Just made my account! So happy to see a website like this in 2024!

Just wanted to say I've always thought Clock Work Angles is the best Rush album, what do you guys think?

Welcome to the club! Hope it's a good ride.

Totally dig Clockwork Angels - one of my favorite Rush albums. They really went out on a high note.

The books are excellent, too ;-)

I’ve tried several times to appreciate Clockwork Angels, but have given up. Same with Power Windows. It’s the late 70s/very early 80s period that works for me….

Welcome to PA. This forum and site is pretty old school. Speaking of old school, Hemispheres is the album by Rush that has meant the most to me.   That said, I would not object to thinking of Clockwork Angels as Rush's best album since the 80s. Rush did have a long period of clunkers for my tastes, but then I haven't been much of a Rush fan since the 80s.

I initially disliked them when I heard All The Worlds A Stage then I liked them about the time of Exit Stage Left (still have the original vinyl) then got bored with them around Power Windows then came back when they dropped the synths (Roll The Bones). Eventually stuck with them. Despite being the most overrated prog band in history (according to Andy Edwards) I generally regard them as one of the innovators of the genre. BTW I like Snakes and Arrows more than Clockwork Angels but there are no real stinkers.

Rush is one of my favorite bands. I've been listening to them since 1974. "Clockwork Angels" is not my favorite Rush album but it is one of the best final albums by a band ever. And that is saying a lot for a band that has 19 studio releases.

Welcome to the forums.

The best period in the career of Rush is from A Farewell to Kings to Signals. I abandoned Rush after the disappointing Presto and the deception that is Roll the Bones. However, Clockwork Angels was a return to form.

Welcome to PA.......Maybe this would fit better under the Rush Appreciation thread. Also your spelling is a bit off on the topic title Thumbs Up. It's Clockwork Angels........Regardless I think the final album by my fav all time band is excellent! There are some excellent songs on it as well production. Also the final song on their final album is about as appropriate as can have ever been planned.

It's not my fav album by Rush but I listen to it often and is easily in my top 10.

I wouldn't say it's their best album, but it was certainly a very strong album to finish their career. Not every band or artist gets to have such a strong last album.

Yep. It's better than Gentle Giant's Civilian although maybe that's not saying a whole lot. I'd say it's better than VDGG's Do Not Disturb (if that is indeed their last) also although again not saying a whole lot.

^I think Civilian was a very good album. Better than 95% of any prog band or artist's final release.

Do Not Disturb is an excellent album imo. I only like Godbluff and Pawn Hearts more. VDGG were kind of a samey sounding band most of the time although i like them.

I still like all these albums just not as much as Clockwork Angels. I never even heard ELP's In the Hot Seat but from what I understand it seems like that's probably one of the worst (if not the worst) final albums by a major prog band.

To be honest I am not sure I understand all the hatred for Calling All Stations. If it wasn't put out by Genesis I doubt everyone would be so hard on it. I'm not saying it's one of their best and it might even be their worst but I guess I just don't feel it's as awful as others think it is.

Well I suppose nothing can really be that bad in truth if it's made by actual musicians especially of the calibre of those on these albums. Both albums represent an artistic low for the respective band and are bankrupt of any decent ideas (I could say 'imo' but hardly anyone is likely to challenge). They are not badly played or badly produced though.

I've never heard of the Clock Work Angles album, although I'm a relative latecomer to the music of Rush, having  only become a fan since joining ProgArchives. Going off at a tangent, these are the eight Rush albums I've managed to acquire on CD so far, with Hemispheres just added yesterday.

I haven't heard In the Hot Seat, but I didn't find Calling all Stations particularly bad. I didn't find it particularly good either, but it does have a pair of songs I enjoy... overall, I guess it's not even their worst album.

I never thought much of Clockwork Angles but I think even less of Clockwork Angels. When I saw the band in 2013 and they devoted half the show to this album I almost walked out. By a good way, their worst ever effort.

I also prefer the late 70's and early 80's material but interestingly the album received 1226 rating votes and garnered 3.93 stars which is better than the previous 9 lps .
So apparently quite a few Rush fans liked it.
