I know there are many others, but these are my fav Canterbury scene albums: what do you prefer? For me it's Rock Bottom, a bit forward Rotter's Club |

I'm a big fan of the Canterbury scene, but Rock Bottom is the only 5 star classic IMO, though National Health and Rotters Club come close. Most Canterbury albums were quite adventurous and experimental, and not everything worked, but I'd rather hear somebody take a few chances than play it safe. ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' I just wanted to indicate one album for each band/artist, with the only exception of Supersister, because I consider Present from Nancy and To the Highest Bidder at the same level...but I also have to say I don't like Ruth is Stranger Than Richard...  |

Robert Wyatt once said he prefers Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard to Rock Bottom, although he understands why Rock Bottom is so often seen as his masterpiece. IMO Ruth... is half a great album (side 1 of the original) and half a good album (side 2 with Soup Song and Sonia) - still a fine release but not as 'complete' as Rock Bottom. ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' another great Canterbury album that is missing is "Banana Moon" by Daevid Allen, though come to think of it "N' Existe Pas" by him is an excellent contender. his two best solo efforts, in my opinion. and how about Mother Gong's "Fairy Tales"? or Soft Machine's "Three"? ------------- A shot of me as High Priestess of Gaia during our fall festival. I'm just discovering a lot of the older Canterbury I didn't know
before, and I fell in love with both Egg's "The Polite Force" (how many ways can Dave Stewart make a Hammond sound incredible on one album?) and "The Little Red Record", for it's sheer mad audacity. Egg got my vote, but then I thought about how I've loved National Health for over 25 years, "Of Qeues and Cures" is also fantastic, but then the 2 Hatfield Albums are probably the most essential Canterbury...too much good choice here! |

Dear Baldjean, I easily admit there are many important absences from my list, the most important I think is Soft Machine in general, which I don't know very well and for what I know I find'em a bit boring...hope you'll forgive me! |

I love Caravan, in particular In The Land... and For Girls Who Grow... I like also the Hatfield and the North album. I have to explore this genre better, yet... |
