I've been having a lot of fun playing around with AI recently and I got to making imaginary album covers for legendary bands, imagining that it was from a certain time and line-up of the band.
I'm using the Microsoft app 'Copilot,' which can use Chatgpt-4. I give pretty elaborate commands to it and it has come up with some amazing results. Especially if the command starts with "a vinyl album cover with a logo saying '______' above a scene with ________."
Starting the command with "a vinyl album cover" gets it to provide results that look genuinely like a vinyl product in the hand.
Some of the results are amazing. But I'd love to see what anyone else can come up with.
I'll start us off. Here are some imaginary lost Genesis album covers with the classic Gabriel line-up, for an album I imagine was the album after Foxtrot. What do you think it would sound like? What topics would be covered in the songs?
Fun!

Nice work! I'd buy those three Genesis albums just on the strength of the album covers alone. After all, they're a big improvement over any of the album covers that came after Foxtrot.

Hi,
I like the art, but the subject matter is sad ... why do we have to continue doing this "hero" thing all the time? None of the progressive music was really about the "hero" until one guy in one band who thinks he is the book's thumper!

The pictures look nice, but I don't see the connection with Genesis.

There is a knight and ermm that's it. PG era Genesis album covers were quirky and funny (until TLLDOB). Nursery Crime is one of the best album covers of any band. AI generated covers are what they are but are never going to be quirky or funny.

Yep
I find these enjoyable too. They look very real. However damesels in distress and noble knights are more of a vintage pulp fiction genre. The twelve year old me
would have been intrigued by such covers, I suppose. Still these are typically the Genesis covers
someone who's only heard about what Progressive Rock supposedly
means (as in all the misconseptions), but never actually listened to it - would make.
Which I guess is exactly why these AI generated covers ended up looking
like they do. That said all three covers would have been an improvement
of actual covers I've seen by bands such as Fruup, Fates Warning,
Fantasy, Magnum mm...

Really? You'd rather have full blown Thomas Kinkade-level kitsch covers art over Trick of the Tail?

My thinking behind these was not about a hero. It poses a question... why is a knight visiting a woman in a poor village. What for? There could be many potentials stories to the image.

I think the Greenslade ones look a lot better than the Genesis ones and seem to fit the "Greenslade style" better, especially the first one of the four. I'm fast-loading and have lots of ads for colanders.

This product is very limited. I tried making some for my own project and it keeps misspelling the name. It also won't make any album covers for toilets and farts.

This one is interesting and at the same time demonstrates why AI generated images always suck. I'm not here to bash them, I like to play around with the technology - it's just that I've yet to see a really good result.

Those covers have some thing in common: One refers to the most significant song on such an album: Dancing with the Sunlit Knight. But I don't even think that Gabriel-era Genesis was altogether capable of such copycat behaviour.
Those covers are reminiscent of a 21st century Neo or Crossover band rather than a lost Genesis album from early 1973. Nevertheless they look fine.
I don't use AI, but I imagine a somewhat darker cover art for such an album, with a pub and that knight pouring some beer from a mug through the opening of his combat helmet, but I cannot tell why...

Ok, give me some ideas for it and I'll give it a try.
Remember, it doesn't have to resemble any of their past covers. Some people here have been like "well that doesn't look like it's an album from _____" and I'm thinking why does it have to be a copy of a past album? My Greenslade ones are different, because their covers had a theme of the multi armed green dude.

I actually already did an ELP one, here below.
The AI is not good enough to reproduce so much text, which is why I'm not adding album titles. It's better to have a short word as a logo, and even then it gets it wrong. Sometimes it produces an amazing picture but the logo is all wonky.
Again, I'm not trying to make it look like past albums, so don't tell me it doesn't look like an ELP album. Just try to play along and imagine what it might possibly sound like!

I type in something along the lines of the following when trying to generate an album cover:
a vinyl album cover with a logo saying '_____' above a scene with __________ in _________ , in a 70s art style/60s art style/Roger Dean art style (etc.)

I have no expectations or criticisms. Was just curious how much the 'directorial' text would influence the image. I do see a strong similarity in style to all the covers it generates.

Here are a few random individual ones I did.
The Love album cover is quite possibly the most beautiful I've generated. It doesn't fit with any of their previous album covers but I just think it's sublime.
I imagine this Rush album came out in the 90s where Rush decided to totally go back to their prog roots.

The first one here is the best one, imo. Sadly, AI screwed up the logo, but the image is top knotch.

In any case, if you took away the pentagram, it would be a pretty cool cover. Especially because the central character looks a lot like Ozzy.
