How my list stacked up. Not shocked by the winner, but not a big fan. What I am shocked by is my #1 got no other votes.

1. Wippy Bonstack - 22 (75)

Wippy gets my vote for #1.

Nice to see Mira on the list.

nice to see Elder come in as high as it did.

check out Elder's bandcamp page.  At the bottom, follow the links to King Buffalo and All Them Witches.  Those bands are not on PA but are incredible bands making some wonderful music.

Great to see some old friends like Banco and Schulze making the list and very happy that the last minute Perfect made it as well. 2022 was an excellent year that i'm still trying to take in.

Great job! Clap

I have limited my selections to ten the past few years, because as I get older I lack patience, and need more time to yell at clouds. Anyway, here were my selections, and where they placed:

Jonas Lindberg & The Other Side - Miles From Nowhere (25)
Black Midi - Hellfire (1)
Big Big Train - Welcome to the Planet (5)
Extra Life - Secular Works, Vol. 2 (90)
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso - Orlando: Le forme dell'amore (15)
Porcupine Tree - Closure/Continuation (4)
Jethro Tull - The Zealot Gene (112)
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Changes (67)
Magma - Kãrtëhl (33)
Devin Townsend - Lightwork (62)

All over the map, which pretty much accords to my listening habits.

Black Midi's Hellfire is what I had expected to be the album of the year. No surprise there. My top "in PA" album was The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention, which I had expected to fare better than the 40 it did.

I have thought that I often would see more in common with the rateyourmusic album list rankings with these collabs list than those in the top album charts at PA -- I would need to verify that. Certain kinds of Neo-Prog, Crossover Prog and Symphonic Prog tend to do much better here than at Rate Your Music -- I think our charts veer more to the melodic rock and metal and oldschool Symph Prog side, whereas RYM is rather more art rock, psych, chamber and avant, folk, electronic, and experimental oriented when it comes to Prog umbrella and related music. I see Collage's in the charts here at number 5 with 117 ratings. black midi is at a very respectable nine with 117 ratings. At RYM, Collage's is at number 1,694 for 2022 with 97 ratings and 4 reviews. At RYM, black midi's hellfire is the number 2 album of the year (all genres) with 19,150 ratings and 291 reviews. It would be interesting to compare across many ratings sites.

As much as I admire Black Midi for going out on a limb with what they do I find I can only enjoy them in small doses. Still good enough to make my own list and deserving NO1 just for good intent if nothing else.
I voted Motorpsycho my NO1 which followed the 'Norwegian protocol' set by Wobbler - 4 great tracks!
I expected The Flower Kings to do better, only 3 of us put them in their selection (me included) but I would have expected a few more lower placings at least.
Also seems I am the only one who likes Glass Hammer. Is that because they are generally not available on streaming sites or people just feel they have no value I wonder..

Posted By: Negoba
Date Posted: February 21 2023 at 08:33
I haven't listened to Glass Hammer in awhile, but not being on streaming sites is huge. There are so many artists that I was able to check out that there's no way I could afford to buy physical media for all of them. I haven't purchased physical media in a long time.

Ironically, my kids who are in their early twenties spend ridiculous amounts on vinyl.

Interesting, I remember my band (STONED JESUS) was rejected, even though our transition to prog happened around the same time as ELDER's (2015), and KING BUFFALO guys were citing our album Pilgrims as a direct influence on their style But I guess it's the name - "lol they're called sToNeD JeSuS light one up duuuude" - that stops many from taking out music seriously...anyway, sorry for the offtop

Interesting, I remember my band (STONED JESUS) was rejected, even though our transition to prog happened around the same time as ELDER's (2015), and KING BUFFALO guys were citing our album Pilgrims as a direct influence on their style But I guess it's the name - "lol they're called sToNeD JeSuS light one up duuuude" - that stops many from taking out music seriously...anyway, sorry for the offtop

if the band released new music (since the rejection that is) they can be re-evaluated.

next Friday, our first LP in five years!

On a serious note, it's really cool to see stoner/doom/psych-prog appreciated here, we're literally invisible for any other music media (even most metal news sites)

I guess that I will join in.  I wasn't really into it as much this year.  I usually try and listen to as many new releases as I can get my ears on during December through February, but this year I pretty much stuck with what I had already listened to or owned.

1. Jonas Lindberg & the Other Side - Miles from Nowhere (25)
2. Bubblemath - Turf Ascension (21)
3. Magenta - The White Witch - A Symphonic Symphony (81)
4. Pattern-Seeking Animals - Only Passing Through (42)
5. Big Big Train - Welcome to the Planet (5)
6. Kaipa - Urskog (112)
7. Birth - Born (14)
8. Ghost of the Machine - Scissorgames
9. Fren - All the Pretty Days (13)
10. The Tangent - Songs from the Hard Shoulder (11)
11. Fromuz - The Asymmetric Rules (165)
12. Cosmograf - Heroic Materials (175)
13. Haven of Echoes - The Indifferent Stars (188)
14. Kalle Wallner - Voices (175)
15. The Aristocrats - The Aristocrats with Primuz Chamber Ochestra (209)
16. Steve Howe - Lunar Mist (213)
17. Porcupine Tree - Closure / Continuation (4)
18. Star One - Revel In Time (229)
19. Collage - Over and Out (81)
20. Kaprekar's Constant - The Murder Wall (239)

I have to admit that I am initially disappointed with the #1.  It was one of those albums that I listened to once and didn't enjoy.  I suppose that I will have to give it some more listens to see if it grows on me.

^ I listened to it 2-3x over a 30 day period and it never resonated with me at all. Not my cup of tea.....

Apparently the Collaborators haven't listened to the new Verbal Delirium. One 20th place vote?
(I love complaining!!!) Awesome work!!!

I really like the genre, tend to lean more to the psych-prog side but definitely appreciate the Sabbath / fuzz side too.

Your music comes up on Spotify generated playlists for me. I've enjoyed, and now that I know that a fellow PAer is involved, I'll go back and check out the discography. Congrats on new work getting released!

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Talk about feelings of inadequacy...while I know and own many albums by several bands on that main list, I only own THREE of the particular albums mentioned.

Voivod, King's X, Blut Aus Nord Pinch

Given the previous years' no. 1's, I somehow knew Black Midi were going to win PA's 2022 AOTY so I listened to their album over and over before casting my end of the year votes, and over and over I didn't like it. Hence, it didn't end up on my Top 20 AOTY. I continue to hope that one day I 'get it'.

^ For me, black midi's problem is the vocals (or spoken words). I would love to hear instrumental mixes. I think I would prefer them.

Agreed. I liked them initially, but the vocals remind me of a political talk show host. Makes me a little anxious to listen to.

I never fully warmed up to Hellfire but I love Cavalcade for its eclecticism and contrast which is at times abrasive and at other times I find it truly beautiful. I also prefer Schlagenheim to Hellfire. That said I very much do appreciate all three and listening to the three albums in a row all the more increased my admiration for this interesting and exciting band. I'm happy to see Hellfire at number one despite it not being my number one. Overall, I love the vocals across their various albums and it's a big part of what makes this band and these albums special to me and plays a part in differentiating itself from the others.   The band does have elements that make me uneasy and challenge me and much of it falls right inside my comfort zones.

black midi is clearly building on the artistic growth and popularity of their unique vocals and lyricism. I love it, though I still think they could stand to keep doing more instrumental cuts and even release instrumental versions of their vox songs.

I'm actually liking the vocals on Hellfire better than on Cavalcade; Greep's vocals specifically seem better integrated within the music and he seems more secure and confident.

Correct, I didn't, but then again, I'm not into the poppier side of prog which is where they belong having now listened to their '22 release. And, oh yes, they ARE in the Crossover prog category - I'm not surprised.

Admittedly, it's really a good album so thanks for alerting me / us Thumbs Up However, at the end of the day it's not my cup of tea and believe me, not PA top 20 AOTY worthy, sorry. I will probably relisten the album - if I'm in the proper mood which I sometimes am.

Hey, that was #1 on my list as well. Great mimes wink alike.

Vesilinja - Myrskyn Keskellä is my personal favorite. I would place it above all of those top 10 albums, especially that Klaus Schultze record, which was a disappointment.

I like it a lot but only made No 20 in my selection because there were so many great albums released in the year. I think I had more than a few albums in my selection that didn't make anyone else's including the brilliant Arena and Glass Hammer releases.
