That's hard to say. I think both "eras" of the band are equally good, although the music and focus is different. The early stuff is obviously more progressive and interesting, but the later stuff is more refined and somewhat more listenable.

good question and considering my four favorite albums are split between with and without him. I guess I can say, I enjoy Gentle Giant whether it is with or without him ha ha hah. Without Phil, though Octopus is my favorite. They had more variety with Phil, yes, but the post-Octopus albums are slightly better generally, IMO. ------------- RIO/AVANT/ZEUHL - The best thing you can get with yer pants on! |

I liked the sax and trumpet...when Phil left those did as well. Oooh... looks like I'll be the voice of controversy. When Phil left the band got tighter and more focused, AND stopped filling their albums with obscure literary allusions. They didn't lose out musically as Ray could play trumpet too and Kerry handled the softer vocals nicely (albeit never live |

You disappoint me, Trousie; I would have bet you vote for GG with Phil.
And I certainly don't agree they were at their creative peak without
him. Tighter and more focused, yes; but that's rather something to
deplore. I like them freaky and wild. Though I like GG after Phil left
too, but my preference is the early period.

It's not that Phil wouldn't be a good musician (no doubt about it). But most of the
band-members didn't want to have him in Gentle Giant anymore I think.
So it was better for Gentle Giant when he left. |
