Two completely different records with the same name! But, if there's anything other than the name that they have in common, it's that they're both highly-regarded prog records of their respective eras. Classic 70s prog vs. 90s progressive death metal... who will win?

I love both albums, but I'm too moved by the themes of the VdGG one to not choose it.

Two awesome albums imho but Van der Graaf Generator - Still Life is the better one in this poll imho.

I don't know what to do here, a great classic prog album vs an essential progressive death metal album. Very apples and oranges. I can't choose really.

Of course, it does help if you're as narrow minded as I am...

Possibly my least favorite 70's VdGG-album up against peak-Opeth. Still the former Still Life over the latter for me.

VDGG for me! The lyrics are poetic and the delivery is very organic. I really enjoy the instrumentation on Opeth, especially the guitar work, but I am not a fan of that style of vocals. I recall my guitar teacher in the 1980s referring to it as Cookie Monster, and since then, I haven’t been able to get that image out my head. The guitar work is great, though. If the vocals were more like Dio or Bruce Dickinson, I’m sure I would like it a lot more. For some reason, the style of vocals on this VDGG album remind me of Todd Rundgren on the heavier Utopia stuff.

Not a fan of extreme vocals, so Opeth I guess...
No, for real, I prefer VdGGs one. Mostly for La Rossa.

I voted for the VdGG but really the gap between the two (30 to 4) shouldn't be that stark.

You had me very excited: I thought this poll might be about Perry Blake's amazing 1999 album of the same title!

The total knockout doesn't really suprise me , but be sure to have a look at my Voivod poll in the General Music Discussions.

That's what I was thinking. I understand that PA has more classic prog fans than extreme prog ones, but the albums' averages on the review site are incredibly close So I don't know, I guess I'm surprised and not surprised at the same time

call me crazy, voted for Opeth
That album its amazing, love that demonic grwols and clean vocals by Akerfeldt, the acoustic guitars parts played by Lindgren, and the tale of loss and loneliness is genuinely touchiung and engrossing.
