Why? Nero 7 is Ahead's new flagship product-it has enhanced features for authoring DVDs,making CDs etc. It is a great product. So why am I telling you not to buy it? If you wish to convert your files to MP3 you have to buy a plug in for US$20 !!! Historically,this facility was available free in all previous versions of Nero (you only had to pay for the MP3 Pro encoder).Now they expect you to pay for something that even Microsoft provides free!! Dont touch it with a bargepole!

| Why do you need to use Nero to convert to MP3? Multi frontend + LAME will do it in just the same way. Or even WinLAME, RazorLAME although they're a bit more cumbersome. |

I haven't installed Windows Media Player on this computer (well, it's here because Windows decide that I need it , but I haven't run the wizard), but on the last computer there was no MP3 option, only WMA. Are you sure the MP3 encoders didn't come with the computer you bought? Perhaps Microsoft added it since the last time my family bought a computer.

If you can extract the audio on your computer in any format, there are a hundred options to convert it to MP3, anyway

I think I d/l it from Microsoft's own site.My computer is 3 1/2 yrs old and I'm sure that WMP9 had Mp3 but WMp10,which I upgraded to didnt.

I have had conversation with Customer Services at Nero and they suggest I follow this link to get a free Lame MP3 Encoder: http://www.nero.com/us/How_do This is all too cloak and dagger.Just give us the encoder you fools!

Here's some info on WMP10 (article quote) MP3 support. One of the big complaints in Media Player for Windows XP (MPXP) and Windows Media Player 9 Series was that Microsoft seemed to be pushing their own Windows Media formats over existing rival formats that had already penetrated the market. The big example here is MP3: Microsoft has always allowed users to play back songs encoded in this format but never offered a way for users to rip music in MP3 out of the box; instead you would have to purchase a $9.99 plug-in, from one of a few partners, which added this capability. Meanwhile, every other music player on the planet supports this functionality out of the box Well, in WMP 10 the wait is
finally over, though it has sort of a anticlimactic ring to it: You can

Yes, MP3 ripping is standard with Microsoft WMP 10. If any of you don't fancy installing WMP 10 then there are a number of freeware and shareware alternatives (e.g. type free MP3 ripper into your favourite search engine). A friend of mine prefers to use RealPlayer, and the couple of times I've used it myself it seems fine. But I'm happy enough to stick with WMP 10. The MP3 standard does not support gapless playback by nature (unless you rip an album as one long single MP3 file) but apparently the LAME MP3 encoder enables MP3 files to be ripped so that firmware in some models of players can remove the gaps: for example, see the following thread for information on how the open source Rockbox firmware plus LAME encoder can be used to create gapless playback of MP3 files on iRiver H1xx players: http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=31543&highlight=gapless - http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=31543&highli ght=gapless Oh, and by the way, unlike MP3, the Ogg Vorbis standard does support gapless tracks inherently.
