Television - Marquee Moon

even I definitely think more of it as Art Punk than New Wave.

I'm also fond of

Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bullocks...  (Punk Rock)

Strange, but interesting list... Paul, looking at the relatively low ratings you give to quite a bunch of these albums, I guess this is based upon some ranking, somewhere - care to share the source?
Bowie will probably garner many votes here, but I will vote for Ian Dury here - this man deserves some more airplay!

That, I understand. But the list, apparently, isn't (because why oh why would anyone want to present a list of albums of which almost half of them he/she doesn't like?). Hence my question.

I guessed I probably wouldn't like half of the albums in the poll, but I didn't know for sure until I listened to them all recently. I have a feeling the albums will get better though - at least from my point of view - when we reach the 1980's. The only six albums I'd heard previously in this poll were the two David Bowie albums from his Berlin trilogy, the first two albums by Ultravox, Brian Eno's Before and After Science album and Blondie's second album (released in Japan in December 1977 and the rest of the world in early 1978).

^ and ^^ Clearly, my question wasn't clear: Paul, did you base this list of albums for this poll on some existing ranking/listing somewhere or is it a list of your own concoction?

Yes, I cobbled together the list of albums from multiple sources, just like most of my other polls, and all of the ratings are my own, so you know who to blame. Tongue

^ I was curious too, that info gives context, and the process to me is often more interesting than the results. On another note, to give more context for the ratings, how much of those two star albums did you listen to? I rarely give out two stars because I rarely persevere with albums that would get less than three form me (I have listened to many songs that I don't like, but I avoid albums that I don't expect to like and don't persevere if very little seems to appeal). I know at times you have mentioned only listening to very little of music that you rate lowly.

Ultimately it's between three albums on this list: Low, Heroes and Marquis Moon. Went Low for a higher percentage one might say (really because of how much I like it as I often do support the underdog, or diamond dogs).

Quite a bit of New Wave was already around in 77 apparently, but I don't connect that well to the majority of these. Many of these have better albums later, for me that is. Low and Marquee Moon may be better than most on this list but I still don't rate them as highly as apparently most others. I like Heroes quite a bit more than Low, and it would've snatched my vote, were it not for the cool Eno album (the Bowie albums are of course also partly Eno albums, so my favourites are pretty much all Eno).

^^Correct me if I'm wrong, Paul. I don't believe he listens to the entire album, only snippets.

The same applies to me too. I didn't persevere with any of the two star albums in the poll - when five minutes was about all I could stand - and that's especially true in the case of the Sex Pistols - one of the most overrated bands in the world in my view. Anyway, things can only get better from hereon - to paraphrase D:Ream. Smile

I may backtrack and do a pre-1977 New Wave poll, mainly so I can include the first two New Wave albums by Eno as well as the early albums by Sparks and the debut album by Blondie from 1976. Oh, and not forgetting Bowie's Diamond Dogs too, following a handy reminder by Logan. Thumbs Up

On the subject of Sparks, I have a feeling their debut "Halfnelson" from 1971 may have been the very first New Wave album, unless anyone knows differently. Smile

Agreed! The quintessential anarcho-punk album of the ages. Although punk was considered new wave at the time, these days it's not so i wouldn't include it on this poll.

For anyone interested i recently updated my New Wave list on RYM and added HUNDREDS of new artists. It's possibly the most comprehensive list on the entire interweb.

Don't worry. The punk image of The Queen was enough to put me off, without listening to the godawful racket on the video too. Thumbs Down

As Silly Puppy says though, it was the quintessential punk album of the era, so I couldn't very well leave it out of the poll, much as I would've liked to. Ouch

Actually, it was the queen image and the lyrics that could worry me on your behalf, but we just look very differently on the whole matter here, as I find this song as one of the very best Rock depictions of some social conditions and reactions to them.

The Jam's second album is called This Is The Modern World btw.

They're the best band here but they really took off with their next album All Mod Cons, so it's between Mr Dury and Talking Heads  for me.

I've encountered much bigger jokes here just this week. Breaking Glass, What In The World, Sound And Vision, Always Crashing In The Same Car, Be My Wife... all have that approach to rock that I associate with New Wave. Or really, what was to become known as New Wave. I don't think there many New Wave/Post-Punk bands not inspired by his so called Bowie Trilogy.
