Barclay James Harvest are the featured artist this time around, as we Once Again list our favourite songs and albums and delve into the history of Barclay James Harvest and Other Short Stories. They're one of the few bands who've maintained the same core line-up over the years, consisting of, John Lees (guitar), Les Holroyd (bass), Woolly Wolstenholme (keyboards) and Mel Pritchard (drums). Who can forget the cute picture of Baby James Harvest poking his head out of a plant pot on their fourth album cover. Here at ProgArchives, Everyone is Everybody Else in the vast progosphere, where the classic albums of BJH appear like Time Honoured Ghosts. The eighth month of the year was October on the ancient Roman calendar, making it the perfect name for the eighth Barclay James Harvest album. The band took a short break, but weren't Gone to Earth for long before returning with their best-selling album of all time in 1977. In the XII Kingdoms of Prog, Barclay James Harvest reigned supreme and the Eyes of the Universe were upon them Once Again in 1982 for their Concert for the People in Berlin. This landmark gig for BJH preceded a Turn of the Tide in the Cold War when a Ring of Changes were on the way and the old Soviet leaders became Victims of Circumstance, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. For a brief moment in history, the world became a safer place with no more Face to Face Cold War confrontations between East and West with the ever-present threat of nuclear Armageddon hanging over the world. History didn't end in 1991 though, and in the prophetic words of Messrs Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Welcome to the Show that never ends, because there were new threats on the way in a new century. Caught in the Light of a beautifully clear morning on 11th September 2001, an airliner flew perilously low over New York City..... The River of Dreams would soon be shattered forever.
Simply list your Top 10 Barclay James Harvest albums below. then choose your favourite songs from each of those ten albums.
It's a virtually impossible task for me to list BJH's albums in order of preference, so I've taken the easy option by listing their ten classic 1970's albums in chronological order.

That's okay. Barclay James Harvest aren't For Everyone, but this song is For No One in particular.

I may get mocked for this, but I'm bending my own "rules" to return to their second album Once Again, just so I can include this classic song.

1. Everyone Is Everybody Else - Child of the Universe
2. Octoberon - Suicide?
3. North - One Leave
Those are the only BJH albums I own and I'm using faulty memory to pick the best songs as I haven't listened to any of these in maybe eight years (?).

Their 1974 Live album deserves a listen!

For this listener, they've only made 7 decent albums:
1. Turn of the Tide: In Memory of the Martyrs
2. Caught in the Light: The Great Unknown
3. Ring of Changes: Ring of Changes
4. Eyes of the Universe: The Song (They Love to Sing)
5. Welcome to the Show: Welcome to the Show
6. Gone to Earth: Spirit on the Water
7. Everyone is Everybody Else: Poor Boy Blues/Mill Boys
For those who haven't already guessed, I usually prefer Les Holroyd's songs to John Lees's songs!

This song (they love to sing) didn't quite make it onto my list, but it's on almost everyone and everybody else's list, so here it is.

...
Hi,
In the LIVE album the highlight belongs to the long cuts Summer Soldier and Medicine Man. And you should play them back to back and LOUD ... to enjoy it better!
A wonderful band, right from the start ... sadly neglected and thought of as a poor man's Moody Boors ... when in fact, BJH was much more honest and clear about their work, than the other band that became a joke!
In the end, no one has looked at how many times they did a show with an orchestra, and if that does not tell you how good their work is to be able to handle that ... you are not listening to music!

^ Poor Man's Moody Blues maybe, but I've never heard BJH referred to as "poor man's Moody Boors" before.

Hi,
Both bands went downhill after a while, so both kinda became a joke.
Best nick-name for BJH is Barclay James Harmless. Well deserved, most people know why...

^ Give me "Harmless" prog ballads any time. I don't like prog that's too challenging.

Hi,
Paul ... you STINK.
This thread ended up with me listening to BJH for at least 3 hours while it was over 100 degrees outside! I couldn't even go get under the sprinkler outside!

Barclay James Harmless? Not likely! Not when you've heard the magnificent Summer Soldier performed Live!

In chrono order (I wanted to include both of the first 2 live albums. Great live group)
Once Again - She Said, Mockingbird, or Galadriel
Everyone is Everybody Else - Child of the Universe. Paper Wings or Great 1974 Mining Disaster
Live - Medicine Man or After the Day
Time Honoured Ghosts - In My Life, Song for You, or Hymn for the Children
Octoberon - May Day or Ra
Gone to Earth - Hymn
Live Tapes - Poor Man's Moody Blues, One Night
XII - Closed Shop, Harbour, or Nova Lepidoptera
Ring of Changes - Looking from the Outside or Paraiso dos Cavalos
North (John Lees BJH) - On Leave
They had a few great early non album singles like "Early Morning" and "Poor Wages"

Not so "Harmless" after all - not when BJH perform such evergreen classics as "Child of the Universe", and not forgetting their other notable prog anthems, such as "Hymn", "In Memory of the Martyrs" and "Poor Man's Moody Blues"..... I could go on, so I will:- "Mocking Bird", Medicine Man", and "Titles" - the best tribute to The Beatles until the magical "Mystery Tour" by YES came along over forty years later.

Suicide? A strangely uplifting song, given the subject matter, but who else besides Barclay James Harvest could make a song about suicide sound cheerful?
