Start with "Warrior at the Edge of Time" (if you can get it). If not, try "Hall of the Mountain Grill" or "Quark, Strangeness and Charm". And if you want to get a feeling of how they are live, try "Space Ritual", "Live Chronicles", "Live 79" or "This is Hawkwid - Don't Panic", to name but a few of their many live albums.

Oh, and definitely "Electric Teepee" and "Alien 4" too.

I'd recommend "Hall of the Mountain Grill" as the starting point.  It's the one most fitting the classic progressive rock mold.

"Warrior at the Edge of Time" is probably next best.  "Levitation" is good, but has some weaker moments.  "Quark Strangeness and Charm" is also good, but can be hard to get into at first.  A different leader singer is featured on that one (Robert Calvert, instead of guitarist Dave Brock).  Personally, I like Brock's style much better.

^ But Levitation is much easier to get into!

I prefer Calvert to Brock (also love his solo albums, especially the first two). He only sang on 4 albums though: "Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music", "Quark, Strangeness and Charm", "PXR 5" and "25 Years On", also on the "Sonic Assassins" EP (which is contained on a sampler ("Mighty Hawkwind Classics  1980-1985"; it contains the 4 EPs "Hawkwind Zoo", "Motorhead", "The Earth Ritual Preview" and "Sonic Assassins", so it is not really a sampler, more a re-issue). I especially love "Steppenwolf" from the "Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music" album.

I would say try "Hall of the Mountain Grill" but "Space Ritual" is something that everyone needs to hear. That album will get your blood pumping!

id recommend to stick with pink floyd and discover some things like Ash Ra Tempel (if u like ummagumma and meddle and saucerful of secrets (the song) kinda pink floyd) but if its the piper at the gates of dawn u like. then any early hawkwind can be good. I never really liked hawkwind though, the music is not mature, and the guitars sound like grunge. But they did some good stuff

Hawkwind seems to be a strange band to get into listening to.  It was probably the first prog band I really started listening to, as I had been listening to more melodic doom metal and folk metal before then.  Most listeners appear to be pretty one sided with Hawkwind, either they love it or they hate it.  The people that love it seem to each love a different album the best.  Most Hawkwind albums don't stray too far from themselves though, drifting from ambient poetic type moments to hard rocking BLANGA moments (a term that I believe refers to the blasting sound of the bass and drums, more prominent on their earlier albums, "BLANGA, BLANGA, BLANGA," etc.).

From what I've gathered from reviews their live LP "Space Ritual" is usually the best place to start and tell whether you'll like any of their other albums.  I'd probably agree with this, the album captures Hawkwind at their most Hawkwindish.  If you're looking for something a little more accessible (but no less astounding) you could probably go with "Hall of the Mountain Grill", "Levitation", or "Warrior on the Edge of Time".

Like any prog band I would say it's best to start with their earlier albums to get a feel for the core design of the band, then listen to their later stuff to see how they evolved into different sounds.

cheers

"Love in Space" is the live album to the studio album "Alien 4", that's why many tracks from "Alien 4" appear on "Love in Space". Hawkwind had a big stage show for that live tour.
