So one need not do decades sequentially for this; the decades can be in any order. I started with the 60s, and am now doing the 80s partially because I knew these were the songs I wanted to do. The 1980s is a decade that some here and elsewhere consider really poor, but as with every decade that I have taken the time to really explore, I have found plenty to love. Having become a teen in the 80s it may be more of a special time to to me than many others, but what I most listen to from then now I did not know at the time. The idea is to nominate a track from the 80s that is in Prog Archives and one that is not. You might need to double-check (I happen to know the database pretty well). When the time comes, please vote for two in PA and two out of PA. Also, please type the artist/band, song, album and year. That makes it easier for me to add, and sometimes videos do not show in all regions so it helps to add that. Here are my two choices... Yeah, 80s are a great decade for music if you take the trouble and look a little deeper. And even if you don't there's excellent stuff also in the mainstream and semi-indie mainstream (if that makes sense). Sielun Veljet were a big cult band in Finland back in the day but very little known elsewhere although they gigged around Europe too. They are my favourite band ever. I never got to see them live in their heyday as they quit in 1991 I think, when I was 13. They did a comeback/nostalgia tour a few years ago, though, and they still had it. Their singer started a solo career after Sielun Veljet and got very popular. What I'm going to do in these polls is to present Finnish bands only, and it was very difficult to choose a non-PA track for this one as there was so much good stuff to pick from. 80s = Nena  But I won't go there now. I was actually in a rock mood, but for my prog suggestion I turn up with a love song...  And as a consequence: a child. But that one is more rock. When, in the 80s, I was browsing through the bins of a second hand record store, looking for the Hungarian Omega, I stumbled upon this one. The album cover already told me it wasn't the same band, but when listening I was immediately sold. And so was the LP, to me... Nice. I was a Sky fan as a teenager, at least around Sky 2 and when I saw them live on the Sky 3 tour. I followed them up to the rather unremarkable Cadmium, but never heard The Great Balloon Race. The Camberwell Now album is a top 5 of all time one. I try to still play artists that we haven't heard in any Interactive Poll. Not many remaining in my collection maybe (at least of those that are really great and that I still love to play after all the years). Of course I knew the name and had heard some music, but I only really got into S&TB music recently. Been very into all of the S&TB 80s albums as well as the 1978 debut, and the single "Israel" of course (seems like a rather topical subject, Israel I mean). "The Killing Jar" off the album Peep Show is a favourite of mine.
I think the 80s was an extraordinary decade. In Prog, extraordinary (to me) for RIO/Avant/Zeuhl as well as neo-psych and outside of it (and in it) for Post-Punk, Goth, Neoclassical, Darkwave, Ethereal Wave, Dream Pop, New Wave, various jazz and folk etc. etc. It is unique. There's a lot I don't like but also I have found no shortage in music that does appeal to me. I do have more in my collection from the first half of the 80s, and sure I know and like more from the 70s, but that does not diminish the 80s for me. Anyway, I liked that Finnish song. And glad to see Suomi represented. My grandfather was born in Finland (although a Swedish-speaking Finn). Edited to improve the post marginally, through excision, hopefully. |

I love that track (Israel) from a long way back. Great choice.  Sorry, I actually meant to reference the track Peek A Boo (not the title of the album it came from). Such a great band and easily for me the best of all the punk/new wave bands. |
