Please give me your best music for sleeping / relaxation / de-stressing! Of course the music can't be fast-paced, nor chaotic, and must be mellow. Smile But perhaps slow-tempo metal would be ok Smile I like to be open-minded Smile Pink Floyd for example sometimes has a heavy sound while at the same time being very relaxing. It does not have to be prog. Here are my favorites!

Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
The Beatles - Abbey Road

I always go to sleep to music so I understand wanting to find good night songs. Let me name some of my favorites:

-Book of Saturday - King Crimson
-Fat Old Sun - Pink Floyd
-The Rain Song -Led Zeppelin
-Mother Nature's Son - The Beatles (the Gryphon cover on Raindance is also amazing)
-Don't Let it Show- Alan Parson's Project
-Blood on the Rooftops - Genesis
-Clown - Argent

I have a whole playlist but these are some of the highlights written by prog/rock bands. Happy Sleeping :)

I bet there are great stuff from the following, but I'm not familiar enough with them to post/mention anything specific: Enya, classical music

^ My pleasure. As it happens, I was listening to Marillion's Misplaced Childhood album on repeat play last night as I drifted off to sleep, although I wouldn't recommend it, as every time "Kayleigh" came around again for the second, third and fourth time during the night, I kept thinking, "Oh no, not again." Tongue

I like a lot of the stuff from the "New Age" period of late 80's to early 90's, that is electronic, interesting, and yet still relaxing, including:

Richard Burmer
Don Harris
Raphael (Disappearing into ?... can't remember the title, but not the Vol. with drums)

I'm going to commend the OP for their linked choice. The music of Legend of Zelda is absolutely amazing, and it has been amazing for decades. Themes that were created by Koji Kondo in 8-bit sound great in 16-bit, 64-bit, and beyond. The many fully orchestrated works/performances of Zelda music proves the compositional strength of these pieces. Here's a treat from an AMAZING group. Charlie Rosen is usually the bassist but is also the arranger, conductor, and leader of 8-Bit Big Band. His arrangements sometimes take the composition further into what it was always meant to be, or, they take it to completely new and unexplored styles. Check out their version of Zelda's Lullaby, with a killer flute solo.

I often use electronic artist Thom Brennan with his lovely cascading liquid synths but Neuronium/Michel Huygen comes a close second!

Hi,

Weird to me that someone is mentioning rock bands and SONGS for this OP.

There is a lot of meditation music out there and in my book none of the things mentioned actually fit, and while some may have some soothing moments in its entirety too much of it is a song.

Most meditation and relaxation music is kind of "endless" and is able to carry you through it, and one could even suggest ENO and his many albums on the subject, not to mention a whole series of AMBIENT albums way back when as it was not thought of as "music".

I'm even afraid to make a list of many things that I listen to that could be said to be for relaxation and sleeping, although at my age, I no longer need "supplements" to get to my sleeping state. I use meditation or chants for that, since any kind of music tends to wake up the visible spectrum and create a "film" of sorts for me.

The best music for the specific request, would be SILENCE. Though in the age of the internet, the word "silence" is an oxymoron!

Hi,

I would put on "Alpha Centauri" and "Atem" ... though I would skip "Phaedra" for its hardcore sequencer stuff and move to "Stratosfear" that is much softer and less power driven by sequencers at least that I know.

But there is a lot of stuff out there that belongs in this category, that I am not sure the OP might not exactly be interested in ... I really am scared to post my list ...

I can sort of choose to engage or relax to all of these...

Klaus Schulze - Mirage, Moondawn+  many, many more...
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra, Rubycon + many, many more...
The Necks - Aquatic, Hanging Gardens, Further, Blue Mountain many more...
Miles Davis - He Loved Him Madly (just one composition, but it's 32 minutes long), Ife, Recollections, Lonely Fire (all about 20 minutes each), Mayisha... In a Silent Way many more...
Constance Demby - Sacred Space Music
Popol Vuh - Bruder des Schattens-Sone Des Licht (+ more)
Pharoah Snaders - Harvest Time
Can - Future Days (Bel Air in particular)

If I sat here all day I could probably come up with over a 100 more...

Hi,

A few more ... in a historical type way.

--Tibetan Bells ... one of the first and beautiful albums. I think there were 3 of them. Wolff and Hemmings

--Paul Horn ... a few of his albums were neat and special. Inside the pyramid is one album to have for sure!

--Stephan Micus ... acoustic stuff and very pretty.

--Thiij Van Leer ... his first solo albums starting with the "Introspection" albums is all classical music done with flute. Beautiful stuff!

--Frank Perry ... the most difficult listen of them all, and this is not for you rockers at all. You're not going to find a "beat" in hundreds of bells and bowls! On the first album, it's basically 2 meditations and it took me 3 or 4 times to get comfortable with them to be able to do just side 1. This is NOT music as you know it ... and don't think that you can pick it up in 10 seconds ... you won't!

--Ash Ra Tempel ... the early stuff is trippy although it is thought to be tainted with drugs. "Join Inn" and then "New Age of Earth" are excellent in every way ... trying sitting under a starry night at the lake listening to side 2 of NAOE album. And even later, just as AshRa, it still had wonderful stuff.

--Deuter ... he deserved better as a lot of his music was actually very nice, were it not that it was "dedicated" to a Guru that was given the boot in America. The music is excellent and very listenable, regardless of its "ideas" ... but since when is an idea "visible" in music?

--David Parsons ... several albums that are very nice to listen to.

--Christopher Franke ... was kinda put in the "new age" section of things, but his work is hardly that ... very pretty and nice stuff. He did the soundtrack for a lot of episodes of BABYLON 5 with one very sad comment ... the directors in that series were idiots and wouldn't know how to use music in their lives. I don't think that Christopher ever recovered from that and he is still a hermit, and almost no one knows anything about him, or if he has even done any music in 20 years. My thoughts are that he hasn't.

-- Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze
Klaus Schulze's material is special for dreaming and meditation. It does NOT interfere with your inner sights as the music itself is "invisible" and simple continues even if it picks up a beat along the way to make it stronger. One of the few folks that never compromised his own work and did it his way, complete with a mixing board at his hands in every concert. And he has some unbelievable great and beautiful things, and the series that was delivered as "Works" 1 and 2, is fantastic and less electronic, using other musicians also improvising with him, and some are exceptional. Try "My Ty She" ... if you don't believe me!

Tangerine Dream, would be best "served" as soundtrack music. Its work is about the visualization that goes along with a story of sorts, and it seems to fit well in my imagination, but it's hard for folks to get their ears around anything that is pop oriented instead of something like TD which is "movie oriented" and has very specially beautiful moments. You can hear the music, but sadly we will NEVER SEE the complete SORCERER film with the full work by Tangerine Dream ... I think the studios think it will be a waste of money and screw the music, but you can get the complete shows, the last before Edgar Froese passed away, and immediately think ... I wanna watch that movie with that music together!

A lot of "new age" music was actually very nice, with only one problem for me ... the titles were all imaginary, coupled with bad covers on the CD's and Cassettes, and it made the music seem poor. So one album would have a slightly disrobed women dancing in the mist, as if she were nymph or a witch ... and we're supposed to imagine that this is what the music is all about. Guess what? It wasn't even close ... and the error in assuming that an audience was stupid enough to believe an image and what they were told, finally went away with a lot of folks ripping people off left and right. An "age" came apart due to corruption of its own leaders!

Nowadays I just go for one of the ambient/dark ambient 3+ hour videos on YouTube--like from Greenred Productions or SpaceAmbient or I might cue up something by Stellardrone or DreamState Logic or maybe even Alio Die but, back in the day, my college roommate and I would play Side Two of Dark Side of the Moon--skipping "Money"--every night before we fell asleep.

Listening to Evening Star right now - quite nice.

I have listened to a LOT of ambient / meditation music in recent years. Stellardrone is great if you want a sci-fi / spacey flavor that's a bit more recent.

In spite of a lot of this music having similarities, there are quite a few different "headspaces" I'm going for when I put this on: meditation music really needs to set a mood and then get out of the way, where as for sleep or background music for work there can be a little more going on as long as it stays chill. Sometime I'm listening intently but want it to be relaxing and then I need something that covers more territory.

Yep, ambient is your best friend for some "sleep" music. Alio Die in particular is really good, same with Klaus Schulze and Brian Eno. Check out Alio Die's Incantamento for some nice ambient music to relax to.

When one of my sons was a baby/toddler, '90-'93, I played cassette tapes of Ashra when putting him to bed.
Ashra: Blackouts
Ashra: Belle Alliance
Ashra: Correlations
Might have also played Ashra: New Age of Earth.

Maybe a bit cliched and normie, but I do admit that well-done lo-fi is quite relaxing good before bed. One of my favorite arrangers is Dreamy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4P0-7BXlao

I also like simple piano meodies, too. Often based off of soundtracks. This guy from Korea is really good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rd83jMTERqM

Perhaps my absolute favorite would be droney/stonery psychedelic metal, especially if you want something more commercial and original.
Such as Om,: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4Hss-QiCnQ&list=OLAK5uy_kUlN9ZFD2Y1iNDkag4Ft2-jhaN4MX-M6M&index=1
and Earth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDLaPKpym3o&list=OLAK5uy_nWBlZ2PQSgAJWyNpzmLrVLjk39hD58boI

There's also space ambient - it's a genre I got into when I was a teenager and found it the most relaxing thing ever, but I haven't listened to it in years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wLwxmjrZj8

If you like Pink Floyd, then maybe try Polygondwanaland from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. It may be a bit on the "chaotic" side, relative to the other suggestions here, but anything with a polyrhythm is going ot be relaxing to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqS8bphqBys&list=OLAK5uy_kZx-hTxk_EfczAhOP3eQT-kJlBsH7NJXs (this one's also really good with *puff puff*, if you know what I mean Wink)

If on the otherhand you like Camel, I highly, HIGHLY recommend Mir by Telegraph. This is probably the most relaxing album I've listened to in the prog realm in years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-peau5RgAyM&list=PLqfkBo29a8h9gxVPlperd5Wfh8drW1PZQ
In fac I'm going to embed this one :)

There's also Stories of the Astral Lizard by Re-Stoned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UviKpPF91Uk&list=OLAK5uy_lIkh5sBNWCqA6nZAnbRPeJ5bG0yYykV3M

Going back to ambient, I also do like dark ambient, and it pairs really well with nordic neo-folk (what RYM calls "neo-pagan folk [???]"). Here's Forndom, for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHZ6P7qfwTQ&list=OLAK5uy_nJ9SGfQJbSl9XQHCy_FlX53cEVI21vfUc&index=6 Anything with a rhythmic, tribal beat is going to be highly relaxing. Also embedding this one for that reason.

Post-rock and modern classical with bittersweet melancholy is also quite relaxing (and there are lots of them): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVDIALTsLRE&list=PLMynaxX_I0z_flTWOXP5ywwzDtppAWlRM

Lastly, I would recommend trying out some straight up drone music, too. It's not for everyone, but those who get, f**king get it lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMlsM7C8y3w&list=PLvsYXqtYjMYc2zsMGGwEvbMWi5j1zJWvc

Most of Brian Eno's ambient albums are very relaxing. My personal favorite is the album he did with Harold Budd entitled The Pearl. Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror is equally sublime.

Thanks for sharing your awesome list of relaxation and sleeping music! Those tracks sound like a perfect way to chill and unwind.I totally get you; music has this magical power to transport us to a peaceful state of mind. Personally, I have a soft spot for http://https://mcneelamusic.com/flutes.html" rel="nofollow - Irish flute tunes. There's something unique and calming about them, even though they might not be as common as other genres. For me the best late night album for unwinding to has always been Santana's 'Caravanserai' - can't really pick an individual song (except maybe 'Just in Time to See the Sun') as it's one of those albums that is way more that the sum of its constituent parts and really should only ever be listened to in its entirety.

I actually came here to mention listening to 'Caravanserai' for the first a few weeks ago and thought, "Wow" and never really checked out the discography because of some misinterpretation.

I hope I can find something like that in this thread. Thanks!

Santana's output was reasonably prolific back in the day, but I'd certainly recommend you explore their first three albums. The 4th was of course Caravanserai, IMO their masterpiece. Their output after that can be a bit of a mixed bag, but I'd certainly also recommend 1977's Moon Flower (half studio and half live tracks). Then to really capture the spirit of their early live performances try 'Lotus' (1975) which was originally a triple vinyl release.

For me, relaxation requires silence. I can't use music, because relaxation means that I have to cut off external stimuli, otherwise I will experience sensory overload. For the same reason, I can not use music as a background noise; it just becomes a disturbance, and it makes me stressed.

When I do listen to music, it is because I am in need of stimuli. I listen to it actively, and I usually don't do other things at the same time, because generally I can't concentrate on more than one thing. Sometimes I will listen to music before sleeping, but then I will put the record back in place and turn off the stereo, and then go to sleep.

^ It's more or less the same for me. When I listen to music, I try to concentrate on it as much as I can.

I usually listen to music in the evening, before going to sleep, always with headphones.

I sometimes (not often) might put on something as background sound for reading, only to drown out or mix with noises from neighbours or outside. It has to be something minimal, ambient and/or repetitive. I don't listen to music when I'm traveling. Not on the bus, bike or walk. I like to put on a CD when I'm driving, though. Or used to, until my car CD player stopped working. Ouch

...

Hi,

I always thought that the "secret" to almost all of it was the "shutting off the internal dialogue" (as stated by Castaneda), but in a busy day and time as today is with so much TV and Computer, the idea of being able to shut off this internal dialogue is just that ... an idea!

Thus, the relaxation and sleeping stuff that the OP is asking for will remain an idea ... and the reality is ... IT CAN'T BE AN IDEA ... or it won't happen.

I would recommend starting out by finding a mediation workshop, or yoga workshop so you can learn to relax many parts of your body, firstly by breathing properly, and then taking it into the next place.

It's crazy and bizarre to see music be suggested here that does not belong in the arena of mediation. Most of it is CREATING an image for you when what you need for relaxation and sleeping is to make sure there are no "images" so you can enter "the void" (for lack of better wording -- not to scare folks), where there is "nothing" which allows your body and mind the maximum relaxation likely possible.

It takes, however, years to get to this point, so one day listening to Caravanserai, is not going to help! You have to get past the "ideas" of it all in the first place!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Well, yesterday I fell asleep to Returned To The Earth- fall of the watcher (by accident). In the past I have fallen asleep to Camel.

When I need some music to help myself fall asleep, I play something really loud and busy sounding, so that the music masks most of the noises coming from my neighbours, busy street etc. It helps.
