2. AMOEBA SPLIT Quiet Euphoria
3. MICE ON STILTS I Am Proud of You.
4. DEPOSED KING One Man's Grief
5. ZOPP Dominion
On Sunday night I just did my first radio show of the year featuring music from 2023 releases. Had fun playing double shots from all of the above albums. It's already been a good year!
The Light album is really interesting, never heard anything quite like it.
Also glad I'm not the only one enjoying the Atsuko Chiba.

I feel like it's been an exceptionally strong year already, especially compared to last year. Off the top of my head I'd go for, in no particular order:
Oiapok - OisoLün
Fistfights with Wolves - The Sheep That Eats The Wolf
Light - The Path
Rain - Radio Silence
Zopp - Dominion
But right on their heels I have:
Mike Keneally - The Thing That Knowledge Can’t Eat
PoiL Ueda - PoiL Ueda
Eyeless Owl - Murmurations
Amoeba Split - Quiet Euphoria
That Rain album in particular really needs some more ears on it IMO. To me they come across sort of like the UK's answer to Echolyn - nothing particularly showy on the surface, but there's real depth to the songwriting if you're willing to put the time in with it.

I've not listened to enough new music of relevance for PA yet. 2023 favorite so far is The Necks - Travel. Also not on PA, but I guess I think they belong here. My favorite actually in PA is the always wonderful Kosmischer Läufer's new album Volume Five

I listened to your album when it first came out and liked it but actually enjoyed some of your earlier stuff better.
After your post, I went back again. I realized that I'm not as into straight doom like at the beginning of SotW, but that's just my taste, it's well done. But then listening with somewhat fresh ears to the whole album, I'm digging it a lot more. More psych and prog. Odd time in Porcelain is really good, and just the variation of so many textures. The middle section of SotW is my kind of music, and I dig the guitar sound which has more of a single coil feel in a lot of places even thought it's really heavy.
So - Bravo good sir.

They were rejected by Jazz Rock Fusion a couple of years ago. I always considered them borderline but primarily jazz. Great album, great band.

Yes, they do have a little bit of "everything I like". Modern jazz, Motorik/Kraut etc... but Post-Rock is where I'd place them here at PA. Maybe purely accidental, the building blocks are certainly different. But there's a lot of similarities experiencing their music for me as a listener.

Here's mine, decided to branch out a bit, want to go and listen to more genres I like this year than just solely prog rock.
1. Scaring The Hoes by JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown
2. Carousel by Vylet Pony
3. Seeking The Sources of Streams by Cicada
4. Fauna by Haken
5. Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre by Periphery
No really big five star masterpiece yet, but maybe one day 2023 will have that big stand out album, like what 2022 had with All The Pretty Days by Fren.

Wasn't aware of a new album by them. Looking forward to it. The Zopp-album as well (which I was aware of, but simply haven't checked out yet). So far I've got:
Swans - The Beggar The Necks - Travel King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - PetroDragonic Apocalypse* Susanne Sundfør - Blómi Kosmischer Läufer - Volume Five
-and that's pretty much all I got too... with any sort of PA-relevance I mean.

Aksak Maboul - Une aventure de VV (Songspiel)
Squid - O Monolith
Kong - Traders of Truth
Battlestations - Memories of once
Kavus Torabi & Richard Wileman - Heaven's Sun
I don't list the Swans album yet, only heard it once, but chances are it'll be top 5.
Just didn't make it: Zopp - Dominion, Poil Ueda
Not on PA: Mammal Hands - Gift from the Trees; Jeremias Keller - Alloy. The Necks album isn't bad either.

One more I wasn't aware of (the Songspiel one) and another I was aware of but haven't gotten around to checking out yet (O Monolith). Edit: just listened to a couple of songs from the latter bands latest, and decided to buy. Sounded amazing. I heard the quality of the music but wasn't personally completely sold on their debut, but I've understood that O Monolith is a different beast.

I only have one album from 2023 so far, but since so many people have mentioned Zopp's Dominion, I checked that out, and it's very nice! I've come across their debut album before but didn't listen to it IIRC. So if I decide to get that one on CD some time this year that would be my top 1 at that point I guess.

I don't think I have a top 5 yet but that Ultraphauna album would surely be there. I think you had posted a Bandcamp link in another thread and that's how I came to hear it. So, thank you. It's great.
I think I now have a top 5.

I'm really looking forward to that Chronicles Of Father Robin release. I have the 2013 ep which I hope to review in a week or two. This is the first time I've ever preordered an album.
I'll actually be able to contribute to the 2023 Top Albums list. Last year I honestly didn't even have a top 5 worthy of voting for although since then I have picked up some great records from that year. I'm more in tune this year.

Southern Empire - Another World. Been listening to this a lot and has one of the best epics I've heard this year in White Shadows as well as a couple of melodious short songs Hold Onto Me and Butterfly. These guys can certainly play and manage to chuck in a bit of fusion into the mix just to prove the point! A band that is improving and deserve an audience imo.

Bands that are not progressive in any way are tagged with this "not on PA". What's the point?
Also, if there are bands that you think are progressive and not on PA, do suggest them. Otherwise, what's the point of the tag?

No, I'm not
I'm also not freaking out . But these tags still need to make sense in order to be helpful.

^ The "not on pa" part just indicates that at my website there isn't a link to pa for the album - so the link will take you to AwesomeProg instead of PA. But it's also meant to get people curious and think about whether the album should be on PA. Sometimes it should, sometimes it shouldn't

So cool to see that some of you have Actionfredag - "Turist i eget liv" on their lists, but they are not registered in the database. They should be filed under Rio/Avant, I think. At least their influences are very much from that bag.

Nice to see Jesy Chiang and Taiwan's CICADA getting some love! If only PA had a "Chamber Prog" sub-genre the band might be able to be admitted into the database. Their seven studio album releases since 2009 have all, respectively, landed in my year-end top 20s.

^ nice list, perhaps a little suprised that Seven Impale is so low down. I will still only do a top 5 for the moment.
1. Zopp - Dominion
2. Seven Impale - Summit
3. Agusa - Prima Materia
4. Caravela Escarlate - III
5. Lumsk - Fremmede Toner
I also love The Syn - Illusion. Technically a 2023 release I am unable to find out any information about it but I suspect it was recorded around 2004/5 when the band resurfaced. Anyone knows different please tell me!

Listened to the whole thing, and I got to admit ... it takes guts to do stuff like that and make it work. By the 10th piece, it gets a bit tiresome, but it's still good, but the first 3 pieces alone are quite a wake up and interesting thing, and they never break into a "song", or any kind of format, and that is a really serious attempt at creating live improvisation in music ... something that is not exactly easy to do, but these folks were up for it.
Very nice stuff, with amazing moments!
I suppose that I wanted to hear some Ax Gernrich like stuff, like the really early days when Ax went all out crazy and no one could really keep up with him ... but, still, this is excellent, and shows some guts by very special musicians.
I was thinking that this is more "avant-garde" than it is "progressive". And Risa Takeda is far out, playing keyboards in a style that defies description. Excellent ability to mix and match and make things work. She's just as strong in the material with Mani. She might be the highlight of the whole thing, though everyone in it is really fine.

I was off on a electronic ambient binge. My list hasn't changed a lot but I need to revisit a bunch of material. Everyone else's lists will get me started.
1. Witch Ripper - the Flight After the Fall
2. Seven Impale - Summit
3. Plank! - Future of the Sea
4. Atsuko Chiba - Water, It Feels Like It's Growing
5. Sleep Token - Take Me Back to Eden
I really like the new Baroness and Queens of the Stone Age. Prog-adjacent I suppose.
Very interesting on first listens, will likely make the final list:
Father Robin
Mercury Tree
Hackberry
------------- You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Glad you enjoyed it! Risa Takeda really is an out-of-this-world performer. If you enjoyed her work here I highly recommend her other collaborations with Tatsuya Yoshida as well (even if they arguably lean even further towards the avant-garde side than this album does)

I haven't heard tons but the latest by these artists have all been great: Chronicles of Father Robin, Glass Hammer, Pattern Seeking Animals, Caravela Escalarte, Unitopia, Jordsjo, Hackberry and Agusa. Also, an honorable mention to the latest Trevor Rabin. I have Seven Impale and Lars Frederik Froislie but for some reason haven't gotten around to listening to them yet.
