They play a breed a epic / opera-like Progressive metal. Great band, a good album by them is " The Human Equation."

Thanks for the advice, if they are anything like Vanden Plas, Dream Theater or Symphony X then they must be good.

Sure You will like em!!! If Your into prog metal try "Flight of The Migrator" (starring guy's like Bruce Dickinson or Russel Allen form SymphX!), or The awesome Human Equation (has an awesome cast of vocals like James Labire, Mikeal Akerfeldt, Devon Graves or Mike Baker - the best album by Arjen! )

I recommend "Into the Electric Castle". Being a fan of progressive
metal, this album still admittedly took me some time to get into. It's
now one of my most cherished albums.

Ayreon are quite unique ... the best way to get to know them (other than buying ITEC or THE) are the numerous samples that are available on their website.

You cannot go wrong with Ayreon, unless you do not care for the PROG-Metal edge to most of the recordings.

They're OK - not great, but OK. Sort of rock opera-cum-neo-prog-cum-
hard rock - if that description appeals, you will like them.

There's no Neo-Prog ... maybe sound-wise, but songwriting-wise Ayreon is much closer to 70s prog than 80s Neo-Prog, plus the added Metal influences.

I find them a bit spacey too. Like a Prog Metal Hawkwind!

^ Snow Dog: There are some metal bands and albums that I would place in a "Space Metal" category: Ayreon - The Universal Migrator, Stare One - Space Metal, The Gathering - How to Measure a Planet?, Isis - All, ... and many others!

Isis spacey? I always thought of them as post rock gone heavy myself.

There's an epic quality to them which is also common in spacy bands like The Gathering - How to Measure a Planet or Devin Townsend - Biomech ... but I guess in a way you can also call them "Post Metal".

On a similar theme, have you listened to much Neurosis? There's something from Isis in them, definitely. I'm not quite so keen on them but they're interesting in places.
