Subject: 27 "O" List Acts

"Here is sub-zerO, now plain zerO".

I had planned to do just 25, especially as Lewian mentioned disliking seeing more than one option in a space (they are and/or options, so one can vote for one or two votes for both) and I find aesthetically unappealing. That said, I don't treat these as contests and I am more interested in the posts. There you can mention the specific three acts (or more or less) that you like and opted to vote for.

If voting, please mention in a post which you voted for. This is multiple choice. I ask that you vote for three, or more or less, that you enjoy. I suggest not worrying about level of familiarity. While I encourage people to mention what they like from the list IF applicable, I also encourage to mention ones they like that are not in the list. Bonus if it's a fairly obscure name if you can recommend a specific track to check out.

I made a longer list the other day, and here it is.

.O.rang* (see note)
Agnes Obel
Richard O'Brien
October Equus
Of Wondrous Legends (O.W.L.)
Offering
Thee Oh Sees** (see note)
Oiapok
Oingo Boingo
Oiseaux - Tempete
Oktober
Mike Oldfield
Sally Oldfield*** (see note)
Olive Mess
Angel Olsen
Omega
Oneohtrix Point Never
OOIOO
The Open Window
Opeth
Opus Avantra
Opus-5
Orange Peel
Orchestra Njervudarov
Øresund Space Collective
Organisation
Le Orme
Os Mundi**** (see note)
otay:onii
The Orb
Las Orejas Y La Lengua
Osanna
Ose
Osibisa
Ougenweide
Out of Focus
Ozric Tentacles

* .O.rang (aka 'O' rang) should maybe be included under special characters.

** I would place Thee Oh Sees under T, as "Thee" means "You", not "The", but this is where PA places it. It is not in the poll because I think it should be under T. It would be otherwise because I like it a lot.

*** I actually have not listened to much Sally Oldfield but wanted to include her anyway for others in this long list.

**** Os Mundi is Latin for The World. PA puts it under O, I would put it under M. Unfortunately I missed it for M, but still don;t want to compound mistakes. If there are any mistakes here, please let's just gO with it.

Here are the past polls: https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133567" rel="nofollow - 27 "N" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133557" rel="nofollow - 25 "M" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133546" rel="nofollow - 25 "L" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133533" rel="nofollow - 25 "K" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133437" rel="nofollow - 25 "I and J" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133395" rel="nofollow - 25 "H" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133382" rel="nofollow - 29 "G" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133376" rel="nofollow - 26 "F" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133371" rel="nofollow - 25 "E" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133361" rel="nofollow - 26 "D" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133352" rel="nofollow - 25 "C" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133348" rel="nofollow - 25 "B" List Acts & https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=133346" rel="nofollow - 25 "A" List Acts

I hope others will find acts they like or are interested in from this list and will then mention those, and I hope to hear about other acts. And I hope that will tell me what they don't like from the list. A big name that is missing is Opeth, but that's not something I have listened to in many years and was never that big on it. I tried again from various albums and it was not doing it for me. To each his or her own tastes.

.O.rang, Oiapok and Ozric Tentacles, assuming that Mike Oldfield will get enough votes without my help.

I was tempted to go with both .O.rang and Opiapok myself, but since those already have votes and I want to start with something with no votes, it makes choosing my just three as Oneohtrix Point Never, otay:onii and OOIOO. if going for four, Organisation would get another right now or Las Orejas y La Lengua.

Oneohtrix Point Never is the one of these that I have played the most over the last few months. Garden of Delete (2015) and R Plus Seven (2014) were the first two OPN albums to which I listened. I have a track from each of those albums in the playlist in my signature (the third and fourth choices).

Well, I've only covered ones I like in the poll and know well, forgot One Shot, and including the longer list in my first post would have made the poll too long (and wasn't keen on Opeth when revisiting it, nor do I know Sally Oldfield well). I already wish i had stuck with 25 options.

For the ones from your list that I have not referred to...

Oceansize
OHMA
OK Goodnight
Olive possibly, unless you meant Olive Mess
On the Virg
Oöphoi
The Opium Cartel
Opus III
Orgone
Orion 2.0
Orphaned Land
Osiris
Outer Limits
Overhead
OVRFRWD

Do you have any particular album and track recommendations? I wouldn't say I missed those, that implies that I would have included them had I thought of them, as I am not that familiar with those on the whole. I would not have thought all of those would be up my alley, but we do have a large overlap of tastes. I have heard OMHA before, which was very good as I recall, and had I recalled that I might well have added it. Listening to Oöphoi now, and this is great.

For every other letter, selecting only three favorites has been a struggle. With "O" I only have one stand out favorite, and that is Le Orme

Ose's one off Adonia basically sound like peak-Heldon to me, so a vote for them as well

I really enjoy Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn (for the most parts), so Mike Oldfield gets my third and last vote

If his was my list of "O" favorites, I would have included (the Swedish based) Okay Temiz amazing Oriental Wind-project - and seeing you included Ø in O: Nils Økland

^ I like the Tentacles, but I'm not that big on Ozrics either, to be honest. 20 years ago I was more into them.

I loved the Oriental Wind/Okay Temiz album (should listen again, been quite some years). I should have included that here as Oriental Wind. I remember thinking, should that be under Okay Temiz or Oriental Wind? I then forgot about it altogether. I think I checked out Nils Økland before, I will again. PA puts ØRESUND SPACE COLLECTIVE under O, and often I will follow them, but not always. Otherwise Thee Oh Sees would be in this poll and not T.

No, say, Porcupine Tree as it's not one I ever really got into.   Hard enough to choose anyway as I feel like there is so much potential P that I'm practically drowning in it (P). No doubt I will be leaving off various popular Ps, and I don't want to just stick with what is in PA.

Where is/are Ozric Tentacles ?
+ Martin Orford

Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: September 11 2024 at 17:21
^ Due to the limits of space, only 25 options max are available for polls here, but I have 27, I doubled-up two of the 25 poll options. It is alphabetically listed mostly so Ozric Tentacles is right at the end as "Osibisa and/or Ozric Tentacles". It's inelegant to be sure. If one liked both of those and chose both, the idea is to vote twice and list both, if just one of the two is chosen, vote once and list that. The other that is doubled if any missed it when browsing through the poll options is otay:onii and/or the Orb (should have been The Orb with a big fat T, and there's one where I did not do both in alphabetical order).

I don't know if you're suggesting that I should have mentioned Martin Orford or if you're just mentioning it as one of your favourites which is something I do indeed encourage. While I would assume the latter as I have not exactly shown myself to be much of a Neo-Prog guy, I actually have not listened to his solo music. Whether one would expect me to like it or not, I would be up to listening to some new-to-me music (and others might be too) if anybody wants to share some choice tracks of acts not in the list.    I love it when topics become little listening rooms (where people get exposed to some new-to-them music and comment on it, especially if they enjoy the music).

Thanks, Richard. While I do find his vocals too AORish (reminiscent to me of a very AORish take on Genesis) and the cheap and thin sounding keys remind me of some inexpensive Karoake knock-offs from South-East Asia where they take popular songs and present cheesy keyboard instrumentals to sing along with, I do appreciate the song and find it quite lovely.
