Subject: Your favourite New Wave albums?

Hereby a new wave of New Wave, as there already has been much talk about "New Wave" lately; but I think,
it's nice with a possibility to list ones own fave albums, so here it is. My understanding and definition of this genre
is much like the one of RYM's, except from not including New Romantics.
I can't say, it's one of my favourite genres, but I like more or less some albums, a couple even much (the Polish ones),
and they are:
The Police (UK) - Regatta de Blanc (1979)
Elvis Costello & The Atractions (UK) - Armed Forces (1979)
The Clash (UK) - London Calling(1979)
Ian Dury & The Blockheads (UK) - Laughter(1980)
Hazel O'Connor (UK) - Breaking Glass (1980)
Kliche (DK) - Okay Okay Boys (1982)
Lady Pank (PL) - Lady Pank(1983)
Gnags (DK) - X (1983)
Maanam (PL) - Nocny Patrol(1984)
Which are your favourites? And enjoy it!

I'll have to get back to you when I've finally wrapped up my series of New Wave polls at the end of the 1980's, but I can tell you that Blondie and the Pretenders will both feature in my list, as well as some New Romantic and Synth Pop favourites. My New Wave list definitely won't include any Punk Rock though, but I'm sure you knew that already.

I'll admit I use I use New Wave / Post-Punk as the genre and have little to no idea where one is supposed to draw the genre line. Here's ten favorites in that neighbourhood:
David Bowie - Lodger (1979)
Eurythmics - In the Garden (1981) New Order - Movement (1981) The Chameleons - Script Of The Bridge (1983) Siouxsie and The Banshees - Juju (1981) Lene Lovich - Stateless (1978) Modern English - After the Snow (1982) David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) (1980) Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle (1979) The Monochrome Set - Love Zombies (1980)

Great, and I'm glad of not to include any Punk, as I see it to be mostly a very different genre from New Wave.

The whole "new wave" is so confusing to begin with, it's what music came out in the aftermath of 70s punk and whatever new bands & artists that came out in the late 70s and early 80s, such as post punk (which is the father of gothic-rock I guess), synth-pop, power-pop, whatever Duran Duran is classified as , and so on...
Beyond mid 80s, I don't think we can talk about new wave though...
So yeah, it's all confusing with this genre.

Yes, I was uncertain whether to include both that one and several others. But I've seen them labeled New Wave many times, along with Post-Punk and Gothic Rock of course. I mean it's basically the same kind of music, but darker. Same goes for (early) The Cure. Whom I also considered, but left out. The way I see it the music by most of these slightly alternative groups played back then, fit in several places.

So how would you define New Wave, David? I find it hard to think about this because many of my favourites belong in the post punk category and we had a punk list thread pretty recently that then included post punk if I'm not mistaken. On the other hand how poppy can it get? Nik Kershaw?

All I can say is, I agree much with RYM's definition ( https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/new-wave/" rel="nofollow - https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/new-wave/ ) minus New Romantics, and their labeling in general, and quite exactly, I can only tell for albums I know well.

See, that's the thing... the term has been used by many people in many different ways. Some include punk, some include some punk and not other, some don't include punk (of course defining punk is another thing). Some very explicitly say that post punk and goth are their own genres, therefore not included, some say that post punk is fairly central to new wave. Much stuff without synthesizers was originally included and the very first examples have little or no synth, but later synthesizers became something of a key ingredient apparently. (Acts like Ultravox or Joy Division/New Order started with very clear punk roots and mostly without electronics and then became very much synthpop. Maybe that's the central story.)

OK, here's a list of albums tagged New Wave by rym. Occasionally I find myself surprised by what has the badge and what doesn't, but anyway... I' m not going to list King Crimson, tag or not.
The Comsat Angels - Waiting for a Miracle, Land (their essential Sleep No More is Dark Wave but not New Wave)
Killing Joke - Brighter than a Thousand Suns (maybe not their best either but has the right tag)
Joe Jackson - Look Sharp, Night and Day
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
The Cure (not listed as none of my favourites of them has the right tag; if we count Darkwave there should also be Joy Division)
Thomas Dolby - The Flat Earth, The Golden Age of Wireless
Mona Mur - Into Your Eye
Nik Kershaw - Human Racing, The Riddle
Japan - Tin Drum
Best albums tagged as Neue Deutsche Welle (new German wave):
Joachim Witt - Edelweiss
Fehlfarben - 33 Tage in Ketten
Scala 3 - Scala
Spliff - 85555

It's not confusing once you dig into it.
The term basically applies to any pop oriented bands that kept a punk attitude only focused on catchy pop hooks rather than punk ferocity or the experimental arty approach of post-punk (of course there was much crossover between punk, post-punk and new wave.)
Often associated with synthesizers and synth-pop the term also encompassed pop punk, 2Tone, Pop Reggae, some jangle pop, the new romantic sound, the most poppy sounds of zolo and post-punk, power pop and other styles.
The term is still used for newer acts but i agree that it is better reserved for the era of the late 70s and early 80s since in effect it is so diverse.
I made a fave new wave album list on RYM years ago.
It's not up to date and i need to add new albums.

Agree to a certain extent. The term kinda drifted beyond its original meaning for sure. In the case of Duran Duran and Tears For Fears they did exhibit some punk guitar moves on their first two albums.
Bands like ABC and Spandau Ballet, they were what's now called New Romantic and Sophisti-pop. I honestly don't know how those styles weaseled their way into the new wave scene but everyone seems to consider them new wave these days.
Orignally new wave referred to punk rock itself so the term continued to expand past its original parameters which is what makes it so confusing for everyone!
Why are Dexys Midnight Runners new wave and U2 not?

Never been a fan of punk rock and connected attitudes ( sniffin' glue, safety pin, pogo-ing, spiting/vomiting at other attendees during gigs or simply paying priced tix for 1/2h long concert) But the post punk era and the following 'new-wave' brought their share of good surprises :
The Chameleons : Script of the bridge (with its so prog-like cover art) Japan : Tin drum Japan : Gentlemen take polaroids Magazine : Secondhand daylight Magazine : The correct use of soap XTC : Drums and Wires XTC : English Settlement XTC : Black Sea Joy Division : Closer Joy Division : Atmosphere (EP) The Comsat Angels : Sleep no more Talking Heads : Fear of music Talking Heads : Remain in light Eyeless in Gaza : Caught in flux Echo and The Bunnymen : Crocodile Echo and The Bunnymen : Heaven up here Echo and The Bunnymen : Porcupine A Certain Ratio : Sextet ( with the single Knives slit water) Gang of Four : Solid Gold ( with the killer 'Paralyzed) The Durutti Column : LC Ultravox : Vienna Ultravox : Vienna EP with Herr X ... Lot were from Manchester and belonged to The Factory
I still have some and give them a spin from time to time

Even the title of Nocny Patrol, which means Night Patrol, and maybe the artwork too, refers to the time of martial law
introduced in Poland in the beginning of 1980s with the purpose of oppressing Solidarnosc, the free trade union and
political movement. - But what is most supprising is the fact that it was not only possible to get these albums released,
but also to sell in very large numbers.

RYM is superior to PA in many ways but one of its weaknesses is that anybody can tag any album and i've found quite a few mistagged albums the debut by Maanam being one of them. I guess if you really stretch it it's new wave but to me it was too raw and should only be post-punk.

You're not wrong but Talking Heads and Devo are archtypical american New Wave - and certainly not the poppiest. It's primarely their quirky weirdness-factor that make them New Wave - while it's the pop-element (and occasional synths) that counts the most for a band like Blondie. Different rules for differnt bands really. Early Elvis Costello is unmistakably rock, although a sort of brainy one.

Hello ladies and gentlemen
I ask your forgiveness in advance, and I hope you will have patience with me for what might sound like a stupid quest to some of you. I would also like to ask your forgiveness in case this is the wrong subsection of the forum to make this post in. Forgive me for reviving an older thread as well, but I consider this band New Wave all the way through.
I'll get straight to it:
I have always had a great interest in music throughout my life, and I find myself desiring to make a contribution to this great art, by pouring my time and efforts into promoting my favorite band of all time: Kliché (also sometimes known as Kliche).
I know musical preferences are personal, but to me, Kliche/Kliché is/was the greatest band in the world. That's why I'd like to exert some of my energy in the pursuit of preserving their legacy, not just in my own country, but also on an international scale. Their career as a band was very brief, but what they released during those few years of activity were two flawless and creatively explosive albums. Their live performances were great as well.
I recently took the first step in my journey, and went ahead and translated all of the lyrics from their officially released songs into English. I then went on to create lyric videos with these translated lyrics for an international audience. I would like to share these songs here, for the benefit of those of you who are unfamiliar with this band, and for whom this might be akin to discovering an unknown gem. For convenience, I've arranged the songs into playlists that correspond with the tracklists of the albums that the band released. I've also created a compilation playlist that combines all of their releases into a single playlist.
In 2006, a commission appointed by the Danish government were given the task to single out culturally significant works of art. They included Kliché's first studio album (Supertanker, 1980) on a list meant to reflect the most important musical compositions in Danish history and culture. The list comprises 12 musical compositions in total, and Kliché's debut album takes up one spot on this list. Their other releases are just as good, in my opinion.
Here is a short excerpt, briefly explaining a bit about the band and their sound and expression, taken from Wikipedia:
"Kliché was a Danish rock band from Aarhus, known for their avant-garde and postmodern musical style. In performance, the group wore uniforms or overalls in order to reflect a factory, even going so far as to use a metal grinder as an instrument. They ironically quoted Mao Zedong and Buddha in several of their songs and frequently made politically charged music. Their first album Supertanker entered the Danish Culture Canon in 2006 because of its influential status and expression of emerging post-modernity in early 1980's Denmark.
Together, the group's postmodern and new wave style was influenced by rock artists of the era such as Kraftwerk, David Bowie, Roxy Music and Brian Eno. In performance, they wore white boilersuits, likely influenced or inspired by the group DEVO, which had been performing with a similar uniform.
The band was formed in 1977 by Anders Brill, Lars H.U.G., Jens Valo, and Johannes Voss (Johannes Møller). The group's original members met while studying at the Aarhus Art Academy. Nils Torp, Steffen Brandt, and Hilmer Hassig later played with the group as well. The group effectively dissolved after Lars H.U.G. left in 1985, though other members continued to collaborate under the name Voss/Torp/Brill and later Voss/Torp.
Their debut album, Supertanker, was released in 1980 by Medley Records. As a work of social commentary, the supertanker was used by the band as a symbol of mass consumption. The album provides commentary on consumerism and is critical of prevailing political ideologies. In particular, their song "Masselinjen" is a direct and obvious commentary on Mao Zedong's mass line. It is a ten minute long piece with only one lyric: a direct quote from Mao stating “the people, and the people alone, are the motive force in the making of world history” (Danish: “Folket og kun folket er drivkraften i skabelsen af verdenshistorien”). While Danish rock of the era was often politically charged, Supertanker was a revolutionary work of social commentary because it employed ambiguous lyrics and ambient sounds to communicate its message. The album's musical style was pioneering in its use of exposed synthesizer sounds, distorted guitar, instrumental pop, and an overall focus on atmospheric tonal quality rather than pure melody. The album was formally entered in the Danish Culture Cannon in 2006 for its unique impact on the Danish post-modern movement during the 1980s.
Kliché's second album, Okay Okay Boys, was released in 1982 under the same label. The album was a stylistic continuation of their first, with similarly socially critical lyrics. Production began soon thereafter on a third album, but this was never completed. The band in effect dissolved in 1985 when Lars Hug left the group to pursue a solo career. The remaining members of the band continued to collaborate under different names during the late 1980s. A compilation album, De Samlede Klichéer, was released in 2010."

If anyone is interested, I can also send you links to the very scarce live performance footage that I am familiar with (audio and video bootlegs, as well as professional recordings). I can also send you links to official music videos.
Without further ado, here are the links to the playlists with lyric videos that I've created:
Two songs from Pære Punk ("Pære Punk" was a Danish compilation album, featuring various Danish punk bands. This compilation album was originally released in April, 1979. The album featured 20 tracks in total, with only two tracks contributed by Kliché. I've collected those two Kliché tracks here.)
If you don't want to listen to an entire album just to see if you'd be into the music, here are a few songs to give you a small sampling.
Militskvinder ("Militia Women"), from Supertanker:
Havets Blå ("The Ocean's Blue"), from Supertanker:
Masselinjen (sometimes also spelled "Masselinien", meaning "The Mass Line"), from Supertanker:
Bag De Røde Bjerge ("Behind the Red Mountains"), from Okay Okay Boys:
Pil På Himlen ("Arrow in the Sky"), from Okay Okay Boys:
Brændende Kakler ("Burning Tiles", referring to the tiles that comprise part of the Space Shuttle thermal protection system), from Okay Okay Boys:
Disclaimer: I've translated the lyrics from Danish into English. I am an amateur translator with no professional experience, and I don't hold any degrees in either language. I am a huge fan of the band, and I simply wanted the English speaking world to be able to get a sense of what message the lyrics are conveying. I've tried to stay as close to the literal meaning as possible, but minor adjustments were necessary due to the differences in syntax and expression between the two languages.

Despite my age and when I first got into music I don't own much new wave and was never really into it much. That said here's a few albums I've always liked:
A Flock of Seagulls - Same
Duran Duran - Rio
The Cars - Same, Heartbeat City, Candy O and Shake it up (never heard Panorama)
The Police - Zenyetta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity
Rush - Signals (a little bit anyway)
The Pretenders - Learning to crawl
Violent Femmes - Same
The Fixx - Reach The Beach
Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
Maybe some others too. I cheated a little bit by looking at others answers.

I was more a fan of individual tracks than whole albums in this genre
limiting to at most one album per artist, in no particular order, including what I would more call synth pop and post punk, but whatever
Ultravox - Quartet (nothing as better than the song Vienna but as an album I prefer this one)
Simple Minds - New Gold Dream
Buggles - Age of Plastic
China Crisis - Flaunt the Imperfection
Joy Division - Closer
Red Box - The Circle and the Square
Thompson Twins - Into The Gap
Greg Kihn - Next of Kihn
Prefab Sprout - Two Wheels Good
Ian Gomm - Gomm with the Wind

Most of the post 1985-albums here is absurd to label New Wave. It mostly died out sometime in the mid-eighties, and the bands still active that were once associated with it - had moved on.

It may seem so but the term is still used for bands that use the retro sounds of that era
Up to 1990 is legit because certain parts of the world didn't join the party until the mid-80s
I agree that by 1985 the actual movement died out but the term for the musical styles that were referred to as new wave continued to be called that

There will always be latecomers to whatever genre. And they are not represented on Paul's list of favorites. Where there's mainly a bunch of albums from bands that used to be New Wave - or somewhere in that neighborhood. Also every single style ever gets ressurected at some point, but that's not what this is about. Rockabilly got it's revival during the New Wave-era, but that doesn't change the fact that it originally died - or changed into something else as early as in the late 1950's.

The term New Wave is a rather nebulous one. I'm not sure why Rockabilly revival such as The Stray Cats were included in that at all to be honest. Mostly New Wave refers to angsty pop tunes that feature some punk guitar moves and slick videos. Many of the synthpop bands like OMD and New Order continued this into the 90s even once the initial craze died off about 1985-ish. It's not an exact science. I gave up on that long ago. It's open to a lot of interpretation so i've learned just to roll with it. Paul is famous however for adding totally unrelated artists to genre lists though. Even artists in the New Wave years like R.E.M. aren't considered New Wave even though they kinda are. Go figure!

^That wasn't the reason I used 1980's Rockabilly-revival as an example. I don't think they were ever considered New Wave either. But they've were linked to Post-Punk in retrospect because of their updated punk attitude to their Rock 'n Roll.
Anyway... I think you got the point of my original comment. Essentially I reacted to Psych Pauls list of "favorite new wave albums 1980-1990" because the second half of the decade felt short on actual New Wave albums. If one's not an expert of underground obscurities, or deeply into late to the scene-countries from behind the Iron Curtain or something like that, there's very little albums out there in that period that aren't better described using other labels than New Wave. (New Order were probably some kind of New Wave till 1986, but most of the rest here had either polished and commercialized their sound or gone alternative rock in one way or another). I'm not certain what I'm discussing anymore.

I was more a fan of individual tracks than whole albums in this genre
limiting to at most one album per artist, in no particular order, including what I would more call synth pop and post punk, but whatever
Ultravox - Quartet (nothing as better than the song Vienna but as an album I prefer this one)
Simple Minds - New Gold Dream
Buggles - Age of Plastic
China Crisis - Flaunt the Imperfection
Joy Division - Closer
Red Box - The Circle and the Square
Thompson Twins - Into The Gap
Greg Kihn - Next of Kihn
Prefab Sprout - Two Wheels Good
Ian Gomm - Gomm with the Wind
I agree, these Synth/Electro Pop bands got lumped in with the new wave genre at first. It wasn't till a little later there seemed to be a concerted effort to give them their own space.

I don't think I liked anything that was called 'New Wave' that much. The original British punk scene was interesting because it had so much energy. At the time (1977) this was The Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Stranglers, The Jam, The Motors, The Clash (what was all this having to have 'The' before the name?!) etc. Then a bunch of other stuff surfaced that was supposedly more interesting but generally not. I liked some of the electronic bands that came out between 1980 and 1983 (OMD, Gary Numan, Visage) Ultravox started out earlier with John Foxx so can't count them.
Virtually the only albums I purchased that could possibly be included were Tubeway Army - Replicas and Simple Minds - Sparkle In The Rain (both really good). At the time I was busy collecting classic prog albums so didn't spare much thought for a lot of this stuff. Always thought that IQ's first 2 albums had a bit of a punk meets prog feel to them and some of the guys in the band were sporting a punk influenced spikey hair look!

For right now, I'll say "Robert Fripp - Exposure"
I used to play bass in several new wave bands, let's say I'd had enough of that!

I'd never have thought of them as New Wave but great they were (also Martyn Bates' solo work).

I doubt the user who asked about "poppers" had that in mind.

That's the ONLY meaning the term has when popper is in the pural.
The way it was asked it's obvious to me that's EXACTLY what was being implied
