I absolutely LOVE the 19-min long version from Script's 2CD edition, it is SO much better than the original one.

Also is the original one = the Bsides Themselves one or not?

I know four official (unbootlegged) versions :
B-side of the Market Square Heroes 12"
The Marquee Club December 30th 1982
Reading rock Festival : August 27th 1983
Recital of the script Hammersmith Odeon April 19th 1983

I listened to Grendel for the first time from a tape cassette brought by a friend.  The tape contained two EPs and he told me that they wrere promo records. I think that may be the "original" version. The tape contained also a great version of Three Boats Down From the Candy. Quite psychedelic. I've never found that version anymore. Other songs were Garden Party and another that I don't remember.
I wasn't aware of the 19 minutes version of Grendel of the poll.

Hi PJ,

I don't have the 2CDS version of Script but i suppose this is the same version as their Market Square Heroes single from 1982 Grendel is 17'16" long ?

U were right, all 3 are live versions :

Recital from the script is a 2CD* issued by EMI in 2009, Grendel is 18'54''

This version was also available on the DVD Recital of the script where Grendel is 19'07" (played as a final encore)

And originally on a 2 titles (Grendel+ The Web for a tt of 28') EP video cassette issued by EMI Holland (1984) sort of 'companion' of the Recital of the script original video cassette (issued in 1983). Grendel is 18'7" long ( according to an external source)
I didn't watch this video for almost 20 years so I have no memories of it :-)))

The Reading festival 1983 version and the Marquee club version of 1982 are parts of The Marillion early stages box issued by EMI in 2008 Grendel lengths are respectively 18'07 and 19'54

Yours,
MW

Hi O-4,

I think the 3 boats version you look at is the one issued on the complete Recital from the script issued as a 2CD in 2009 by EMI worldwide
version is 7'44" and available for the first time ( not on the original couple of video cassettes (1983 and 1984,
neither on the later DVD version).

yours
MW

Here is the 19 minute Fair Deal Studios version

Been a long time since I heard the other in full,  not sure how different they are, but I enjoyed that 19 minute version and will give it a vote.

I went looking for the Fair Deal Studios version on Amazon Music (found it) but came across this oddity.

The title states Grendel (Kareoke Version Originally Performed by Marillion)

Voted for both.

I remember listening to the Fair Deal Studios version and not enjoying it that much. The main problem with it for me is that the crispy 70's style production heard in the original is gone. It's just a tad too polished. Everything is drowned in gallons of 80's gated reverb and that doesn't work in favor of the songwriting at all.

hehe interesting, it's quite the opposite for me - I'm loooving the 80s' sheen on a 19-min Grendel and finding the 70s dull dryness of a 17-min version barely tolerable

long as it's still got the goose pimple section 'let the blood flow' then I'm happy either way! ( I only know the shorter version)
