I just saw in the RIP thread that Chris Karrer passed away on 2 January aged 76. Chris Karrer is among the most important and influential German prog pioneers, having played on Phallus Dei, which is usually seen as the starting point of the German scene. He was active with ADII pretty much until the end as major driving force. He was interested in music from all around the world, became a master of many styles and brought in many influences. He was a great improviser and not constrained by any traditional limits of song writing. Despite his eclectic approach he had an unmistakable personal style and voice. For me he belongs to the greats of prog and for sure deserves his own thread. I play two tracks here that aren't so well known; obviously most here will know the classical albums Yeti, Tanz der Lemminge and Wolf City, but here's two killer tracks from Nada Moonshine# with Chris very prominent in the first one in particular, and a rare improvised collaboration with Embryo's Christian Burchard: |

My first hero in Kraut Rock! I read a review of "Wolf City" in the US rock magazine "Circus," and the reviewer went hard after Chris, saying that "many of his guitar sounds seem accidental" or some-such. Never forgot that slam, 50 years later!! RIP Chris, thanks for proving them wrong!

Hi, Lothar Meid was very important to the band ... and on that live video that PP put on, you can see him ... and all of a sudden you can see how important he was from "Dance of the Lemmings" on ... his touch is unmistakable and neither are his words. He's special in "Hijack". One sad thing, btw ... Lothar Meid had a solo album "All-Bumm" and he called his band "18 Karat Gold" ... and one of the sad things is that this album has never been re-released, and the only version I have is on a Space Pirate Radio show where Guy played the whole album when it came out (1973) although I think it took Guy some 2 or 3 years to find the album. What brought this up was that the remastered "Utopia" album has a few cuts from Lothar's album, and I'm wondering where the rest is ... still missing is "If My Guru Would Know" sung by Renate and a bunch of other things. I would like to see this stuff cleaned up better. Chris' solo stuff is also not complete, and is hard to find. I still have not heard his album with Mani Neumeier and some of his early solo stuff.

That is incorrect about 24 Karat Gold. It has been re-released and I have a copy. |
