaining than the top 25 in my book, when you get the chance to hear some way out there stuff ... which is what I love the most these days, but I miss the excitement of the early days ... it feels like the bad DJ's 50 years ago, that went onto the FM radio and played the "same old stuff" ... almost completely ignoring the new, and extended, stuff.

Maybe I wish the "new stuff" (really new, not the same old stuff) was separated from all the rest ... so we know there is a difference, instead of having to comb through 10 bands, to find one to listen to quite a bit more!

^^ ^ I can get down for that. :) I don't really care much about what is considered to be Prog-rock or progressive except for this site purposes. Most of the modern albums I love are not in Prog Archives, and while they might be seen as progressive (adjective), they are not so likely to be seen as Progressive Rock (genre). I like art music, art films... two of my favourite albums in PA from 2024 are Godspeed You! Black Emperor's "No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead" and The Smile's Wall of Eyes, and three of my favourites not in PA are by female singers, Beth Gibbons' Lives Outgrown, Julia Holter's Something in the Room She Moves and St. Vincent's All Born Screaming. And I really like Kimbanourke's Binjari amongst many others

One way to find unique and exciting new music is to listen to the kinds of genres/ styles one might not be that accustomed to.

these are my top albums for this year so far (not well ordered). https://awesomeprog.com/release-polls/ap/aoty-2024/vote" rel="nofollow - https://awesomeprog.com/release-polls/ap/aoty-2024/vote

My top 4 would probably be

Olivia Block - The Mountains Pass (experimental acoustic improv)
Kaatayra - Inpariquipe (Brazilian ambient folk metal(?))
Janel Leppin Ensemble Volcanic Ash - To March Is To Love (avant chamber jazz)
Avalanche Kaito - Talitakum (Belgian/Burkina Faso avant rock, afro jazz, post punk trio)

All on bandcamp

Lampião Rei - Papangu
Ive not bought many lps this year, certainly of 'new' music. Out of those that i did, this sounds the most diverse and eclectic and fresh to me. Quite a few 2024 lps i invested in, whilst very enjoyable and satisfying to listen to, were not very original (much more 'retro' and re-treading the already fairly well-worn boards)
