Scottish band Pallas were one of the first Neo Prog bands to Arrive Alive on the music scene in 1981 with the release of their debut live album. Three years later, came their stunning magnum opus - The Sentinel - a science fiction concept album about a technologically advanced civilisation that brings itself to the brink of destruction, despite The Dreams of Men hoping for a better world. Sound familiar? The third Pallas album would drive The Wedge between those fans who wanted to hear another classic prog album and others who wanted a more modern sound. After all, this was the 1980's, so there's no accounting for taste. I know how we like to constantly Beat the Drum about the merits of prog here at PA and some of us even Live Our Lives from Moment to Moment every day in the progosphere. Like me for instance. We all have The Cross & the Cruc ible to bear in trying to convince prog non-believers they don't know what they're missing out on in life, but We Are Who We Are, and sadly, some non-believers may be destined to remain in The Blinding Darkness and be forever ignorant of the joyous wonders of prog until The Edge of Time itself. Confused

Year 2000: I had two albums Of Pallas (The Sentinel, The Cross And The Crucible). And recently, A friend of mine talk to me about this band. So I think I will buy again some CDs of them. Their music is very melodic, symphonic, sometimes heavy. Imho, far better than the new albums of Clepsydra and Collage.

As I've mentioned before, I oddly did have a soft spot for Beat The Drum and saw them on tour supporting the album, but I've never really enjoyed any of their others that much... sorry!

There will always be a place in my heart for both The Sentinel and The Wedge, in spite of both being available with different track listings when re-issued. Living far from Scotland, the comeback albums were a big surprise, but eventually left me hugely underwhelmed.

What a great thread.
Definitely Pallas deserve to sit in the higher echelon of Neo Prog bands. I absolutely adore “Beat The Drum” and Dreams Of Men.
I’m fortunate enough to have the 2CD deluxe edition of that album. It is a beauty.

After Alan Reed Left they got a bit heavier sounding with 25vvv. Good album, but not as magical as the first 2 I mentioned.

Overall though. Pallas deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Arena, IQ, Galahad and Marillion.

I only have one album from them. Ghost light orchestra I think it is called and it has been ages since I listened to it. I’ll have to fix that.
Haven’t explored Osiris or Abel Ganz.

The Dreams Of Men is a tremendous album but I haven't explored much further than that. Think I may own XXV but wasn't impressed and so didn't explore further. Strangely I've never heard the Sentinel.

I agree Richard.
Haven’t gone past post Alan Reed Era. Also that makes two of us regarding the Sentinel. I haven’t listened to the whole album all the way through cause I’ve yet to procure a physical copy of the disc.
I shall fix that someday.

Actually, I listened to Script yesterday and to The Jewel this evening. I liked much Script from the beginning, but not that much
The Jewel. It has grown on me, but I'd still like it to sound more organic.

I don't have many by them. I was playing Cross And The Crucible not too long ago. I also have the wedge, beat the drum and the one with the roman numerals and I think that's about it. Smile

Saw them when the Sentinel came out (and still have my fully signed lp with the poster from the gig!) and they were as good as any of the other NWOBPR bands live at the time. The Sentinel was not my favourite lp of that era by a long shot but i did retain a soft spot for it. Saw them in 2008 and was very underwhelmed.. saw them again (though cant remember the year) with a new, more energetic and aggressive lead singer.. the show was tighter and better but not really my thing. I think they always had an eye on being more of a heavy rock band..

Twelfth night and IQ was much more my thing particularly in the studio

Speaking of Niall. I gave Dreams of Men a full spin the other day including the bonus CD and I have to say “Dreams of men” is really up there for me. It has stood the test of time being nearly 20 years old (2005) and the album overall is just flat out excellent. Has almost as much magic as Collage’s Moonshine.

Dreams of Men is one of my favourite Pallas albums too and their latest album "The Edge of Time" is my favourite Neo Prog album of all time. Thumbs Up
