Why isn't Avantasia included in ProgArchives?  It seems pretty proggy.

^^ I know they've been rejected a couple of times in the past and I don't think the present PM team members would be in favour of adding them to the site; they are more Symph power metal, to be fair.

Agreed, but they’re very good 😎

As I said recently in another thread, it's not about the quality of the music; I enjoy a bit of Avantasia myself. They have never been viewed as being 'progressive' despite Tobi writing a few ten-minuters, within a loosely concept-album structure; essentially they are German power metal at heart.

I think they are one of those 'gateway' bands where, if you admitted them, then your reasons for rejecting a huge raft of Symph Metal acts becomes diminished. I know the argument is that we have Nightwish, Kamelot, Epica, Blind Guardian & Rhapsody, so why not add them too? My take is that adding those bands back in the very early days of this site was a mistake, however PA have a policy of not removing bands once they have been added.

This argument however is as old as the site and is set to run and run...

I was pleasantly surprised to find Nightwish, Kamelot, Epica, Blind Guardian & Rhapsody are all included here, even though I don't think of any of those bands as being remotely proggy. It would be too much to hope for that my favourite Symphonic Metal band Within Temptation be included here too, but there's always the Temptation of PA's sister site Metal Archives Within easy reach for the Metalheads amongst us. May The Silent Force be with you. Smile

None of those bands should be considered Prog. That said, Within Temptation kicked ass opening for Iron Maiden...
