I wanna know what are you guys' favorite deep cuts/dark horses off famous prog staples. Or just underrated tracks that don't get enough love. They don't necessarily have to be top 100 on PA or anything, but just off relatively known albums. Ill start with a list of about 10 favorites:
"I Am the Dance of Ages" (Off "All Together Now," by Argent)
"White Mountain" (Off "Trespass," by Genesis)
"Croma" (Off Alphataurus' eponymous debut album)
"Articolazioni" (Off "Tilt," by Arti e Mestieri)
"Sky High" (Off "The Good Earth," by Manfred Mann's Earth Band)
"Summer '68" (Off "Atom Hear Mother," by Pink Floyd)
"King of Twilight" (Off "A Tab in the Ocean," by Nektar)
"The Face" (Off "The Power and the Glory," by Gentle Giant)
"Alaska" (Off U.K.'s eponymous debut album)
"The Prophet" (Off "Time and a Word," by Yes)
These are just a few of my favorites, and I really think these songs should get more love. Some of em (Summer '68, The Face, Alaska) are a little more surface level but still criminally underrated. What are you guys' thoughts?

Argent - n/a
Genesis - it's ok but the Knife is heads and shoulders above the rest
Alpha T - n/a
Tilt - n/a
Earth Band - I don't know that particular album well enough
Floyd - I feel the band are trying to pull off some comedic element on this one and it comes off forced - not a favorite.
Nektar - I agree it's underrated
GG - that whole album is consistent but probably seeded no. 5 on my list (testament to the band really!)
UK - I think it's rated properly and I'm glad it is!
Yes - that album is a mixed bag but Prophet doesn't move me in the slightest tbh (sorry ((

I Love Time and a Word, (The Song) of Yes's shorter songs (under 5min) it's probably my second favorite

Floyd - Honestly, Shine on You Crazy Diamond 6-9 feels like a deep cut from Wish You Were Here, The Wall has many great deep cuts, I'm going to go with Waiting for the Worms or The Trial
GG - Not Sure how much of a deep cut, but I Love the song Dog's Life
Genesis - Most of the Stuff off of TLLDOB, but I really like 'Anyways'
How about Mike Oldfield's Platinum Suite, Part 3 Charleston, freakin love that song.
Yes - Wondrous Stories, To Be Over, Mood for a Day, Time and a Word
off the top of my head

-
Gong - Zero The Hero And The Witch's Spell (Flying Teapot)
Caravan - As I Feel I Die (If I could do it all over again, I'd do it all over you)
VdGG - Whatever Would Robert Have Said (Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other)
Magma - Ki Ïahl Ö Lïahk (1001° Centigrades)
Renaissance - The Vultures Fly High (Scheherazade And Other Stories) while I do have some issues with the title track, this other story is a perfect little ditty.
Peter Hammill - The Lie (Bernini's Saint Theresa) (The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage)
Comus - The Bite (First Utterance)
Jethro Tull - For a Thousand Mothers (Stand Up) -just awesome energy and drive
The Mothers of Invention - Invocation and Ritual Dance of the Young Pumpkin (Absolutely Free)
Gentle Giant - An Inmates Lullaby (In a Glass House) -it represents a certain kind of playfulness in sound I miss from them after Phil left.
-agree with the already mentioned: A Pillow of Winds (& Summer '68, really) and White Mountain

I can mostly think of Pink Floyd and Yes. From Pink Floyd, things like Remember a Day, Julia Dream, Mudmen, The Hero's Return (parts 1 AND 2). From Yes, things like Harold Land, Run Through the Light, Holy Lamb, Shock to the System, The More we Live Let Go, Be the One.

Great list. I adore most of those songs. I'll add two.

I love Can Utility. One of the most underrated Genesis songs of all time. I'm actually seeing Steve Hackett live in November on his Foxtrot Tour, so I can't wait to see it live. "Survival," is also a favorite of mine, but I feel like it is well appreciated in the community (and rightfully so).

Great picks man! I always considered "Aspirations" to be more of a fan favorite off that album but I can see it being a little more obscure since Kerry Minear is singing. Dusk and Can Utility are awesome and definitely need more appreciation in the greater Genesis fanbase. "Twilight Alehouse," is actually a really interesting pick here. I completely forgot this song existed so I went back and listened to it, and it's amazing. "Leaf and Stream," is one of my favorite Wishbone Ash songs, and I listen to it a lot when I sleep. "Aristillus," is also a really nice song. Definitely didn't expect to see "Pictures of home" on here but I love the drum work from Ian Paice on here (and as always the Jon Lord organ :).

You'd be shocked actually. The Trespass album is absolutely loaded with some of the greatest Genesis deep cuts. "Visions of Angels," and "Stagnation," are my two favorites, coupled with the more well known, "Looking for Someone." I recently picked it up on vinyl and I've been wearing it out.

I agree. I was once in the "Knife is the best" category and then I really listened to that whole album. It's up there with anything they ever did in the Gabriel era. Stagnation in particular is just massive.

Good pick!
The LP is sandwiched between 'classics' and marks a departure in sound and scope, but is great for what it is!
The only songs I'm not keen on are Sealion & Third Hoorah - whole of side 1 is flawless imo

Imo any prog song that wasn't a "hit" or played on the radio is a deep track. I mean come on this is prog we're talking about.

I have long felt that Side Two of TFTO ("The Remembering - High the Memory") was a deep cut that was very much under-appreciated. It has some of the best vocals & instrumentals on the entire LP!

Yes - Southside of the sky -Fragile
Yes - Parallels -Going for the One
Genesis - The Lady Lies - And then there were three
Genesis - Cul De Sac - Duke
Genesis - Lilywhite Lilyth and grand parade of lifeless packaging from Lamb
King Crimson - Epitaph from "Court"
King Crimson -The entire albums from ITWOP to Discipline
ELP - Title track to Trilogy - Trilogy
ELP- The Barbarian - First album
Jethro Tull - My God - Aqualung
Kansas - The Wall, Cheyenne Anthem and Miracles out of Nowhere from Leftoverture
The Moody Blues - too many to mention but a few favorites are candle of life, minstrel song, you and me, my song, so deep within you and the actor.
Rush - circumstances, entre nous, Jacob's Ladder, Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, Losing It, In the End. With Rush it's difficult to say what the deep tracks are because even the so called lesser known songs are appreciated by the fans. Is YYZ or Xanadu a lesser known song? Maybe only to someone who has only heard their radio songs.

Pandora probably plays everything though. I don't think they have a dj arbitrarily choosing which ones are good (or popular) and which ones aren't. I've never heard any of those on regular radio (or at least not in a very, very long time). Plus they would be very likely to be played by Sirius XM's deep tracks channel.

It's among King Crimson's three - or at least five most popular, easiest recognized and treasured songs. It's really one of Progressive Rock most iconic and "famous" songs of all time. This single is ranked no. 12 of all time on RYM (and 1. for 1976, when it was released). Epitaph is about as far from a deep cut you can get.

Works I felt deserved more attention are:
Yes - "Then"
Rush - "Open Secrets"
Kansas - "Apercu"
Porcupine Tree - "A Smart Kid"
Genesis - "The Lamia"
Jethro Tull - "A Passion Play"
Frank Zappa - "Zoot Allures"
Pink Floyd - "Burning Bridges"
Off the top of my head.

Pandora is very oddly formulaic in the sense that the more times you frequent their stations, the more of the same tracks you get played to you! For a progger, this is the opposite of what I'm looking for.
If Pandora plays ''everything'', it's definitely not prog. And no, they do not have a DJ for that.
If you mean Radio Radio, then you get mainstream, and that is certainly not ELP or Crimson. Prog stations tend to play the "standouts" for the most part - I'm sure on that part. I don't know anything about Sirius XM though

"Pictures of a City" on Poseidon. I saw KC perform this live, it was remarkable....Jakko on vocals was very impressive, and Mel Collins, well....
Yeah, I know, "Schizoid Man Part 2," not as good as SM, etc. etc.

RE my choice of Epitaph (I won't quote both posts for the sake of brevity):
Among prog fans no Epitaph isn't a deep cut but then you could say the same about "the great deceiver,""starless" and other King Crimson songs. The op wasn't clear about this but since this song has probably(or coud be) played on the deep tracks channel like I already stated it seemed like fair game to me. The title track to the first KC album and schizoid man are also deep tracks to most classic rock fans and in general but not to prog fans imo. But Epitaph being less known seemed like a better choice to me. Heck, I even talked to a guy old enough to know about KC but never even heard of them. But prog fans know a lot more than just Epitaph trust me. But again I'm going by the general rock audience and not prog fans (If I was doing the latter then I would certainly agree with the gripes about it not being a deep track).
When I said "everything" I meant any random song by a prog band and they seem to only play the major prog bands and nothing too obscure (based on what I've seen). Anyway, we all have our opinions on this so really no sense in arguing about it and going around in circles. EODAFAIC.

^No it's not really about different opinions. The thing is, you don't know what a deep cut means, so let me explain: A deep cut is a song that is less widely played and less well-known than other songs on the same album or by the same artist

Different opinions about what a deep cut is. Someone mentioned Cinema by Yes. That won a grammy award for best instrumental so you could argue that isn't a deep cut either for that reason. Anyway, I know very well what a deep cut is. Maybe you don't. I listen to the deep tracks channel on Sirius XM regularly and so I obviously know what kind of things they play (and they play stuff more well known than KC). Also, I have listened to the reguar radio for over 40 years and rarely if ever heard any of the songs on my list on there including Epitaph but it qualifies anyway based on your statement of "less widely played" alone not to mention "played less than well known than the other songs on the album." Love to see "Book of Saturdays" getting love. Wetton's performance on this song coupled with Fripp's guitar work is just outstanding. Still one of my favorite KC solos of all time at the end of the song.

Awesome Steely Dan reference. "Caves of Altamira" is an awesome track and definitely needs more appreciation in the prog community. "Discipline," is a favorite of mine as well.

Really interesting list! I'm familiar with "Fallen Angel,"(an absolutely majestic piece off Red) "Echoes," "The Song is Over,"(great selection, didn't expect to see the Who on this thread) and "Soapbox Opera,"(one of the most underrated Supertramp songs ever) but I actually don't know most of these. Just went and listened to a bunch off the songs off this list. Wow. "Galadriel," is beautiful, and Hackett's song "Take these Pearls" is an awesome ethereal piece. As someone who wasn't very familiar with Golden Earring I was caught off guard by the 2 9-minute epics on Moontan. I appreciate the knowledge.

OK, here's a very weird one, specially for this site. Not quiet prog, I guess. Now, when I was at highschool I heard a little piece, very electronic, from a friend. It seems it was from an old vinyl or single from her mother. I liked it since then... now, it I thought she told me it was from Richard Clayderman... now, back then I didn't even know much from him (not that I know much more now, actually), but what little I might have looked from him certainly didn't sound like that... I was given a name, in spanish... but it happens its real name is in french. OK, when I finally found it, it happened to be called L'enfant et la Mer... I expect that little piece would count as a deep cut from his discography, but I really like that one (I still do, now that I heard it again), and though short, I guess it isn't totally out of place among things like Jeam Michel Jarre or other 70's electronic pieces. Now, sorry to bring up an artist like Clayderman here, I guess I might have caused a small glitch in the PA system.

Its delightful isn't it. (sorry included an 's' at the end that shouldn't be there)
I need to listen to that album more. I love Red but struggle to connect with LTIA for some reason.
In answer to another post that suggested that Cinema is not a deep cut, my thinking is that Yes are not reknowned for 'instrumentals', well not in the same way that ELP for instance are. It's the only track off 90125 that I really love. Maybe Hearts would have been a better choice (?)

Hi,
It's impossible for me to list anything ... of 2K+ CD's and 1500 LP's ... there is way too much great music for me to say that I have a favorite cut from many albums ... and just the minute I find one, another shows up ... and I go nuts ... just recently I played Esperanto's Last Tango album, and that version of Eleanor Rigby is totally out of this world, and the track later "The Rape" is so excellent ... that you quickly forget many things that you have heard over 50 years of being with this stuff ...
And I don't want to get into pee shooter contests about songs ... I usually listen to the albums, not just the songs, which makes it harder for me to select one thing out of the rest in the album!

Indoor Games! awesome cut that my brother actually introduced me to. I thought it sounded a bit ridiculous with the horns when I first heard it, but I've grown on it a lot. "No Quarter," is another great selection. I'm not familiar with that version though so i'll check it out. Same goes for "Careful with that Axe," which is also love but I don't know that version.

ELP - Title track to Trilogy - Trilogy

I can see the argument that these are all deep cuts to non-prog fans, but in the context of this forum, a lot of these aren't "deep cuts." Epitaph, Trilogy, The Barbarian, and Jacob's Ladder (even Cheyenne Anthem) are pretty well known even to non-prog fans in the rock community. I do love to see the Genesis deep cuts you mentioned here (such as lilywhite lilith, grand parade, lady lies, and culdesac) and even South side of the Sky is awesome. I think the songs you mention here that stick out to me the most are "The Wall," and "Witch Hunt," which 100% need more recognition as staples of their respective artists' catalogs.

I'm enjoying this thread immensely! I haven't even thought about some of these songs in years, please keep it up!
For the sake of PA, I'd suggest that our "deep cuts" are whatever we wish them to be, vs. what commercial streaming services dictate. In other words, songs that tend to be under-appreciated or un-mentioned for some reason or another.
Take "Time Table" from Foxtrot. This song seems to draw faint praise on PA, but I find it to be a very charming nod to England's past, with some clever lyrics that tie the past to the future.

Love to see the two Genesis cuts you mentioned. "Harlequin" is beautiful and one of my favorites off Nursery Cryme. I've never seen "Just a Job To Do" mentioned anywhere and man am I happy to see it. Great insight with that pick dude. "Arriving UFO," is also a joy to listen to, but I was a little taken aback by "Luficer Sam," I'm not a huge fan. Overall a great list though.

"Fox Hill," is awesome. Kinda gives me an old English "Trick of the Tail," vibe. It makes me feel happy to see Iron Maiden somewhere on this thread, and especially to see a song off "Wasted Years" mentioned. Here's something similar to that song (Awesome proggy deep cut off "Powerslave")

I definitely recommend checking out IM! They have a lot of closet-prog songs that most fans just overlook and deem "Metal." In all truth Iron Maiden has a ton of proggy deep cuts. A lot of prog heads can't just enjoy good music that isn't eclectic for some reason, but here's a list of some of my favorite proggy (albeit heavy) IM songs:
Remember Tomorrow (Off their eponymous debut album) [NOTE: majority of the song is dominated by soft guitar overlays interrupted by the occasional rockin' section, including one of the most underrated solo sections ever by this band]
Strange World (Off their eponymous debut album) [NOTE: beautiful lyrics, heavily phased guitar, that of a band like "Eloy"]
Charlot the Harlot (Off their eponymous debut album) [NOTE: starts out super heavy but eventually broadens out, patience is key ]
Prodigal Son (Off Killers) [NOTE: Super proggy, tons of acoustic guitars genesis-esque twelve string progressions huge reccomendation]
Innocent Exile (Off Killers) [NOTE: sounds like an 80s version of an early Budgie song with complex drumming]
The Prisoner (Off Number of the Beast) [NOTE: opens with a old-timey monologue which transitiions into one of the most lyrically powerful songs by IM with lyrics like "I'm not a number, I'm a free man," and "Scratch me from your black book"]
Revelations (Off Piece of Mind) [NOTE: Very mythological lyrics about ancient Egypt)
The Duelists (Off Powerslave) [NOTE: Pretty thumpin, can be chill at times, but overall just some majestic-ass guitar riffing and progressions]
Infinite Dreams (Off Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) [NOTE: the beginning has a lot of synth which gives a progressive vibe, and then the song picks up about half way through]
The Prophecy (Off Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) [NOTE: This song is bookended by some of the proggiest guitar ever done by this band, but the middle get pretty heavy]
Hope you enjoy listening

^ yep IM are legends and basically a 'closet prog band'. I remember their interviews in the 80's and they didn't shy away from comparisons to 70's bands such as Pink Floyd and Yes. The synth you mention is guitar synths (no keys!) which they started using on Somewhere In Time with a clear intention to broaden their sound. Worked (!) , although my favourite album by them is probably still Powerslave.

Agree with you about the Camel's track About Iron Maiden I’m not familiar with their discography except the song called Paschendaele. I can't say it is a IM's deep cut However this is an awesome piece of music.
Thanks for IM advices , I'll check them :-)

The synth you mention is guitar synths (no keys!) which they started using on Somewhere In Time with a clear intention to broaden their sound. Worked (!) , although my favourite album by them is probably still Powerslave.
I'm sure you already know, but their cover of Nektar's "King of Twilight" surfaced on the bonus disc of EMI's 1995 reissue of Powerslave.

They are all still deep cuts in my opinion. Also, Cheyenne Anthem isn't really anymore well known than The Wall. Yes, you could say some of these are well known to most prog fans but you could say that about any song from a well known album and also ones others here have suggested. Anyway, it's all in good fun (or at least it should be).

Of course I'm right. I don't know if you have a hard time admitting that you're wrong or if you simply don't know what a deep cut is (you could always do a google search and find out). Either way your take is completely absurd.

I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

Don't know where it was released (or if it was at all) but here's a version of Iron Maiden playing Hocus Pocus by Focus (during the yodeling parts they just yell random gibberish which is hilarious).
I think it was a DVD special or something like that.

Great picks here particularly the two IM cuts and "Mudmen" from Floyd. The Hackett Song is alright, but I feel as though "Bad Girl," is pretty basic for Rainbow. IMO a much better deep cut by them is "Gates of Babylon," of Long Live Rock N' Roll. Its awesome and very progressive.

This great deep cut from Rainbow is the last song on the last album with Joe Lynn Turner as vocalist. Then Deep Purple reactivated.

Maiden's rendition of "Hocus Pocus" was a bonus audio track included on the DVD/CD single of "Different World" for Europe and Brazil only.

^ Entangled and The Camera Eye are great tracks , much admired and talked about. Not deep cuts in any way whatsoever. Alexander The Great is the centre peice of Maiden's (arguably) first prog album. I was told off for including Cinema earlier in the thread! (I also mentioned Whe The Tigers Broke Free. Only heard it for the first time on the Echoes complilation and was not originally included on The Final Cut but later appeared on reissues and the compilation)

^That's ok. I was told off for pretty much my entire post! Lol. I personally don't see how Entangled and Camera Eye aren't deep tracks unless we are talking just among the hardcore prog fanbase (which we all are anyway). But let's say for arguments sake they aren't deep cuts. In that case robbery, assault and battery and different strings (or maybe vital signs if we have to stick to the same album) would be better choices although not necessarily to Genesis and Rush fans!
