Subject: Our 1960 to 2024 lists: One track per year and act

One need not cover 1960 to 2024, but whatever years you want to cover. Please try to only cover one track/song per act for more variety.

Another list topic from me with the focus on years and tracks. My list covers many choices that I have covered in other topics and represents music that I have been very likely to revisit, re-visit and various discoveries over the past five years. I feel this is very representative of me and where I am currently despite missing many of my favourites (like Weyes Blood, VdGG, Wyatt, lots of jazz etc.)

My approach was to list one track off an album per year for every year from 1960 to 2024, and I decided to only include a band/artist name once. That said, I have Beth Gibbons twice, once for a song under Portishead song and once for one under her name. I think this is fine.

This is a not a very ambitious project for me because I have done other lists covering these years (did series covering five year periods before and I have wanted to cover the predictable from me here), but I would like to see what others come up with for these years preferably with just one track per act. One need not cover all these years in one post or cover all of them.

My list, I expect various others would have a greater diversity of styles and moods...

A playlist of my choices:

Love to see other people's choices, and to see how many appreciate music across all of these decades (can cover other decades too).

Some of us already did some very ambitious lists in this https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=130924" rel="nofollow - CLICK and other topics.

I added countries to my list because some seem very interested in such things. I would have liked to do styles but thought that might be too cluttered.

Please comment on some of what you like from other people's lists as well as hopefully coming up with your own lists. And if you think post-1979 is poor (or maybe just my examples), well, feel free to discuss that.

I've done similar topics but never this that I recall (participants doing one track per year and one artist per list covering decades).   I did do a series of one track per five years and a decade based list. Maybe I forgot (would not put it past me) or someone else had the same idea. Of course the more lists one makes the easier to refine and adapt if covering similar ground. I really liked the one in PA and out of PA albums topic as well as the five year series.

I'm working on a youtube thing, need better equipment, just testing for now, where I do some lists and talk about the particular music. I link to the official uploads. I won't share it if it never comes together well, which it probably won't. Would work better with two people (I think preferably with quite different music interests) where we have listened to and talk about each others likes (including albums of the year etc.). I can think of some good PA member pairings for such talks, but none involve me.

I made a youtube playlist of your choices, although I could not find all of them.

Lots of ones I loved there, and some great for me discoveries (and ones I had pretty much forgotten). I feel like your tastes so intersect and overlap with both my and Gryumpyprogfan's tastes (you even got me liking Romantic Warrior!). That's a cool thing with the lists for me is comparing the music (and a reason I like tracks is because it becomes easier to compare and to get more specific). As for one I knew but had rather forgotten and LOVED again: David Bowie - Art Decade.

I did not have time to listen in full, not nearly, to the playlist even for the ones I was not so familiar with, but...

New possibly to me that I loved:
Stubbs - The Prime Ultimate
Master Cylinder - Hobb & Geeb
Nine Inch Nails - La Mer
M83 - Night (adore this)
Sevish - Same Old

{The Boards of Canada, Cardiacs, and Cocteau Twins are the act that have most obsessed my ears over years and still do}

By the way, I really started exploring the music at PA by going through the MP3 and then streaming player, and while I love to listen to albums, tracks have been a fantastic means of discovery to me. and I do enjoy returning to albums to choose favourites and sometimes discovering more albums to check out and then songs. These kinds of topics go to show me (it should need showing) just how vibrant and excellent music has been for many decades, and barring some catastrophe, will continue to be. Thanks so much, Mira. And Lewian, hopefully at some time we will get a list from you (maybe built up over time).

Incidentally, in case anyone might consider otherwise, or wonder, the playlists, including the one I made of yours, are mostly for my enjoyment and ease. I would not expect others to make use of these in this kind of topic. It makes it easier for me to check out other people's music and to re-visit ones I suggest. I share it here just in case any one, other than myself, might be at all interested in vising or re-visiting any of the music. I got the making my own cassettes bug as a teen, and got it again when Geo started making youtube playlists for the interactive polls (which made listening and re-visiting so much easier for me).

Wow, thank you so much! I feel flattered
I see I made an error actually; for 1990 I meant to write down Eternal Wheel by Ozric Tentacles but I accidentally wrote down the name of the album it's on... which incidentally is also the name of a track on it which I also really like, but not as much as this one Wink:

As for the songs that aren't on YouTube, I was able to track down http://tatsuyayoshidarisatakeda.bandcamp.com/track/ibl" rel="nofollow - IBL by Tatsuya Yoshida & Risa Takeda and http://thesciencegroup.bandcamp.com/track/timelines-timeline-5" rel="nofollow - Timeline 5 by The Science Group on Bandcamp. http://amarxe.bandcamp.com/track/egos-explode" rel="nofollow - Egos Explode by Rascal Reporters is technically on there as well but it's no longer available for public listening, and Wendy Carlos's Poem For Bali sadly doesn't seem to exist on the internet in any form.

There's a very crowded field of candidates for my favourite Bowie song but Art Decade always ends up coming out on top in spite of how atypical a song it is in his oeuvre; something about it just spells "otherworldly experience" more so than most musical works I've heard in my life and takes me to strange places emotionally when I listen to it.

^ Thanks for those. With Ozric Tentacles the only one I had remembered was the "Erpland" title track (discovered that through PA's old, long gone mp3 service). I will check those out to which you linked. I know music/albums by all of those acts. As for Wendy Carlos, I have tried to track down music of hers online before with difficulty, like Beauty in the Beast. Wonderful artist.

Nice, Mira, thanks you so much, and for the playlist too -- those take a while to make, but not as long as a list. With not repeating acts, coming up with multiple lists can be challenging for certain years, and of course we don't necessarily end up with our favourites from the artists because we juggle those with others. I will do one more at some time, but it does get harder and I might have to research to discover some new-to-me things. I want my list to reflect on what I currently am into which may not be what I was into several years ago when I was still a vivacious strapping young 40-something year old lad. ;)

Listening to that Morricone now, as despite having many of his albums, I don;t have that one. Of course I really like it (sure I have heard it before).

Without listening now, of the others that I know, remember and really like (I do have the Miles Davis and Yugen albums too but would have to refresh my memory):

1967: H.P. Lovecraft - The White Ship (love this and this could easily have been a pick of mine. If I do another it probably will be.)
1970: Magma - Aïna (my fave Magma album and one of my fave Magma pieces)
1971: Egg - Long Piece No. 3 (Part 2) (I revisited this recently after some years due to a topic on Egg at PA)
1973: Henry Cow - Amygdala (love it!)
1974: Gentle Giant - No God's a Man (while I have returned to early Giant more, this has always been one of my favourite GG songs)
1976: Area - Gerontocrazia (have the album, did refresh my memory, wonderful)
1999: Mr. Bungle - The Air-Conditioned Nightmare (that and Pink Cigarette are my fave Bungle songs!)
2019: Uboa - The Origin Of My Depression (I love Uboa, one of my faves. Glad I'm not the only Xandra fan here)

Procrastinating, so another. For most of these years I have many choices to choose from while not duplicating any of the acts I already covered in past lists, but for some it is very thin indeed. I was remided of the wonderful Arthur Lyman album, and I had checked out some of that James Holden album before, but wow, that was a nice listen. I guess for most of us unless we have kept track of some of our lists, even coming up with one could be very time-consuming.

Mira, I scanned your youtube playlist and listened to quite a bit of it in full.

That Eric Dolphy is fantastic! I had not heard it before that I recall. And I REALLY loved that Donald Byrd. The only album of his in my collection is Electric Byrd where he sort of jumped on the Bitches Brew bandwagon (I suggested it directly to the JRF team many years ago).

Of course Morricone I know and love. As said, The White Ship is a personal favourite song of mine from the 60s. JA and Zappa I know and like. I adore that Magma track (to me Magma never got better than its debut). Egg is great. Like that Davis album. Amygdala is one of very favourites from the Cow. That's a favourite Gentle Giant song of mine. Enjoy the Eno, love the Area. I really love that Vangelis track! Top Vangelis! Had heard but not for years.

I won't keep commenting on most cause it lacks substance, but I loved hearing Kenji Kawai! I have seen Ghost in the Shell over twenty year ago, and that music is wonderful. Underworld is a great discovery for me. As said, that is a fave Bungle of mine. Silent Hill gets me going. I knew and liked the album The Mantle album a lot.

Love Rubén D'Hers' Anna Y Las Palmas. Really like Farmers Market. That Tigran Hamasyan is so wonderful (really, reall love that). Schooldazed makes me feel good. I have listened to that Uboa considerable times as she is one of my fave modern artists. Matt Stober's Brook I really like and is very reminiscent in part of a a mix of things (they will all come to mind later hopefully). Love the Artadi song. And I think my eldest child has played that last song for me.

Great stuff. Thanks for the double-list. Hope some others too might give this a go, but I know it is time-consuming to put together, especially if one has not made many prior lists.

https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=132122&KW=&PID=6112449#6112449" rel="nofollow - This series CLICK I made last year helped me with these lists and then I did another series of my choices for ones in and out of PA with more choices. And there are many different choices in my lists here not there. I enjoy refining and re-defining lists and also my interests shift and I like to cover that which most interests me now.

Continuing with the idea of one track per act and not repeating the names of past acts from past lists of mine in this topic, here is my last. For years, such as 1967-1982, I am into such a variety that it would be quite easy to continue, but for other years the pickings get scarce and I would have to research and expose myself to more music. A number of things here are quite new to me (which is great as this has helped me to discover some great-for-me new music).

Anyway, an enjoyable exercise for me to explore music, but it does get time-consuming. Happy that Mira came up with a couple of lists but I would not expect others to -- helps that Mira had an excellent series of lists before, I expect. That album series in Top IO and lists led me in part to exploring more of my own lists.

I guess this is my sixth (one tries not repeat acts in each list or across lists, which does make it more challenging.  For me it took quite bit of research and listening outside of the mid 60s to mid 80s to compile this (I use rateyourmusic as a guide).  I have found some great for me music in preparing lists,

1960: George Russell and His Orchestra featuring Bill Evans "Dimensions" (Jazz in the Space Age)
1961: The Moontrekkers "Night of the Vampire" (Night of the Vampire / Melodie D'Amore)
1962: Dick Dale and The Del-Tones "Miserlou Twist" (Surfer's Choice)
1963: The Lively Ones "Surf Rider' (Surf Rider)
1964: 1964: Herbie Hancock "The Egg" (Empyrean Isles)
1965: Pete La Roca "Malaguena" (Basra)
1966: Nancy Sinatra "Bang, Bang" (How Does That Grab You?)
1967: Jefferson Airplane "White Rabbit" (Surrealistic Pillow)
1968: Lily & Maria "Everybody Knows" (Lily and Maria)
1969: The Pentangle "Hunting Song" (Basket of Light)
1970: Linda Perhacs "Parallelograms" (Parallelograms)
1971: Earth & Fire "Song of the Marching Children" (Song of the Marching Children)
1972: Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes "Un jour... la mort" (Paix)
1973: Faust "Krautrock" (Faust IV)
1974: Zao "Isis" (Osiris)
1975: NEU! "Isi" (NEU! '75)
1976: Ragnarök "Vattenpussar" (Ragnarök)
1977: Anna Själv Tredje "Tusen år & sju timmar" (Tussilago Fanfara)
1978: Haruomi Hosono & Tadanori Yokoo "Madam Consul General of Madras" (Cochin Moon)
1979: Univers Zéro "Jack the Ripper" (Hérésie)
1980: Rahmann "Leïla" (Rahmann)
