I voted for Steve Hackett, among all this great albums.

I see Paul giving one star very rarely... unfortunately I don't know that Voivod album. My two big candidates are Cardiacs and Talk Talk (3 stars!). I'll go with Cardiacs (2 stars) this time.

Out Of The Silent Planet gets my vote - fantastic album😎

Surprised that ….And Justice For All is not on this list. It’s prog in my book and epic!!

I guess it's horses for courses mate... when I was younger, I tried really really hard to understand what everyone else saw in Ayreon, until I came to the conclusion that it was god-awful rubbish and moved on..

I wouldn't take it too seriously, the reviewer only listens to the first couple of tracks once while they're doing the housework and if it doesn't immediately chime, they give it a 1 star rating on a public forum... Wink

Quite an eclectic list here. I can understand why you like The Dangers of Strangers, Paul, I do like it too, but it is not up to the better ones here (and of the neo prog of that time, imho). I especially like the Cardiacs, Talk Talk and the Emerson, Berry and Palmer albums here, but I have to go with Queensr˙che's Operation Mindcrime - one of the few prog metal albums that are very high on my lists.

Yep! That sounds about right. After listening to the first couple of tracks of Voivod's abysmal fourth album I felt as if I was falling into a deep dark void and knew instantly that Voivod were a band to avoid at all costs from now on. It makes Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden album sound like a masterpiece by comparison. As Lewian mentioned earlier, I very rarely hand out 1-star ratings, but I can now add Voivod to the growing list alongside Swans, Therion, Thinking Plague, Robert Wyatt and Frank Zappa. Ouch Thumbs Down Disapprove

I went with Cardiacs' A Little Man and a House and the Whole Windy World over Talk Talk, which is over Devil Doll. I first heard that Devil Doll album when I ran a little The Prisoner forum two decades ago. It's named after a favourite episode of mine.

^ I actually don't see Nothingface (an album I like too) in Wikipedia's 1989 Prog timeline page (from whence these choices appear): See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_progressive_rock_%281980–1989%29#1989" rel="nofollow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_progressive_rock_(1980–1989)#1989

My favourite studio albums there are After Dinner's Paradise of Replica and Thinking Plague's in This Life.

Also no Savatage which made huge step forward in song-writing & performance with their 1989 album Gutter Ballet.

At least whoever made that wiki list did not forget about Fates Warning.

No suprise for me here concerning Voivod's late '80s albums, but regarding Zappa, I could be curious about albums like Hot Rats or Over-nite SensationSmile

I've only given a 1-star rating to one Frank Zappa album so far and that was Jazz from Hell. The title says it all really. Tongue

Well, I wouldn't say either that you've underrated Part One, but about Voivod I'd like to tell you, I find Nothingface quite a lot more accessible than Dimension Hatross, even probably still too hard-edged and dissonant for you - I guess.

It depends, i don't know how you are with heavy metal, US power or progressive metal. But if you like a bit of that, start with the albums with Ray Alder on vocals. Their earlier work is more heavy metal, US Power, with some Iron maiden influences (their first two albums). Their first vocalist John Arch is a bit of an acquired taste, try the 1986 album Awaken The Guardian. If you like that, you'll enjoy everything else with Arch on vocals.
Also many years after he was out of FW, John Arch reunited with FW guitarist John Matheos and they did two albums together.

Knowing what you like, I would say that either Perfect Symmetry (89) or Parallels (91) would be a good place to start; they are arguably the most accessible.

APSOG was always my favourite; it's the most progressive, certainly..

Actually, I find Part One quite spooky too, and it took some listenings before I really could like it.

'89 timeline is also missing Gretchen Goes to Nebraska by King's X, which is my all time favorite of theirs. Will vote for Out of the Silent Planet here.

That's their nadir, I'm afraid. I'd backtrack to Perfect Symmetry / Parallels or jump ahead to Darkness in a Different Light / Theories of Flight, where they regained their mojo.

Pretty awful year for prog. By this point I believed music was on its knees until Enya released the sublime Watermark album. I also loved Al Stewart's 'Crossover prog' album The Last Days Of The Century and Vangelis released one of his best albums Direct after he had relocated back to Greece.

That's their nadir, I'm afraid. I'd backtrack to Perfect Symmetry / Parallels or jump ahead to Darkness in a Different Light / Theories of Flight, where they regained their mojo.

nadir?! it's one of my favorite albums. LOL

I can see it from both points of view... it's good, but has a certain starkness which divides opinion. FWX was the nadir in my view..Ouch

I don't think FW has ever created a "nadir". They have never released a bad album.

It may be noticed and curious enough that not all the bands included in Wikipedia's Timeline of Progressive Rock are
considered Prog in Wikipedia's articles about those bands. Ermm
