Topic: In & out of PA faves: starting 2023 & moving downPosted By: Logan
Subject: In & out of PA faves: starting 2023 & moving down
Date Posted: May 15 2023 at 15:33
Yearly album favourites, in album in PA and one not...
This topic is meant go down as far as you waish to or as modern as you like. I set it to start with 2023 to 2018 so as not to be too intimidating. Then I though we would move down to earlier years in later post as a sort of communal exercise but keeping it all to one topic.
I did a much longer list, but decided to split it into different posts over time. I just was going to do five years, 2022 to 2018, as 2023 is still quite new, but then I thought that I might as well include 2023. I think Komsicher Laufer's 2023 album is my fave in PA so far, but as I go down to earlier years, I want to avoid duplicating band/artist names and I have KL for 2013.
In each of these yearly pairs, the first option is in PA and the second is not.
2023: Amoeba Split - Quiet Euphoria 2023: Yo La Tengo - This Stupid World
2022: black midi - Hellfire 2022: Weyes Blood - And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow
2021: Squid - Bright Green Field 2021: otay:onii - Ming Ming
2020: Cisnienie / Lód 9 - Brass Album 2020: Eartheater - Phoenix: Flames Are Dew Upon My Skin
2019: PoiL - Sus 2019: Lingua Ignota - Caligula
2018: Anna von Hausswolff - Dead magic 2018: Julia Holter - Aviary
What about you?
EDIT: Whatever, probably won't be a challenge many would want to take up.
I completed down to 2007 earlier. Might as well edit those in.
2017: Yolk - Solar 2017: Aquaserge - Laisse ça être 2016: David Bowie - Blackstar 2016: Bruno Pernadas - Those Who Throw Objects at the Crocodiles Will Be Asked to Retrieve Them 2015: Alio Die & Lorenzo Montana - Holographic Codex 2015: Gongjoong Doduk - Gongjoong Doduk 2014: Swans - To Be Kind 2014: Matt Berry - Music for Insomniacs 2013: Kosmischer Läufer - Volume One 2013: Chelsea Wolfe - Pain Is Beauty (2013) 2012: Susanne Sundfør - The Silicone Veil 2012: Melody's Echo Chamber - Melody's Echo Chamber 2011: North Sea Radio Orchestra - I a Moon 2011: The Necks - Mindset 2010: Univers Zero - Clivages 2010: Connan Mockasin - Please Turn Me Into the Snat 2009: Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré 2009: Natural Snow Buildings - Daughter of Darkness 2008: Elephant9 - Dodovoodoo 2008: Portishead - Third 2007: William D. Please mention as many or as few yearly pairings as you wish. I would rather people start with 2023 and work their way down but if that is too hard, you can go to any years with one in PA and one not in PA.

2018

That's all right by me, and actually, I haven't even found any Prog albums I could like, so far. The most recent, and entirely new found, is from 2016. - Not that I've been looking so much, for what ever reason.

^ I appreciate their comments here, actually, and it's relevant to the subject. I am interested if people can come up with such pairings, especially when it comes to contemporary music. I will be going down the years (modern days was just the jumping off point), and I expect that we all have years when we can make pairings, even if we had to go down to the 80s or 70s to do so. One can do which yearly parings one can. My next pairs list here will likely go down to 1990 or so.

Thanks Greg. It's nice to be appreciated, even if I can't always contribute to your polls, but at least I'll have plenty of non-prog favourites to choose from for the 70's, 80's & 90's.

Hi,
The year, for me, was never important or indicative of anything. This is my view of the arts, and specially film, where the minute you think this is great, a film from nowhereville is Venus makes you feel stupid.
Music for me, is "eternal", thus a year is not better than the other, and neither is one album better than the other, since for me, it's about the artist and his/her artistry ... and the same goes for film. I do have some "favorites" in film, but these tend to be more about what I see and don't see than they are preferences. I like Godard, because I can see how you can tell the USC Film School to go merde itself! I like Gilliam, because he likes to tell the producers and the studios to get fudged, and still do the picture he sees in his head, even when he knows that he IS "don Quixote" all over again ... a story that most of us will never read since Spanish Literature is just like most stuff these days ... no one reads that on kindle! I like Kurosawa, because no one "paints" the screen as well ... and the same goes for Lean. I like Roeg, because few of them ever used music correctly, and ended up "inventing" MTV without us knowing it ... no one ... here or not ... has seen the piece done on "Performance" that according to Anita Pallenberg, was the character/person that Mick became after that and carried it all his life in front of the microphone.
To me, it's not the preferences ... it's the bits and pieces that just blow your ideas out completely ... and you learn quickly that having "ideas" is not only STUPID, it is also a gross time wasting concept ... which we always think is more important than sliced bread!
this is my "attraction" to art history, be it in literature, film, theater, music or painting ... the ones that gave you a new vision and sight that no one could before ... and they did it by "telling" the status quo to take a hike, and we have to learn to do that better!
Loved a lot of that listing, but again, it confused me more than it helped, because I really don't care that "Wolf City" is from 1972 ... it could just as easily be 2012 ... and still be a great album, and to me that is the measure of greatness.

I've already heard two outstanding songs from Mirror to the Sky, so I'm sure I won't be disappointed with the album as a whole, but then again, I'm easily pleased.

^ Calling those lyrics awful is the understatement of the year. ;)
I went down to 2007 before, here I am going down to 1990. I decided not to exclude multiple albums by the same band for my list (never an expectation for others) even if I avoided somewhat still. I am really into Boards of Canada, and so that gets represented here. I would have like to do another Broadcast, and in PA, more Pram, more Swans and more may things. Other people's list can be as long or short on years as they like when it comes to this one in and one out of PA yearly album exercise.

Hi,
The year, for me, was never important or indicative of anything. This is my view of the arts, and specially film, where the minute you think this is great, a film from nowhereville is Venus makes you feel stupid.
And yet I thought you've argued about understanding art from a historical context, and thinking about the impact it made at the time. If you mean the very specific year you don't pay much attention to, then fine. The period is important, as art is impacted by things going on in the world, and chronology is important in art because art is impacted by earlier art. The time gives context. I was a listening to an album released last year yesterday, and it references COVID-!9 restrictions, but that thinking are improving. Knowing when it cam out gives it more context lyrically. The music itself is still rather timeless (or hard to define the time) to my ears.
Moshkito wrote:

When you say music is eternal, do you mean more in a Platonic theory of forms way? For me all years that I have delved into music from are worthwhile, and it's not really about better or worse (not the way I tend to think). When someone says such and such a year or decade sucked for music, my first thought is that they have not explored deeply enough and perhaps their tastes and experiences are just too narrow and over time if they are open-eared and open-minded and exploratory, that opinion might very well change. There are some years, of course, where I know and love more music and some years, decades, centuries where I know no music. Even is music is somehow eternal, I unfortunately am not eternal (or immortal) in a way that I could hope to experience all times of it, and I am stuck in a rather darned linear perception of time and existence for myself. Perhaps in a way, all things of all apparent times exist simultaneously -- at the least I like to take a holistic view of things, but I digress.
I'm interested in the artist and the artistry (as with other tings) at particular points of time as well as overall. Artists go through different phases, they are people too, and people change. Experiences shape and influence us. Events, history shape us. Considering the time does not depreciate from the artistry for me, and in fact the opposite.

I think I'm not quite following your thesis now. Lots of ideas are stupid, though, or stupidly expressed. I don't mean that in a snarky way in case it comes off that way. I have been accused of gross stupidity when it comes to my ideas many time (mostly by my wife, I take no offence).

Oh, well at least we both do like history and I am of the simple opinion being a simple temporal man that years and chronology are historically including artistically significant, and I put much weight on causality.

Loved a lot of that listing, but again, it confused me more than it helped, because I really don't care that "Wolf City" is from 1972 ... it could just as easily be 2012 ... and still be a great album, and to me that is the measure of greatness.
It's not really supposed to help. And even if Wolf City sounds like it might be more contemporary, it is very significant to me that it isn't. Some of my favourite music actually pretends to be projects from the past (Kosmisher Laufer and Klaus Morlock especially). They built a historical background story to go along with the music because the time when the music was made according to the fictitious story is important to the creation and context of the music.
Music influences and inspires other music. If B was result of A, which led to C, then D, then of course it matters when A came out. Recognising causality is not only important to historians, it's important to survival. Whether someone remembers the specific year some album came out, generally that is not of so much interest to me. I expect most recognise 1969 as the year of our King Crimson's Court... If it was as seminal an album as is claimed, and even if not, when it came out is important as it led to other albums and some say that it sparked or helped spark a movement. If it came out today it would not be as highly regarded in all likelihood. Let's say that In the Wake of Poseidon ended up being Crimson's debut, now Court might be considered a retro take on that album and it would not have the historical weight. Especially for a determinist like me, when something happened/ came out is of a great deal of interest to me and is clearly important.
Using years like this is a way to organise the exercise. What is of interest to me is seeing people's contemporaneous likes that are in PA and not in PA. Such comparisons have long been of interest to me.
Anyway, post your own list or not, either is fine by me. I'm glad that various people seem to appreciate the exercise and have followed the topic expectations. I love tangents, but one can sometimes get so distracted that the topic becomes a total confusing mess. Reading all of this would confuse more than one person I expect.

Yes, correct. This thread just was intended to start with the years 2023-2018 so as not to be overly intimidating. I will try to amend the title to make this clearer. That said, i had wanted to before but there is limited space in the title (hopefully people will also look at the OP).

Of course I know that Talk Talk is in PA, it's practically the Talk of the town. Slint is a clerical error from not being careful when making the list. I thought just now that maybe I'll replace it with Mercury Rev but that also is in Prog Related. I do like and have Enya's Shepard's Moon in my old collection (I used to listen to her a lot in the early to mid 90s). Oh, I remember, I had wanted to go with Tuxedomoon''s Ghost Sonata. Tuxedomoon is not in PA, although it is one that certinaly could be imo, even though it has been rejected (can't remember why).

My original conception for this topic was that instead of doing it in separate topics we would slowly roll-out certain years (say once a week) and then move onto another so we are working on the same years. Mirakaze's yearly Prog album lists were very successful and became a communal event in a way that I guess this could not become when doing it this way, but I like to build on things and keep them together in one place to make reference easier. I did a lot of yearly polls to help me, but I haven't wanted to go back through those as I do like to do fairly fresh lists generally each time as I continue to discover music from different times and the new discoveries often excite me more.
I have plowed ahead of others too much, and trickling them in would have been better, but I am not the most patient person when it comes to such exercises. I do hope more will continue with the list and others will add lists (for whatever years if they can't start from the modern times). I have barely slept for days, and I do like to make lists during my nights of insomnia.
To continue with my yearly listings, here is the weighty for me and hatey for some others 80s. It is hard to choose just one from PA in each years as there are so many I like. Other than Cocteau Twins who have a number of 80s albums I love, it is harder for me to find many 80s out-of-PA albums that I love. Phew I once suggested for PA (and deleted it much later). In fact a lot that I mention that is not in PA I do not think really would be out of place in PA as progressive music acts more on the fringes of the greater prog umbrella rather than more traditional notions of Prog genre music (like The Flower Kings). Some I could suggest, and might well find success, but I just don't really care to especially because I like making topics like this and the more in PA the harder it is to do so. ;)
1989: Cardiacs - On Land and in the Sea 1989: The Cure - Disintegration
1988: Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Symphonic Suite AKIRA 1988: Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll
1987: Swans - Children of God 1987: The Lounge Lizards - No Pain for Cakes
1986: Camberwell Now - The Ghost Trade 1986: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Your Funeral ... My Trial
1985: Kate Bush - Hounds of Love 1985: Tuxedomoon - Holy Wars
1984: Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance 1984: Cocteau Twins - Treasure
1983: Art Zoyd - Les espaces inquiets 1983: Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels
1982: Laurie Anderson - Big Science 1982: Yasuaki Shimizu - Kakashi
1981: Eskaton - 4 Visions 1981: Phew - Phew
1980: Art Zoyd - Génération sans futur 1980: Douji Morita - Un, deux, trois
I had originally thought to maybe not repeat artist/band names or at least very little, but I subsequently mostly threw that to the wind (some like Art Zoyd and Swans I am tempted to repeat more).

Just seven more years for now off whatever pairings tickle my fancy at the moment:
1979: The Residents - Eskimo 1979: Tubeway Army - Replicas
1978: Bubu - Anabelas 1978: Nina Hagen Band - Nina Hagen Band
1975: Cos - Postaeolian Train Robbery 1975: Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú
1974: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom 1974: Janko Nilovic - Rythmes Contemporains
1973: Can - Future Days 1973: Mandingo - The Primeval Rhythm of Life
-----------------------------
I do think this might have worked better had I done it another way. All one in PA one not in PA lists and comments on the selections whomever they come from are appreciated. I wanted to combine all of our lists into one at some time and then maybe add songs to go with each albums for a helluva hella long playlist.

Thanks y'all.
Mirakaze, I definitely have ones to listen to from you list. It's nice for me to see our snaps (same choices) Radiohead - Kid A (or as we say in Canada, Kid Eh), Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children and Cocteau Twins - Heaven Or Las Vegas (those are a few that I particularly love, and all have had a lot of play over the past year from me). Mr. Bungle - California I almost went with, but then changed my mind rather impetuously for some reason.
Lewian, we have one snap with Blackstar, I would have happily gone with The Seer and I was going to go with Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell, but I'm quite fickle.
Fantastic about the Swans concert! Their tagline could be "Swans, now beggar than ever!" Dad jokes....
---------------------------------
I could have easily gone for so many different ones, and in a couple of cases I wanted to highlight a rather lesser known album that I have treasured.
1972: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches 1972: Ennio Morricone - Cosa avete fatto a Solange?*
1971: Igor Wakhévitch - Docteur Faust 1971: Egisto Macchi - I futuribili
1970: Magma - Kobaïa 1970: Exuma - Exuma
1969: E̤a̤s̤t̤ O̤f E̤d̤e̤n̤ - M̤e̤r̤c̤a̤t̤o̤r̤ Pr̤o̤je̤c̤t̤e̤d̤ 1969: Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
1968: The United States of America - The United States of America 1968: Nico - The Marble Index
1967: Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 1967: The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico
1966: The Incredible String Band - The Incredible String Band 1966: Love - Da Capo
1965: Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage 1965: John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
* archival release the next decade, but that is the year of the film for the soundtrack

1988:

include movie soundtracks, but I just had to listen to it again after
seeing it on Greg's list and remind myself of how good it is)

^ Thanks, Mira. That and Osorezan (I suggested it to PA esecially for that album) are especially special to me. That Akira one definitely stands on its own to me. My other most treasured album in your list is Cocteau Twins' Treasure but plenty I like. I'm listening to Katra Turana - Kimera now, I do have a thing for Japanese arts, and really enjoying it -- fun cabaret-like music with wonderful chamber prog qualities.

Since I did an album in and out of PA (so two per year) from 2023 to 1965 (1965 seemed a good year to stop for me), I will start on a second list. I was thinking about waiting for the release of Swans' The Beggar, in June 2023 (heard some of the album already as that has been released, but I don't know how much I will like it or how long to really grow on me) and IU really like this KL album anyway. Maybe the Swans will make my third?
I hope to compile our lists into something elegant at some time - maybe a youtube video with music samples and commentary from your humble narrator and little droog friend, that is me, Logan deGreg, or maybe I'll print them out and make a papier mâché sculpture. It will be artistic anyway, hopefully, however I go about it.
The first listed for year is in PA, the second for that year is not.
2023: Kosmischer Läufer - Volume Five 2023: ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT - Darling the Dawn (my most recent new-to-me album interest. https://allhandsmakelight.bandcamp.com/album/darling-the-dawn" rel="nofollow - bandcamp page
2022: The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention 2022: Pan Daijing - Tissues
2021: black midi - Cavalcade 2021: Lingua Ignota - Sinner Get Ready
2020: Aksak Maboul - Figures 2020: The Necks - Three
2019: Cisnienie - JazzArt Underground 2019: Vanishing Twin - The Age of Immunology\
2018: Klaus Morlock - The Three Faces of Janice 2018: Mid-Air Thief - Crumbling
Daunting, but I hope people keep their lists coming for whatever years they can. And the list can be as long or as short as you like.

^ Thanks, Mira, there are plenty of excellent albums on your list per my tastes. It is a big task to cover so many years and it is very much appreciated.
I considered and almost went with Henry Cow's Western Culture, National Health's st, and Soft Machine's Third. It can be quite arbitrary when there are many I love, but those all-time standout albums for me.
Romantic Warrior is the big one of which I had a very different impression. maybe I will appreciate it more now as it has been almost two decades since I last listened to it (2005, I think). I love lots of JRF and that is a lauded album that I really disliked. We do share some 60s jazz choices with A Love Supreme, Empyrean Isles, and Black Saint. :)

^The Yes album is not yet released. How do you know it's your favorite, Paul?
You're right. That was a speculative vote for YES, but Zopp's Dominion album has since replaced Mirror to the Sky as my favorite album of 2023.
