Topic: Interactive 2024 Thus Far PollPosted By: Logan
Subject: Interactive 2024 Thus Far Poll
Date Posted: May 29 2024 at 15:58
I skipped the Experimental Interactive Poll because I was not satisfied with the ones I narrowed it down to and thought my choices might meet not be that welcome.
I only have about ten albums from this year so far that I am very keen on.
The idea is to post various tracks that you like from this year and then from those to choose one, two, or three, depending on participation to nominate. Then when the time comes, we will listen to the selections and choose three to vote for (rules will depend on numbers of participants and nominations). Shout out to Lorenzo who came up with the first one of these Interactive Polls, hope all is well. By the way, i think it's fine if different people choose different tracks from the same albums.
I will start with something from my number one album of the year, which was only released on May, 17, 2024.
Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" off Lives Outgrown
And one I shared in another topic of mine:
Eunuch "Gnome and Fortune" off Harbour Century released on April 5th. (warning, if listening in public place, it has the word "fu**ing")
Prog and Non-Prog, and anywhere in between, is acceptable, but please try to keep your submissions on the shorter side (say under 10 minutes). Thanks.
Here are the submissions. All are in the poll. Note that 25 had a too early vote (for the t completing the SO FAR); a reason to avoid juvenile humour.
Official Nominees - Expected Listening and Voting (please try to listen to these 10 and vote for two or three)
1. Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" 2. Still House Plants "M M M" 3. IDLES "Jungle" 4. Orange Blossom "Mawj" 5. Barbara Morgenstern "Die Liebe zur Sache" 6. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum "Burn Into Light" 7. Sgàile "Ptarmigans Cry" 8. Melvins "She's Got Weird Arms" 9. The Decemberists "Burial Ground" 10. Ihsahn - The Distance Between Us
------------------
Bonus Selections #1 - Optional (for number two picks as nominations - can vote for up to two of these "bonus" choices)
11. Eunuchs "Gnome and Fortune" 12. Solar "Blues" 13. Ghost Funk Orchestra "Nova" 14. Aquaserge "Sommets" 15. Adult Jazz "Marquee" 16. Bat For Lashes "The Dream of Delphi" 17. Caligula's Horse "Stormchaser"
------------------------------------
Bonus Selections #2 - Optional (for those third suggestions - can vote for one of these bonuses)
18: Julia Holter "Something in the Room She Moves" 19. Torres "Collect" OR William Shatner "Elephants and Termites" (not in youtube playlist) 20. DarWin "Be That Man"
------------------------------------
Bonus Selections #3 - Optional (for those fourth indidividual suggestions - can vote for one of these bonuses)
21. St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" 22. Blackbriar "Moonflower" 23. Mdou Moctar "Imouhar"
-------------------------------------
Bonus Selections #4 and #5 - Optional (the others, fifth or sixth mentions -- mention your fave of these bonuses in a post if desired)
24: Tapir! "Mountain Song" OR Ghost Funk Orchestra "Totality..." OR Leprous "Atonement" (can vote for one) 25. The Smile "Bending Hectic" OR The Decemberists "Joan in the Garden"
Here is the youtube playlist (minus Shat):
And here is Shatner:
---------------------------------------------
So we are ready to vote. Please list all votes in a post and do not vote for any of your own choices. For the two last options, you can vote for one of the selections in each space (24th and 25th option). Please. again, list in your post that for which you voted. if voting for bonuses, please try to listen to the selections in the sections you vote for before voting.
Thanks to all who participated, and to any who check out any of the music here. :bowing emoticon:

I'll nominate 'M M M' by Still House Plants - https://stillhouseplants.bandcamp.com/track/m-m-m" rel="nofollow - https://stillhouseplants.bandcamp.com/track/m-m-m
This is pretty far from prog, I'll suggest 'Blues' by Solar - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-m3_gQrW5k" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-m3_gQrW5k
And lastly 'Collect' by Torres - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP9kh_F3F54" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP9kh_F3F54

Will probably be back with more suggestions, but for now: I've been waiting ten years for this one... Or, maybe I should say that the band waited ten years before releasing their fourth album (four albums in their 30 years existence...): Orange Blossom, a French band mixing Middle-Eastern and sometimes latin elements with an addictive electro-rock (sometimes even rubbing the prog beast) released their album Spells From the Drunken Sirens last March.
Orange Blossom - Mawj (from the album Spells From the Drunken Sirens):

Thanks, guys.

And another one from me:
St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" off the album All Born Screaming (released on April 26).
Depending on participation, I probably will wait a couple weeks before putting up nomination. I'm happy in having an active topic where people are suggesting new music. Maybe on Sunday I'll through those that have been mentioned and hopefully make some little comments on the tracks.

Barbara Morgenstern has a new album out (long time fan here, as some know).
Here's Die Liebe zur Sache:
(Note that I have changed the song here as I like this one more; had chosen the other one earlier because I had focuses on the ones that have a video.)

^ Good stuff.
Thanks for all the responses. I hope to put together a playlist, comment and listen to all ere very long.
Here is my favourite track off the first album I became acquainted with music from (pre-release) where the album was released this year.
It's "Bending Hectic" off The Smile's Wall of Eyes, and to me it is fabulous (too others it might be too wonky in part and Radiohead-y)

"Retro" has a negative cotation to some people. For me, it depends on the genre or subgenre.
My next suggestions are retro 60s lounge jazz funk for sure, but it gives off such a cool vibe. I saw Ghost Funk Orchestra open for another band last year with a fun performance. Their 2024 album A Trip to the Moon is a concept album about a woman whose partner leaves to go on a space mission. Throughout the album are clips of Apollo mission transmissions. The first track is from the album and the second is a dub remix of a track.

Thanks all, I have gathered together the suggestions so far[t] in order of participants. I love who we come together in these listening-room type topics. A very positive and worthwhile experience and exploration for me.
EDIT:
An updated list:
Logan Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" Eunuch "Gnome and Fortune" St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" Tapir! "Mountain Song" The Smile "Bending Hectic" Julia Holter "Something in the Room She Moves"
TheGazzardian Still House Plants "M M M" Solar "Blues" Torres "Collect" Blackbriar "Moonflower" Leprous "Atonement"
Lewian Adult Jazz "Marquee" Barbara Morgenstern "Die Liebe zur Sache"
Nogbad_The_Bad Sleepytime Gorilla Museum "Burn Into Light"
Cristi Sgàile "Ptarmigans Cry"
Richardh Melvins "She's Got Weird Arms" Bat For Lashes "The Dream of Delphi"
By the way, I think we should continue to run this for a week or two before putting up the nominations. If various of us only have one nomination, then I would like to place one track per user in the first section of the poll (and maybe say vote for two depending on how many participate) and then have others as bonuses (maybe vote for two more). While the votes themselves aren't of particular interest to me, I do like to clarify, define and refine the method (otherwise it might seem too much like madness, even if there is method to it).
George, thanks for the Amazon playlist. I am working on one for youtube (not all tracks will be present in the playlist due to some restrictions).
I hope we get some more participants. Mila is sadly absent, but now I see she was having issues with topic notifications and had asked about it. I'll try to solve that. For those who might find participating in the process to be to onerous (mentioning and nominating tracks for this year, listening through the choices then voting) feel free to mention tracks anyway, and I might put those in the bonus section. As is sung, "the more we get together, the happier we'll be." And remember, sharing is caring. :)

Here's a suggestions playlist minus The Shat because, as noted, it can be added to it as it is made for children. I alternated between our suggestions. I added "Allergic to Food" as the Melvins choice as I find it quite exciting, but the ultimate choice is up to Richard. EDIT: Now properly changed it to Melvins "She's Got Arms" (was my first fave off the album).
Keep 'em coming, please. Been listening, and great stuff. It's not much of a skill of mine, but I might, and might not, try some commenting on the tracks later. With all this time at PA I feel I should be very adept at describing music and my feelings on music by now, but, oh well.

I haven't had a chance to fully listen to his new album. Funeral for Justice, but wanted to mention Mdou Moctar since he is playing a show near me on Friday and am thinking about going. I have his previous album. He plays psychedelic rock inspired by Tuareg guitar music. He sings in Tamasheq, a variety of the Tuareg language.

"Do it to Julia" (Winston Smith, 1984).
I had thought that someone (Kees...) might have brought up Julia Holter's Something in the Room She Moves by now. She is one of my very favourite artists. This album took me little while longer to love than some of her others, but the title track was one that was easy for me to get into (there is more out-there music on the album and she can have very experimental qualities to her music).

^ It is lovely. She has some very beautiful music across her albums. I first got into her for her album Have You in My Wilderness (2015) and then Aviary (2018). I was once read complaints that she is nothing but a Kate Bush clone, which I thought very unfair and misguided.

I don't think either Bath for Lashes nor Julia Holter are really Kate Bush clones ... they may have done stuff that was clearly influenced by Kate Bush earlier in their career but they were never full on clones and they have been less and less like Kate Bush recently.
I listened to both their recent albums; I liked both, but I don't love either, yet.

It demonstrates a superficial/limited knowledge of these artists. If I just listened to part of this song ("How Long" by Julia Holter) then I might conclude that she is a Nico clone.

I've taken random shuffles of the songs selected and am impressed by the selections and how they work overall. Generally, I like the tracks with the female vocals. My current favorites are Orange Blossom "Mawj" and Solar "Blues". Noth uniquely incorporating global sounds. The Barbara Morgenstern track slowly caught on with me. The underlying instrumentation is wonderful. While I have seen/heard St. Vincent's name a number of times, I don't think I have actually listened to her music that if someone asked me to describe her music, I would not have been able to. I liked her track. Catchy, yet nuanced.
Of the tracks suggested, I was already familiar with SGM and the Smile.
I may comment more later.

So I plan to put this poll up in the next few days. Any more? If we don;t have more than one choice from all who participated, then I will put one per person in the first part of the poll, and then the others as bonuses. There are I think 24 right now, but if more people participate (and those with fewer entries add more, I will try to fairly even-ish out the number of entries per person for the list. If there are no more, say, then five of mine will be included as bonuses with Beth Gibbons as my "official" prime nominee (a good representative of my tastes).
EDIT: Here is that list again, did I miss anything:
Logan Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" (my #1) Eunuch "Gnome and Fortune" St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" Tapir! "Mountain Song" The Smile "Bending Hectic" Julia Holter "Something in the Room She Moves"
TheGazzardian Still House Plants "M M M" Solar "Blues" Torres "Collect" Blackbriar "Moonflower" Leprous "Atonement"

Frets N Worries The Decemberists "Burial Ground"

Yeah, under about ten minutes ideally. I love music by the Decemberists (I have The Crane Wife and The Hazards of Love -- great albums), but have yet to hear the newest.
This is a fine nomination.

Hi,
Wonder why some folks take this personally? If it doesn't fit you, why bother responding? It wouldn't be you for sure ... it's not meant to sound like everyone does not listen, which obviously is not true, but the response by those who (supposedly) listen to it all (hahaha!!!!) ... is kind of amusing.
At least I admitted I had not listened to a lot of things and needed to catch up ...

Generally participants have been really good about listening to the selections before voting in these interactive polls and some would comment on every selection. The regulars have all been diligent that way, but sometimes we have had people vote or enter the nominations without following the guidelines, which is no biggie.
There will be no expectation to listen to all when voting, I just ask people to check out one from each suggestor in the first section of the poll (one need not listen the whole way through but it is suggested). the way I plan to organise it is.
Here again are those that have been suggested (which is 28 in total if I got it right)
Logan Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" (my #1) Eunuch "Gnome and Fortune" St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" Tapir! "Mountain Song" The Smile "Bending Hectic" Julia Holter "Something in the Room She Moves"
TheGazzardian Still House Plants "M M M" Solar "Blues" Torres "Collect" Blackbriar "Moonflower" Leprous "Atonement"
Lewian Adult Jazz "Marquee" Barbara Morgenstern "Die Liebe zur Sache"
Nogbad_The_Bad Sleepytime Gorilla Museum "Burn Into Light"
Cristi Sgàile "Ptarmigans Cry"
Richardh Melvins "She's Got Weird Arms" Bat For Lashes "The Dream of Delphi"
Frets N Worries The Decemberists "Burial Ground"
MikeEnRegalia Ihsahn "The Distance Between Us" Caligula's Horse "Stormchaser" DarWin "Be That Man"
--------------------
And I plan to organise it in sections. The first post has the top chosen pick (or only pick) from each contributor. Those I ask people to please listen through. Then we have two bonus sections: The first has people's (not all did) second pick (to honour those with two or more), and the third has others for those who listed more than two. So this is what I had in mind. I want to keep it fair because different people have different numbers of mentions.
Official Top Picks Section (expected listening and voting for two or three choices):
Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" Still House Plants "M M M" (is that the number one nomination?) IDLES "Jungle" Orange Blossom "Mawj" Adult Jazz "Marquee" Sleepytime Gorilla Museum "Burn Into Light" Sgàile "Ptarmigans Cry" Melvins "She's Got Weird Arms" The Decemberists "Burial Ground" Ihsahn - The Distance Between Us
------------------
Bonus One (for number two picks as nominations): Vote for up to two choices
Eunuch "Gnome and Fortune" Solar "Blues" Ghost Funk Orchestra "Nova" (that okay as number two choice?) Aquaserge "Sommets" Barbara Morgenstern "Die Liebe zur Sache" Bat For Lashes "The Dream of Delphi" Caligula's Horse "Stormchaser"
------------------------------------
Bonus Two (for those third choices - vote for one)
Julia Holter "Something in the Room She Moves" Torres "Collect" William Shatner "Elephants and Termites" ? DarWin "Be That Man"
Bonus Three (for those fourth choices - vote for one) St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" Blackbriar "Moonflower" Mdou Moctar "Imouhar"
Bonus Four (the others, fifth or sixth mentions -- mention fave in a post) The Smile "Bending Hectic" or Tapir! "Mountain Song", Leprous "Atonement", Ghost Funk Orchestra "Totality (Crown-Lite Dub)"
You get the idea, so in four sections, only the first one being "required". And I ask all to list their votes in a post. I will add a playlist to this topic soon with the choices in the order above unless more people add choices, people ask for changes.... This is not set in stone but what I had been planning to fairly accommodate people with different numbers of suggestions and not make it onerous on those who, say, only listed one to listen.

I am good with how my suggestions are placed. You can drop the last Ghost Funk Orchestra track to make room for other suggestions.

Generally participants have been really good about listening to the selections before voting in these interactive polls and some would comment on every selection. The regulars have all been diligent that way, but sometimes we have had people vote or enter the nominations without following the guidelines, which is no biggie.
If the guidelines for the poll are as such, then I'll certainly try. Listening to 24 tracks will at least require 90 minutes, it's easier said than done (20 years ago, as a single IT professional with no children, it would have been no problem at all).
It's much easier with the sections. In order to vote properly I'd need to listen to all candidates in one session, which should be possible under an hour now

Yeah, under about ten minutes ideally. I love music by the Decemberists (I have The Crane Wife and The Hazards of Love -- great albums), but have yet to hear the newest.
This is a fine nomination.
And listening to "Joan in the Garden" for my own pleasure now. Very good stuff!
Yes, a really strong comeback after a long hiatus.

--------------------------------------------
For myself, if choosing between Tapir's and The Smile, love The Smile but likely would leave that off due to its knownness (but those are totally optional for listening and voting as are all bonus ones).
--------------------------------------------
I plan to put the poll up tomorrow. I only really "expect" the first ten to be listened to, voted for, and mentioned in a post from participants, but I do really appreciate people who check out the rest (and vote and comment). If it's too much for any of you, it's not a big deal to me (happy for what level of participation people can manage in this group activity).
There is still time to make any changes and for other people to add their own. It's easy to amend the list. Thanks to all who participated -- a cracking year thus far, imo.

I like the longer one. Great epic.

^ It's not really an epic, more like a longish track with an extended improv section in the middle. Really great!

^ ^^ I really enjoyed the longer one too, and while I would not use it for the main voting section due to its length (twice ten minutes), I can add it to the last bonus section. George, if you updated it, you might want to post your listening link again.

I'll have to spend a bit of time catching up. I've heard 60% of the 'top' selection. Will have to make a playlist in Apple Music so I can listen to this while I work.
Posted By: TheGazzardian

I made the playlist and have listened to it 1.5 times. Actually it's got a bunch of pretty sweet tunes in it and I don't mind listening to it at all.
Adult Jazz and Tapir! probably stood out to me most the first time through (from the stuff I hadn't heard) and both the Bat for Lashes and Beth Gibbons tracks started to show their beauty a bit more.
A few of the others are starting to stand out as well.

^ Awesome. I have yet to do a proper listening off all of the choices, but, not surprisingly as I made the topic this way, I will want to people listen to all and consider all. Glad you like the Tapir! While I posted it low in the list for some reason, not that it matters, I really like it and the album it's off.
By the way, I know the way I set up voting could be bit confusing for some -- I love playing around with such things and I wanted to be inclusive -- but I wanted to be inclusive and offer some flexibility in voting and that which one is expected to listen. As long as people share their votes I don't much mind how people vote. As I often say, I pay more attention to the posts more than the polls and I don't treat polls as contests (not that others here would either as I don't think that's the Interactive Poll mindset from my experience). The voting is part of the fun as well as sharing our appreciations. :)
I'm going to be getting really busy again (it comes in spurts, I mean work specifically) and so probably will want to listen again tonight and maybe vote by tomorrow. No hurry for anyone else, but I tend to avoid this site when busy with other things. PA is a great way to pass the time, but it can take up a lot of time the way I use it quite often.
Once in, thanks to all who participated. And I hope, Pedro, that you do find some enjoyable music. No doubt the comparison is not very apt, and it may even be offensive as we may not be worthy of such comparison, but we (the PA Spaced Buccaneers) are something like a collective Space Pirate Radio Guy Guden.

My votes:
From the Official Nominees section (options 1 to 10):
Orange Bloosom "Mawj" IDLES "Jungle" and Still House Plants "M M M"
Wanted to give votes for Melvins) Barbara D. and The Decemberists too.
Bonus Selections 1 (options 11-17):
Aquaserge "Sommets" Adult Jazz "Marquee"
Honorable mention to Bat For Lashes' "The Dream of Delphi"
Bonus Selections 2 (poll options 18 to 20):
"Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!" And Shatner [might have] thought he couldn't get any higher than with the Blue Origin Space Shuttle, but he just did with my stellar vote.
{Note: The elephant in the room... I'm sorry, I made a mistake by not putting Shatner in the poll just because it was not in the playlist -- sorry will add to another option in that section as an OR option. }
Bonus Selections 3 (option 24):
Ghost Funk Orchestra "Totality (Crown Lites Dub). Love this.
Bonus Selections 4 (option 25):
The Decemberists "Joan in the Garden".
Sorry about not giving Shatner his own space especially since that fictional starship Captain has actually been to space.

Haven't finished listening yet, but I thought I'd share some of my very subjective impressions, at least for the main nominations...:
I discoverd this Beth Gibbons' track thanks to the radio and I think it's beautiful. I listened to her album twice now and although all of the tracks keep that beauty I'm afraid that it doesn't have enough diversity to keep my attention throughout.
After the first minute of Still House Plants i thought "this is not for me", but it has something quirky, punky and intriguing over it. Interesting. Will listen to it again, although I don't think it will end up high on my lists.
Idles deliver a rich kind of indie rock; a short full sounding hypnotic epic. Very nice.
Yes, this Barbara Morgenstern track is beautiful. An interesting rich minimalist piece (if such a paradox makes sense) with clear chamber pop qualities. Will explore her album. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is a band I should like, but I don't. Somehow their chamber rock + metal formula doesn't work for me. I recognize the quality, but especially the metal side rather puts me off.
Talking about metal (is it?), I prefer Sgàile then. I probably wouldn't become a fan, but it is nice to hear this kind of polished hard rock sometimes. A bit conventional maybe, but quite enjoyable.
Melvins deliver a kind of 80s flavoured RIO punk () on this track - quite nice, actually. Not sure if I would like a whole album of it, but a track like this every once in a while is great.
I do like the The Decemberists track. Very "radio friendly" in a way: accessible, melodic, captivating... Nice, but not "outstanding".
Oh, how I hate growling... But there are other elements in this Ihsahn track that I appreciate much more: the (normal) singing, the orchestral/symphonic aspects, a.o. Maybe a bit conventional on the composition side but by moments quite enjoyable, despite the growling bits.
The first bonus section is of more consistent high quality music, to my ears. I like all of them: the Bryan Ferry goes chamber rock track by Eunuchs. I love that Blues track by Solar! The Ghost Funk Orchestra very enjoyable, just like the chamber-rock jazzy (duh) Adult Jazz track, the beautiful dreamy electronic folk-pop of Bat For Lashes... Even Caligula's Horse is not unpleasant (but maybe a bit too conventional to my ears).
I'll have to read the manual again to understand how we may vote, but I haven't decided yet, anyway...
Oh, and the Orange Blossom track doesn't play for me in the playlist; if other people encounter this problem they can find it on page 1 of this thread.

^ Thanks, Kees. I never really warmed up to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum either (can be too brutal for me and I am not the biggest metal guy despite, say, liking Isahn. I'm hardly the least metal guy either so maybe I should stop thinking about that altogether lol). Most I really liked from this list.
-------------------------------------------
By the way, I used asterisks hopefully to help define the sections from poll options 1 to 23.
- SECTION ONE for the expected listening where you can vote for two or three options is * Beth Gibbons "Floating on a Moment" to Ihsahn "The Distance Between Us" * - SECTION TWO of bonus options where you can vote for up to two options is * Eunuchs "Gnome and Fortune" to Caligula's Horse "Stormchaser" * - SECTION THREE of bonus options where you can vote for one track is * Julia Holter "Something in the Room She Moves" to DarWin "Be That Man" * - SECTION FOUR of bonus options where you can vote for one is * St. Vincent "All Born Screaming" to Mdou Moctar "Imouhar" * - For the last two poll options with multiple entries, those or OR options. You can vote for one track from option 24 and one from option 25.
I was able to add the hidden from me due to location Orange Blossom "Mawj" video you listed to the playlist (so two there now in the playlist even if only one is available).

Finished my second listen through and realized that I missed the Eunuch and The Smile tracks, so added those. I like the Eunuch one quite a bit. Somehow I didn't realize The Smile was a Radiohead offshoot until hearing this song.
This time through, the heavier tracks started to gain some ground, especially Sgaile and Caligula's Horse.

OK, starting to decide on some votes: From the Main nominations I go for Beth Gibbons and Barbara Morgenstern; these are the two tracks that really stand out for me.
Regarding the first bonus section it becomes much more difficult, because of the diversity of the tracks that I like very much, especially Gnome and Fortune, Blues, Nova, Marquee and The Dream of Delphi. I think I'll go with the first two - a third vote could go to Bat For Lashes...
Then, Bonus #2 is easy: I didn't propose Julia Holter, but I could have. Now it allows me to vote for her.
For Bonus #3 I'll go with St. Vincent, though I also very much appreciated Blackbriar's Moonflower.
That's it for now...

From section 1, I voted for Orange Blossom and Barbara Morgenstern. I like Sleepytime Gorilla Musrum but I already own this. One of two that I was familiar with (other than my suggestions) prior to the poll. The other is The Smile. There would have been a tie for my third vote.
From Section 2, I voted for Solar and Aquaserge. Eunuchs would have been third.

Thanks Stephen, George and Kees for your votes. I found much very enjoyable music here and in my own time this year looking for music that might appeal), and to think that this year is very far from over. And I'm happy that no one complained about the way I set things up as I know I can over-complicate things; I tend not to go the simplest route. I wanted to cover it all in a way that I thought might work fairly since different people suggested different numbers and would be practical and flexible since we don't have all the time in the world, but I also like to present something of a challenge often for those who wish to embrace it. Wonderful recommendations from all of you who participated; thanks for sharing. And thanks in advance to any other respondents.

Third listen, I think one or two more and I'll make my vote. Not a whole lot of change. The Decemberists song (Burial Ground) is getting more and more wedged in as an ear worm. I don't think the William Shatner song is meant to be listened to this much / this close together, I wouldn't mind not hearing it again for a few months, although it's entertaining enough.
Only reason to listen to it again is there are a few tracks that haven't quite 'registered'. I'd like to be able to recall a melody or at least an emotional reaction to each track before I vote. I may remove all the songs that I feel I've got a hold on already before the next listen, which should lessen the load.
I wish I liked the SGM song more. I was so excited for this album, after years and years of waiting and loving their first 3. But I don't think any of their new songs have connected with me like their old stuff did. I tried going back to their old stuff and I loved it as much as ever. The new stuff has all the right ingredients. But I can't remember what any of the songs sound like when I'm not listening to it, other than the This Heat cover. I was hoping having a 'highlight' in isolation might stand out more but it hasn't happened yet.

I start with the official nominees. I have a hard time voting as pretty much all of them are good but none is outstanding. To be honest I'm not yet fully convinced of 2024 as a music year. Anyway, I think my no. 1 is the Still House Plants track. I'll also vote for Beth Gibbons and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
More later.

The Bonus Group 1 overall is quite a bit more to my liking than the Nonbonus Officials. I love that Aquaserge song (very reliable band!) but won't vote for it as I didn't discover it through this poll. Votes go to Eunuchs and the wonderful Bat for Lashes. I have an earlier album of hers that I like a lot, but lost track of her in the meantime.

In Bonus Group 2 I vote for William Shatner, very charming. The Julia Holter albums is great but I have that already. They're all good.

Final votes go to Mdou Moctar (very tough decision against the Blackbriar track that I also like very much), and Leprous together with the Ghost Funk Orchestra (and then I knew The Smile and Tapir already).
Still nothing has three votes... taste is very subjective...

For group 1, my favourites (excluding my suggestion, Still House Plants) were Beth Gibbons and Barbara Morgenstern. I give slight precedence to Barbara; Beth's track is beautiful, but it feels like it's near the end of a road of discovery; my interest in her is due to her history, and while I like the album, it doesn't inspire me to branch out. Whereas Barbara is part of a scene I have no history with and can see myself exploring further / branching out into.
But of course the vote should be on the musical quality, and I also tend to like Barbara's a bit more.
Honourable mention to Decemberists, Burial Ground may be the track from this list that gets stuck in my head easiest.

Group 2, gave it to Adult Jazz with Eunuch being my second choice.
Group 3, the only group where I voted for myself. Liked the other songs but not enough to vote for them.
Group 4/5 will give it to Tapir.

Well, this had already moved off the first page and a third down the second page. I want to thank those who already have voted and commented on selections, and no pressure on those who have not, and I'm hoping someone will come up with a new Interactive Poll soon. I wish there was a good way to entice many who don't normally participate in such thing into participating or making one themselves.
By the way, here's a track I liked off Uboa's latest, which I will mention here.
