Subject: First 9 studio albums: Led Zeppelin & Rush

Just a quickie poll. I was going to include some lives but then decided against it. One might argue that Coda does not belong, but I am including it. So with that for nine Led Zep studio albums, I also just wanted to cover the first nine studio albums by Rush. This is not multiple votes. Choose one that you like from the poll.
I'm feeling Houses of the Holy or Physical Graffiti now, and am going with the latter.

Very easy decision for me...
Permanent Waves
Indeed, Rush albums would complete the top 5 here; I simply prefer their music over Zep's...

This is a tough one, I could vote for half of these.

Honestly, I cannot choose one over the others. Depending on the mood I'm in, I could go choose any of them.

I commonly choose based on my current mood, and even then it often feels very arbitrary.

Hemispheres gets my vote today.
The mood could change to something else tomorrow.

I'd imagine here, you're going to find most forum member will chose predominantly Zep or Rush depending on their personal preference as they are very different bands?
As I think I said in another thread recently, I haven't had the urge to listen to any Sabbath, Purple, Heep or Zep for many years now, whereas Rush like Yes and Genesis will always continue to get an airing even though I've also been listening to them for 40+ years.

Farewell to Kings and Physical graffiti are my two favourites here really because they were my first exposure to both bands as a spotty, denim cut-off wearing teenager in the 70's

Not very different bands when one considers early Rush which was heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin. I got into both during my 80s teenage years, but Led Zeppelin is the one that has stayed with me more. That said, I rarely play either these days. And most of what I am into now I discovered or delved into decades later. Many seem more nostalgic than I in terms of still wanting to play the music they liked in their youths, and that is often part because of the associations. I'm more excited bay acts I discovered recently than what I have known for 40 years.
Personal preference of course is what this is about. I generally prefer Led Zeppelin, but I prefer some Rush to Led Zeppelin. I would take Hemispheres over Presence, for instance, and lots of Rush over Coda.

^ It's the other way 'round with me, where Led Zeppelin and Rush completely passed me by in the 1970's & 80's and it's only since joining ProgArchives that I've become a belated fan of both bands.

1-7: Zeppelin's seven first. I haven't sorted out the order yet.
8: A Farewell to Kings

Moving Pictures is on top of my ranking.
4 stars and up: Moving Pictures > Hemispheres > Permanent Waves >= Signals > Houses of the Holy > Caress of Steel > A Farewell to Kings
Note: I am not familiar with some of the LZ albums. LZ III and side one of IV are fine (side two leaves me cold) and Carouselambra is one of my favourite LZ songs.

^^ I am one of the rarities it seems who loves In Through the Out Door, even if it particularly for "Carousulembra". It still does excite me after all these years.
I was biggest on Led Zep while in Grade 9 and 10, and loved to play Zepp, Hendrix, and Cream on my Walkman while walking to school. Now I am feeling nostalgic.

Who doesn't love "All My Love," especially with that nifty synth solo by JPJ!

I recall that some have been surprised with what music you had not been familiar with before joining PA before. If one has been into classic rock, both Led Zeppelin and Rush have been radio staples here for ages. Where I live, I would be bound to hear music by both bands over the years even if I had never got into either. The same friend got me listening to both bands (Rush a year or two later), although I did not get into Rush to the same extent. And then by the 90s I had mostly moved on to other things.

I would pick Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures over the Zep records but I'm also a huge fan of both. I'm surprised I didn't wear out my vinyl copy of Led Zeppelin II or Ac/Dc's If You Want Blood..." record.

I think that's a very good point.... in truth, many of us would like to achieve both, but pressures of time constraint along with the sheer volume of music out there, mean that compromises have to be made.
In short, I'm looking forward to retirement (if I will ever be able to afford to do so), however I think Parkinson's Law will take effect, which states that the amount of music will expand to fill the increased time available!

I agree with first 3 and last 3 which might be interesting and tells you something about which band was progressing and which one was standing still (perhaps). The middle 3 albums are trickier. Rush were in their heaviest and proggiest phase while Led Zep were just at their best. I would just cop out and call it a tie on those albums. As for the poll I voted Moving Pictures as it's one of my top five favourite albums of all time.

Interesting ranking.
HotH> IV?! I disagree here, I think IV is better put together, with no filler (D'yer Ma'ker and The Crunge on HotH).
IV>II - I agree
II>I - kinda, but I enjoy the debut more
I>III - I agree

I've never seen D'yer Ma'ker and The Crunge as 'filler' - but more as interesting experiments in exploring other genres (as they had by exploring & including elements of folk on III) - in this case reggae and funk, which enhance the album IMO in giving it a bit more variety than the previous 4 albums.
HotH is the LZ album I end to play the most (followed by IV).

I considered going with Houses of the Holy. I appreciate eclecticism and like having "D'yer Maker" and "The Crunge". I never considered it filler either, but maybe it was intentionally added to fill up the album for lack of material they really wanted. I don't know the story of the making of the album. Led Zep IV is a great album, and I adore 4 Sticks, particularly for the synths, but I don't like "Rock and Roll". I get more enjoyment out of the B side than the A side. It does seem like more of straightforward rock album than Houses of the Holy. And frankly, I have heard "Stairway to Heaven" too many times.

Nice. I voted for PG, and Hemispheres is my favourite Rush album. Hemispheres, Physical Graffiti and In Through the Out Door have all been my favourite album at one time, or I should say at different times.

Out Door is a great record, I don't care what anyone says. I describe it as a "secret favorite" among some fans.
Presence my personal fave but that's coming from a lifelong Zephead, so...

Some Zep cuts were recorded outside the time-frame of a given album and then added to a later LP. Many things were recorded in Wales or elsewhere. I think part of the issue with some of those tracks is that when songs are recorded at different locations & different times, they sound quite different and don't necessarily go well with, or sound quite right on, the album on which they appear. Zep III has that issue frequently, as does Houses. Whereas Zep II, Presence, ITtOD, sound more unified from cut to cut.

Yeah quite a bit of PG is older stuff that was left off previous albums because they had too much new material for a single album, and not enough for a double.

A Farewell to Kings is the pick. As much as I like Led Zeppelin, Rush is my 3rd favorite rock band after Yes and Genesis. If I was to do a top 5 albums between Rush and LZ only Houses of the Holy would be there from Zeppelin.
I do believe the most talented musician from either band is John Paul Jones.
