Subject: Recent Prog Discoveries 2000-2021

Following on from Recent Prog Discoveries 1980-1999, these are some of the "new" artists I've discovered from my recent series of Post-1970's Prog polls. Predictably, the list is heavy on the symphonic again and very light on anything that's remotely avant garde or metallic. There's a surprisingly strong showing for the Swedes in this list but with barely any showing at all for the turnips.
ARTIST GENRE COUNTRY YEARS ACTIVE
Agents of Mercy Symphonic Prog Sweden 2009-2011
All Traps on Earth Symphonic Prog Sweden 2018
Anima Mundi Symphonic Prog Cuba 2002-2018

To be honest, I think the reason there are only two English bands in my list is simply because I've "discovered" most of them already.

Yes, Sweden has beaten England 5-2 in this line-up and Das Boot is on zee other foot for the Germans too with only one band (Sylvan) in the list, and having included a Russian band (the ironically named Little Tragedies), I couldn't forget my Ukraine Ways with Karfagen.

Swedes is the English name for the rutabaga root vegetable, England played like a bunch of root vegetables, hence turnips.

You must have read my mind. I was just about to mention Sanguine Hum, having added them to my playlists after you mentioned them recently. With a name like Sanguine Hum though, I had no idea they were British up until last week. I've also added Sanguine Hum to the list at the top of the page, along with Haken.

Actually, if talking about Prog in the last two decades, these are the albums I've so far found to be enough fond of:
Accordo dei Contrari (I)Kublai(CD, privat/ADC, 2011 I, a. 2011, 250) (2011)
Aesma Daeva (USA)The Eros of Frigid Beauty(CD, The Roots of all Evil, (2001)
Amarok (ESP)Sol De Medianoche(CD, Progrock 2007 US, a.2007, 150) (2007)
Ciccada (GR)A Child In The Mirror(CD, Fading 2010 I, a.2011, 150) (2010)
Dhafer Youssef (Tunesien)Electric Sufi (CD, Enja, 2001 D, a. 2002, 150) (2001)
But on almost all those I've got on CD (almost all), I skip even some tracks when I'm listening to them.

When looking closer at my list, it shows that of the modern Prog, the American is my fave so far, while even not
one Danish album has found place in my heart yet - but neither British or German, and only one Italian, so my
national Prog preferences have completely changed, for whatever reasons.

^ Thanks! There's so much great music around in the wonderful world of prog that I sometimes wonder how I'm going to find time to listen to it all - what with various PA playlists scattered all over the place - but it's a nice "problem" to have. I noticed some of those bands you listed are in the Space Rock genre, which is a genre I Love, so that seems like as good a place as any to start.

Agreed! Fortunately for me, I can pretty much tell whether I like the style, timbre, and ethos of a band with just a quick listen (e.g. a minute or two of samples across the entire album). According to Susan Roger's new book ( https://gizmodo.com/music-neuroscience-susan-rogers-book-1849801399" rel="nofollow - https://gizmodo.com/music-neuroscience-susan-rogers-book-1849801399 ), this is how it works...
When you listen to a novel record, your
brain will automatically and unconsciously scan this brand-new record
that you’re hearing. You’re assessing first and foremost, auditory scene
analysis. Am I hearing music? The next thing you do, and this happens
in a matter of milliseconds, is you scan the timbres. What’s the style
of music? Is this an electronic record? Is this an orchestral record? Is
it a Broadway record? Is it a jazz record? You scan the timbres and, in
a few hundred milliseconds, you know the style—the sources, shall we
say—of the instruments that are playing.
Then
you can independently process the words. For most of us, that’s in our
left hemisphere. You can move your spotlight of attention to the melody
and the harmonies. Very nice. You can move your spotlight of attention
up here to the somatosensory cortex and the motor cortex. You can ask
yourself, how’s that groove going? Where do I feel the beats in this
record? You can extract that rhythm from this record.
Simultaneously,
you’re assessing the style of the record, the genuineness of the
performances. And as you do all that, you’re looking for treats. You
just need to find one. And if that treat is powerful enough, your brain,
your auditory cortex will recognize, “Yep, that’s what I’m talking
about. That’s my kind of record.”
It’s
going to release some opiates initially and some dopamine from your
dopaminergic system. And that dopaminergic reward system is going to
swing back and tell the auditory cortex, “Yes, please. More of that.”
What happens is, over time, our auditory cortex is shaped to be better
and faster at recognizing our treats. Better and faster at recognizing
rhythms we love, melodies we love, the harmonies, the chord changes we
love. The lyrical ideas we love, the style we love, the sound. That’s
what happens when you listen to a novel record.

^ Thanks for another great list! I'll add those Polish bands to my Prague Archives blog, pronto, and hopefully, there won't be so many unpronounceable album titles this time around, but if there are, then I may need to polish up on my Polish.

^ In my original list at the top of page one, they're mainly newish bands with albums released between the years 2000 and 2021, all discovered during my recent series of year by year prog polls, with American bands having the strongest showing of all, and British bands having the smallest number in the list, mainly because I'd discovered most of them already, apart from Haken, The Pineapple Thief and Sanguine Hum (mentioned by you) which I've since added to my Prog Britannia playlists.

Thanks for the list. I've barely started with listening to Finnish bands (apart from Nightwish). I've added Hidria Spacefolk and Taipova Luotsuora to my Space Rock blog with Moonwagon sounding like a strong contender to be added there too.

Yes, Moonwagon can fit into psychedelic / space-rock category. I've got 3 albums of them.
