Subject: Challenge each other's yearly music choices

The idea is that one person posts a track (and lists the year) and another person challenges that track with another track from the same year. The next person votes on which is their favourite of those two tracks and can then post any track from any year, and then someone challenges that track, and so-on. This is open to Prog and non-Prog.

Later on I am considering doing some polls covering our music choices if this takes off.

{Note: please specify band/artist and track/song name in post as sometimes vids can not be seen by various others due to restrictions, and please mention the year to avoid errors. I guess this could be in Just For Fun, but I am treating it as a more serious way to discover some music along the way.}

I'll start this off with Cardiacs' "Dirty Boy" from one of my favourite years in music, which is 1996.

So does anyone want to choose another track from 1996 as the "Dirty Boy" challenger?

Thanks, Paul.

The gauntlet has been thrown down. Now who, if anyone, is going to smell the glove and vote between the 1996 challengers, Rick Wakeman's Fields of Green vs. Cardiacs's Dirty Boy (two very different sounding tracks), and then hopefully mention his/her/their own track/song choice from any year to be challenged?

I guess I should have specified that along with one's track, one should provide a listening link or, preferably, a youtube embed so that people who don't know the music can listen to it. I'm so used to things like the Interactive Polls and I often use embeds or now add playlists to my polls that I forgot to get into more specifics. I put so little effort into preparing this topic.

In this case, both Paul and I used youtube embeds, and if people are to state a preference then I would ask them to familiarise themselves with the music. This might well prove too much of a challenge to really get going, but I have long liked those kinds of topics which get us listening to each other's music choices rather than just going with what we already know. But I think most others don't like to discover and listen to music this way. I hadn't heard that Wakeman piece until Paul posted it.

If youtube is proving problematic for some for these:
https://alphabet-business-concern.bandcamp.com/track/dirty-boy-2" rel="nofollow - https://alphabet-business-concern.bandcamp.com/track/dirty-boy-2

I was looking for Fields of Green on Rick Wakeman's bandcamp page but didn't find it. https://rickwakeman.bandcamp.com/music" rel="nofollow - https://rickwakeman.bandcamp.com/music

I would like to try to make this a more inclusive topic if I can, which has a broader range of potential participation with diverse forum members.

Well, Mr. Wakeman gets my vote here, so it’s a win for Paul!

The Cardiacs sounded like a punk version of Suede, sorry Logan, not my cup of tea. The other piece was pleasant, nothing particularly special, but more pleasant to my ears!

No problem, I appreciate you listening. Thanks, man. Cardiacs is quite marmite and I wanted to go for something that I and certain others here love but doesn't have the broadest appeal.

If you can think of a track, Prog or not, from any year, please do mention it. If you don't want to, then someone else can come up with one.

OK, I’m going for one of my favourite years, 2019. A brilliant year for music for me, before the s**t hit the fan the following year.

One of my favourite albums from that year is The Spell by Cellar Darling. Fronted by the wonderful Anna Murphy (vocals, hurdy-gurdy, flute), Cellar Darling are folk prog metal. The Spell is a concept album, and I choose Insomnia, link to the fantastic video below - sorry, I don’t know how to embed!

Bring on a decent challenger🤘

Although some would rather not have embeds, and I might change from those as they can slow down pages, I will add that. I know it can be harder to do especially when one is on one's phone (one does not need to add embeds or hyperlinks).

I'm enjoying that one myself, and have one I would like to challenge it with, and I want to give someone else a shot, but I can't resist 2019 with Lingua Ignota's Caligula album.

This is 2019's "May Failure Be Your Noose" by Kristin Hayter (aka Lingua Ignota).

Warning: not kid friendly, uses the fu** swear word, but I think it's a decent challenger despite the indecent language. ;)

Of the original, 1996 challenge, I have to go with the Wakeman-Hammond collaboration. (Sorry, Ian). The Cardiacs song is just too monotonous for me--and I do not hear lyrics so the words/message is meaningless to me.

My challenge from 1996 releases is my favorite song from that year: After Crying's "Külvárosi éj" from their wonderful album De Profundis:

Okay, I guess I'll challenge again on 1996 after having lost the last 1996 challenge with Dirty Boy.

I challenge After Crying's "Külvárosi éj" from their wonderful album De Profundis with Stereolab's "Cybele's Reverie" from the wonderful Emperor Tomato Ketchup.

So we now have two challenges going on:

2019's Cellar Darling's "Insomnia" vs. Lingua Ignota's "May Failure Be Your Noose"

AND 1996's After Crying's "Külvárosi éj" vs. Stereolab's "Cybele's Reverie" (and also against the first winner "Fields of Green" if people want a threesome).

I was thinking that one would choose one's winner of the latest challenge before introducing a new challenge, but I guess it may be fine to go back to earlier ones and be flexible as long as we can keep track of the challenges where the victor has not been decided. It's all good, and it should find its way if it goes on even if that way is any which way and every which way. :) And of course I'm happy to see comments on any of the selections and "battles".

Results of concluded battles so far:

1996: Cardiacs' "Dirty Boy" vs Rick Wakeman's "Fields of Green":
"Dirty Boy" = LOSER
"Fields of Green" = Winner

Current Ongoing Battles (undecided):

- 2019: Cellar Darling's "Insomnia" vs. Lingua Ignota's "May Failure Be Your Noose"

- 1996: After Crying's "Külvárosi éj" vs. Stereolab's "Cybele's Reverie"

Correction Logan - I chose the track Insomnia by Cellar Darling, from the album The Spell! Although to be fair the whole album is brilliant, I’m just finishing listening to it again now😎

For the 2019 challenge, I pick Cellar Darling as the winner. Stylistically, Lingua Ignota would usually be my preference, but the vocals by Anna Murphy impressed . Cool visuals in that video though not a factor in deciding the winner.

I haven't decided on the other challenge going on yet. In the meantime, will offer up from 2001:

Dreadnaught - Ballbuster

This is the eclectic prog band, spelled with "naught" not the eclectic metallish band spelled with "nought".

For the 1996 challenge, I vote for Stereolab.

Wippy Bonstack "Beautiful Stain". 2022.

I would vote for Stereolab as well. Both tracks are great but stereolab definitely had a Sunday morning vibe while After Crying was definitely at dusk music.

I'll challenge Wippy Bonstack with Kikagaku Moyo.

"Dancing Blue" 2022

Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: January 15 2023 at 12:03
Sorry, Will, but I choose Kikagaku Moyo's "Dancing Blue". I feel a littrle bad about voting because I already knew and really like that track and happen to be very into Kikagaku Moyo now (after really falling for 2016's House in the Tall Grass especially), and the music is that much more in my wheelhouse, so really biased that way now. That said, I think that the Wippy Bonstack is an awesome track (just not so fitting of my current interests) and I hope some others comment on it in this topic (or elsewhere). Mind anyone reading, this exercise is not about best and just needs one opinion to progress, so it's not something one would take that seriously as a contest, of course.

Now I will challenge George's 2001 "nomination" with my 2001 nomination. Dreadnaught - Ballbuster will go against a major fave of mine Air - Radian.

So here's a recap of the challenges (the verifiably vanquishing and veritably valued victors in these versus, vaguely verses?, are in italics):

- 1996: Cardiacs' "Dirty Boy" vs. Rick Wakeman's "Fields of Green"
- 2019: Cellar Darling's "Insomnia" vs. Lingua Ignota's "May Failure Be Your Noose"
- 1996: After Crying's "Külvárosi éj" vs. Stereolab's "Cybele's Reverie"
- 2022: Wippy Bonstack's "Beautiful Stain" vs. Kikagaku Moyo - "Dancing Blue"

Current challenge to be decided on (to ideally be followed by a new competitor from any year, that hopefully someone else will challenge)...
2001: Dreadnaught - "Ballbuster" (on last page https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC3dsxbfGcI" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC3dsxbfGcI ) vs. Air - "Radian" (see post above)

EDIT: I made a playlist of the tracks thus far in case anyone is interested, which I plan to keep updating if this topic has legs (mostly for me to easily listen to all the music at any time). https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4KmCFvHbzmUU90bQaOwSYCm" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4KmCFvHbzmUU90bQaOwSYCm Thanks to all who have participated -- been appreciating everyone's music choices.

Sorry for the triple-post, but if people want to go ignore my challenger (AIR) and go ahead and post something else to challenge Dreadnaught, any of the others that already had a "winner", or post something new, go ahead. I had felt like I already had challenged too many as it is, and I don't like to be too strict with rules/ guidelines that I think up generally.

Having quite recently done a series of many polls that covers all of the years since 1967 with multiple albums per year, and a playlist for each poll with chosen track from each album, I do have those years in my head with songs ready to go, and I do very much like to share that which I like to those who will lend an ear, as well as to listen to what other people like.

Nice to go through the suggestions put forward so far. Didn't know Wippy Bonstack, but it's a great listen, as is the challenger track. From the 2001 challenge I do know Air very well (I have the album) and like this track very much, but I'll pick Dreadnaught's Ballbuster beclause I didn't know them at all and this is another very good surprise.

I will go back in time a bit and give you some full blown neo prog from 1992, with some of the crčme de la crčme of that genre at that time. One of the last pieces where Geoff Mann exposed his brilliance to the music world:

^Nice track! I didn't know this. I really like what Geoff Mann did with Twelfth Night but never listened to his other work.

As it is, I do have 1992 track to challenge. This is avantgardish thrash metal. They are on PA. Title track from their debut.

Thought Industry - Songs for Insects

I'm hoping for another to put forward a track next (meaning other than me). While I would like to leave it to another to choose a winner for the pair, I was surprised at how how much I appreciated both Casino's Crying onto Baize and Thought Industry's Song for Insects (which I think I have heard before actually).

^ and ^^....

Yes, thanks, this is meant to be a more communal experience than just mentioning music we like or want to share, although the one challenging another's yearly choice, generally, need not choose a favourite of the last pair. I like the idea of topics which get us listening to and commenting on each other's likes. That something I did with friends when young, and I like that kind of interaction with others (as long as it doesn't result in that sucks, your tastes are crap etc.) ;) I do recognise that Paul is very busy with listening to lots of new-to-him albums for his topics as well as listing those albums and the playlists. I've been thinking about doing a new Interactive Poll with very short songs so it shouldn't be too much of a demand on anyone. That is an idea that has been done before, but in this topic there are only two tracks that need to be listened to at a time, so I would think plenty of people could find the time -- the desire is another matter.

To be honest, I appreciate both of those last two challenged tracks each in its own way which does make choosing one really hard. I vacillated on it. Oh well, it's not the contest, or winner that matters really, that's more of an excuse of a kind to have some fun while listening and participating. I definitely had heard Songs for Insects before, and while I find it the more interesting song in a way and yesterday I was leaning towards it, today I'm not sure. I'm going to have to place the wagers and spin the roulette wheel on this, and the Casino got lucky this time (the Casino usually wins of course, and I'm not big on gambling). So I'm voting Casino, but it could be either. I figure Paul would go for the Neo-Prog one if he took the time to listen to both, which actually is making me lean that way (good thing the contest is not too serious).

SO having chosen between those, I will go ahead and place a 2011 challenger for Paul's Jonathan Wilson - Desert Raven (from his debut album, Gentle Spirit, 2011). Wilson's song, which is nice, I listened earlier, will go against North Sea Radio Orchestra's "Morpheus Miracle Maker" off the 2011 album, I a Moon.

(in a way I consider myself lucky to get any level of participation although I would of course prefer it if people take the time to listen to other people's music and comment, even if they don't post their own....)

North Sea Radio Orchestra for me. Great album. A band I was introduced to by the fine people here at PA. Tongue

This is a nice thread and if you keep it going for long enough I'll eventually jump in. Too much to do right now, but...

Posted By: mathman0806
Date Posted: January 22 2023 at 18:33
In 1983, I was a sophomore/junior in high school. I didn't know who Allan Holdsworth was and just starting to learn about "progressive rock". I was listening to album oriented rock and some metal.

I watched videos on MTV, which had a fair share of new wave/art pop music. One of my favorite bands, and still among my favorites, was Blue Őyster Cult. In 1983, they had this number. So, I'll take on Holdsworth with a favorite from back then:

Blue Őyster Cult - Shooting Shark

Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: January 23 2023 at 12:57
^^ Be great if you do get the chance to jump in eventually. :)

^^^ That Holdsworth video was not working for me, my location probably, so I added this one to the https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4KmCFvHbzmUU90bQaOwSYCm" rel="nofollow - playlist : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI7v24xZ7Mw" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI7v24xZ7Mw

So again I was going to wait for others, although I listened through both yesterday, and then again today, but I'll jump in.... I appreciated both. So different. Some might say that Blue Öyster Cult totally had jumped the shark by the time Shooting Shark had come out, and that that shark should have been shot out of its misery and long left for dead, but not me. ;) Okay, I know I just did, but all in fun. I did like it and have been very into 80s music of late (mostly Cocteau Twins mind you). That said, much as I enjoyed hearing it again, I do go with "Tokyo Dream". I have been in a jazzy mood, and maybe it's the Japanohile (not the band Japan) in me.

So I will go for one again, and some might think this cover is blasphemy, but then mightn't one expect a little blasphemy from a Black Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath?

This is "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" off The Cardigans' Life album from 1995:

It tickles me almost as much as Nina Persson's (the singer) fuzzy outfit might.

Posted By: Psychedelic Paul
Date Posted: January 23 2023 at 13:15
^ The Allan Holdsworth video isn't working for me either, but I'll vote for Blue Oyster Cult anyway, as I've been a fan of theirs since my schooldays. I also like The Cardigans lounge version of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and staying on the subject of lounge singers, this is The Mike Flowers Pops with their jazzy version of The Doors classic, from their album, A Groovy Place (1996) Smile

Posted By: mathman0806
Date Posted: January 23 2023 at 14:38
Both Holdsworth's videos play for me.

So, are we back to two challenges. Greg with the Cardigans for 1995 and Paul with the Mike Flowers Pops for 1996?

Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: January 23 2023 at 14:53
^ It could be, although I would say that in this case those loungey covers of classic rock match so darned well that I wouldn't mind not worrying too much about that paltry one year difference and have those challenge each other. I knew both, and really enjoy both of them. Now I've got the urge to make a Mai Tai cocktail, but just where did I did put those little umbrellas?

Posted By: mathman0806
Date Posted: January 23 2023 at 17:24
As I know both the tracks, I am not voting. But, breaking/bending rules is something I could do. How about we make this a cage match? I am going to throw in another loungey cover from 1996.

Moog Cookbook - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Yeah, give me a Mai Tai right now!

What fun are rules if one is not expected to bend and break them? ;) :P

A match with the three cagey contestants battling it out together, you mean? I like the smell of that, as well as your youthful spirited contestant.

So mano a mano a mano...

^And Greg! Epic battle of the Cardigans v. Mike Flowers v. Moog Cookbook v. Weird Al. Who will emerge victorious? Who will dare decide and choose the next battle year? (And if anyone can't tell, I am trying to use by best announcer voice. )

Posted By: Logan

^ Haha, yeah, George, that does make a fun foursome if someone is willing to attempt it, otherwise, I'm okay if those four are voted on in two posts as two of the usual one vs. one matched as otherwise that's most of the participants of this topic who can't vote as they have suggestions up there. Actually, I'm not sure how many have participated without checking, but that's a high percentage. Or the winner of each two could compete against each other, but I think it's better to keep things simple. Of course if someone wants to do that, I think it is good for this topic to be flexible if it is to work out reasonably well. I do like the four going against each other though. I really loved your choice, by the way, George. And Weird Al is plenty of fun.

Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: January 24 2023 at 18:19
While I liked the idea of the three, then four, song cagematch, since I fear that like an aeroplane if this stalls too long it will all too quickly plummet to its end, I will vote for the two that I can... Or, on second thought, reading Will's post again, and because my The Cardigans Cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is from 1995 and the three that followed are all 1996, I will withdraw mine and vote on the three from 1996..

All good stuff, but I went with the one that I knew least: Moog Cookbook - Smells Like Teen Spirit. All are excellent at what they do and I genuinely appreciate each as much in its on way. Inspired by the humour, here is 2011's "Threw it on the Ground" by The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg reminds me somewhat of Weird Al at times).... Or actually (I am second guessing myself a lot)

Scratch that, I want to stay in around the same 90s period with a short track from Boards of Canada. This is "Roygbiv" off the 1998 BoC (not Blue oyster Cult) album Music Has the Right to Children:

Woo hoo. (Runs victory lap.)

A note to Will (Grumpy). If he didn't already know, one half of the Moog Cookbook is Roger Manning of Jellyfish and the Lickerish Quartet. I had noticed he is a fan of both.
