Interactive Poll: The Return - Lesser Known Prog 2010-2019

We haven’t had one in a while since interest had waned, but let’s go with a prog poll to try to regain some interest.

Tracks should be from artists in the Prog Archives database from albums released from 2010 through 2019. Albums should have 50 or fewer ratings.

To help jog your memories, I ran a query for the top 250 albums from 2010 to 2019 with 1 to 50 ratings.

https://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=&syears=2019&syears=2018&syears=2017&syears=2016&syears=2015&syears=2014&syears=2013&syears=2012&syears=2011&syears=2010&scountries=&sminratings=1&smaxratings=50&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=250&x=41&y=7#list" rel="nofollow - Link

1. Post one track at a time. You can suggest more than one track but give others an opportunity to post suggestions. As tracks are posted, I’ll add them to the poll and to the playlist if there is a YouTube video. When you post a suggestion, type out the artist name, title track, and year. Because of permissions varying by region, some videos may not appear for everyone and we may need to look for alternatives.

2. This is a poll for lesser know prog tracks from 2010–2019. See guidelines above.

3. This is meant to bring attention to prog you like that might not be so well know, so include a YouTube video or link with your post. If not, no one will be able to listen to it. Add as much or as little information about the artist as you like.

4. Listen and discuss as the poll is being populated and as suggestions are made.

5. When the poll is full (25 tracks), we can begin voting for your favorites. Try to listen to as many of the suggested tracks as you can before voting. I’ll have a playlist included with this post.

6. Multiple votes will be allowed, so you can vote for more than one track. Don’t vote for a track more than once. Typically, we ask voting to be limited to three votes, but I can’t stop you if you select more than three. Don’t vote for your own suggestion. We already know that each track is well liked by at least one person.

7. After voting, post a list of the songs that you voted for. Leave a comment if you want about why you voted for them and give any honorable mentions.

8. Keep all your comments polite and non-personal.  It's the music we're voting on, not the members.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.  Everyone is invited.

I’ll open the poll by suggesting a track from The Mercury Tree’s 2014 album Countenance.

The Mercury Tree - Otoliths (2014)

Only 26 ratings on PA, Countenance is the third album by The Mercury Tree, and has long by my favorite by them. Their most recent release in 2023, Self Similar, with only 30 ratings may be my favorite now.

One thing about Zwoyld. When suggested for inclusion, they were presented as "Zwo Yld". I then added it to the database and quite immediately I received a PM from tha band asking to correct the band name to "Zwoyld"

Here the youtube video:

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

^That's a good one. I didn't realize how few ratings it has. I remember that they also had a number of live covers of prog classics I saw on YouTube.

George!!!

How are you??!!!

Thank you very very much for this poll!!!

My candidate:

-------------
Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Lorenzo!!!

Good to "see" you come by. I could be better, but I could be worse. I am healthy and the world keeps turning with plenty of prog and other music to listen to.

How are you?!!? Enjoying fatherhood and I hope you are recovered from when I remember you from last time. Seems like a while ago (and it may very well be).

Thanks for your contribution! (Now and for starting this over 4 years ago!)

I hadn't realised that but then happened upon their version of Roundabout which is excellent.
BTW I note the album hasn't been added to the poll. Any reason?

I hadn't heard of Lyrian before. This track very evokes early King Crimson and Gabriel-era Genesis. Has a nicecflow and pace for 26-minute long track.

Here's another one but don't worry, chances are I do these two and no more.

öOoOoOoOoOo - I Hope You Sleep Well (the song ends at 3:56, the video has a second one following it - there's also a video that only has the first one but that sounds worse)

I only read it, I don't say it. Tongue
I read somewhere that the band can be called "Chenille", which is French for caterpillar; the öOoOoOoOoOo is just a picture of it.

The others didn't follow my rules, but there's nothing I can do about.

I would like to give people a chance to suggest tracks through the weekend unless it fills up sooner. So, voting can begin once we get to 25 suggestion or starting Monday.

People are welcome to listen and comment on tracks without voting as well. Discussion is welcome.

So far, I enjoy The Mercury Tree song - was this before their microtonal songs or just a one off standard tonal tune? And I like the bunch of ooo's tune.

kind of a Zeuhl meets progressive metal
one of the best albums i heard in 2019 Tongue

^I like it but Zeuhl meets progressive metal would be how I would describe. I guess maybe because added "kind of".

Added the recent tracks to the Playlist on the first page but won't be able to add to the poll until tonight.

On The Mercury Tree, it's before they went all out on the microtonal. They collaborated on a microtonal album with Cryptic Ruse on a project called Cryptic Tree in 2018, and then in 2019 released Spidersmilk on which all the music was written in 17EOD.

One more from me.

The Fierce and the Dead - Truck

From their third album The Euphoric (2018). 18 ratings on PA. They were all instrumental through this album and then added vocals with their fourth album, News from the Invisible World, released last year.

From 2019. Virgil Donati - Ruination

I'm glad the IP are back. Thanks George! Smile

It was a good occasion to revisit my AOTY lists and I was surprised to find this album so low on my 2015 list. It would get the second place now (the album from La Coscienza di Zeno is still my favourite though).

Hooffoot - Take Five, Seven, Six, Eight and Nine (28 ratings)

Octopus-4 updated his post to include a playing video of the entire album 200 000 Zwoyld. For the poll, I picked one of the tracks I liked - the third track Chaä. He's welcome to let me know if he would rather have another one listed.

This is meant to be fun and informative. Sharing a favorite or two or three with the rest of the forum.

Thanks to everyone who suggested a track. Voting can begin. Commenting is welcome. Take time to listen to all or even a few tracks. No rush on voting.

There are two slots available if anyone wants to suggest a track. .

Late to the party, but couldn't decide on what to add early on, then came down with COVID. These are the first two tracks i thought of, but I was concerned because I have shared them before in my own topics (kinds of very "Logan" music). If two are okay from me now to fill this up, I would like to go with one from Sundfor and one from Oneohtrix Point Never.

Shared this before in another topic and George even responded approvingly. This was one of last summer's favourites for me to play in the car:

Oneohtrix Point Never "Freaky Eyes" off Garden of Delete (2015). The album has 5 ratings at PA and is included in Progressive Electronic.

My other choice if both accepted will be the wonderful and lovely Susanne Sundfør with a choice from her 2015 album Ten Love Songs. It has 23 ratings at PA and she is included in Crossover Prog. I adore this, and would sooner call this Art Pop than Prog; however, the two do overlap (especially with Kate Bush in PA). :)

Susanne Sundfør "Silencer" (Ten Love Songs)

So both from 2015 and neither are what many would expect from prog per se and both I have shared in topics before.

Thanks to for doing this George, and good to see you back in these Lorenzo (maybe baby needed a little time to rest and be burped; I mean the series).

I did not take the time to be as attentive in full as I often am, especially as I joined in late, and lacked those multiple spins over time that can reveal more depth and intrigue to the music. Some music needs some time to click if outside one's wheelhouse, I find. I chose from those that appealed on first listen.

I knew four of these very well, and much as I like those and would have voted for those too if not going with the traditional three votes, I opted to favour those I lacked familiarity with for my votes (a common practice with some of the regulars in these Interactive polls).

Below are the four I knew well. That was a great Zwoyld pick off what is, at least have found to be, a great album. Le Silo has been a very serious fave of mine for the album that the track represents. And Aranis has been one of my very favourite bands.

Zwoyld - Chaä
Le Silo - Matsaman
Akt - Di Vento
Aranis - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Six stood out for me from those I didn't know or at least had heard much less. I do recall Kenta Shimakawa's Oiseau, and I know I have heard Moulettes before.

Rêverie - Stradis dismintiadis (this was a nice discovery for me)
Lyrian - Three One-Eyed Gods (this did make me smile and laugh)
Kenta Shimakawa - Oiseau (this is very familiar)
Moulettes - Circle Song (think I might have heard one before)
SONAR - Critical Mass
Hooffoot - Take Five, Seven, Six, Eight and Nine

Of those six I have opted to go with the Reverie (could have been a auto-vote but I did take the time to check out all first), Lyrian and Moulettes. Lots of great for me music in the poll.

Really love these lists that focus on decades. And I like the crterion of less ratings.

I added Greg's suggestions to the poll so we have a good range of 25 tracks across different subgenres from around the world.

I voted Aranis, Akt, and Hooffoot. I could have voted for a few others as well.

This was an enjoyable mix. I played this while I worked this week, selecting from the ones new to me, which were most. Had only heard the Marco Minnemann, Tin Spirits, SONAR, and Oneohtrix Point Never tracks before. But first time seeing the Minnemann playthrough video and the live SONAR.

Thanks again for everyone contributing. No rush for voting. I know it takes time to listen.

If you just happen to be reading this but did not suggest a track, you can listen to the playlist of all the tracks on the first page to check out the music. There's a wide range covering many if the subgenres on this site. Give a lesser known artist a try.

I know I should have taken more time on the playlist but sometimes enthusiasm does get the better of me, I'm not always the most patient of people, and I was confident with my choices. I had started listening to some of the playlist beforehand, some were not my bag, and did know a number of choices very well. Thanks for putting this together and the commentary, George. I love these series, the warmth that comes through from participants quite often, and how we come together as friends and comrades to listen to each other's music and comment on what connects with us.
